What You'll Do - Own high-visibility FinOps and data initiatives tied to the company's most strategic KPIs. - Drive company-wide cost performance with an Excellence in the Means mindset, ensuring disciplined execution, sustainable efficiency, and measurable impact. - Lead optimization programs across Databricks workloads, pipelines, clusters, and storage to unlock scalable efficiency. - Build executive-ready dashboards and narratives that translate cost and performance into business impact. - Monitor spend in real time, detect anomalies early, and orchestrate swift cross-team action. - Define and elevate FinOps governance, standards, and accountability across domains. - Partner with engineering and platform teams to shape cost-efficient architecture decisions from day one. - Drive showback/chargeback transparency and strengthen unit-economics visibility at domain level. - Influence budget planning and forecasting with data-driven insights and ROI-based prioritization. - Convert technical findings into clear recommendations for product, finance, and leadership stakeholders. - Collaborate with Data, Finance, Product, Cloud, and Ops to accelerate measurable business outcomes. What You'll Need - Degree in Engineering, CS, Economics, Stats, Math, or related fields. - Strong SQL skills for cost, usage, and performance analysis. - Python proficiency for analytics, automation, and data workflows. - Hands-on FinOps and cloud cost optimization experience. - Experience with Databricks and modern data platform environments. - Experience with BI tools. - Knowledge of Azure cost drivers (AWS/GCP is a plus). - Ability to prioritize initiatives by ROI and business impact. - Strong problem-solving and execution in fast-paced environments. - Advanced English for global written and verbal communication. Intermediate Backend Engineer, Analytics Instrumentation An overview of this role Analytics Instrumentation is part of the Data Engineering and Monetization (DE&M) group, focused on the collection of Product Usage, and Billing event data within GitLab. We build data collection platforms that enable product teams to assess user behavior and make evidence-based choices through privacy-conscious instrumentation that captures product usage throughout the user lifecycle. As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you'll contribute to the design and development of a unified, data infrastructure platform that consolidates analytics instrumentation across GitLab's engineering organization. You'll help build and maintain backend systems that give the company visibility into customer usage patterns across GitLab SaaS and Self-Managed deployment environments. That data directly informs strategic product priorities and strategies. This role offers the opportunity to work on foundational infrastructure that simplifies instrumentation for teams at GitLab, replacing the complexity of multiple language-specific software development kits with a single, unified solution that teams can rely on. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Build and maintain a unified data collection platform using Golang, Kubernetes, ClickHouse, and NATS, with success measured by reliability, performance, and adoption across GitLab teams. * Help improve the emission, transit, and quality of instrumentation data across the system, with success measured by data quality, data integrity, and usage billing accuracy. * Support usage billing and instrumentation systems during working hours, with success measured by timely incident handling and reliable service restoration. * Work across the organization with research and development teams and the enterprise data organization to deliver common solutions, with success measured by adoption across multiple stakeholders. * Contribute to technical choices that balance ease of use for product teams with reliability and correctness for data consumers, with success measured by platform usability and trusted downstream data. WHAT YOU’LL BRING * Experience working with platform or infrastructure systems in production environments. * Proficiency in the Go programming language, with experience building and maintaining production services. * Backend development experience, with the ability to contribute to scalable, reliable systems serving internal and external customers. * Familiarity with infrastructure concerns such as system reliability, performance at scale, data quality, and observability. * Experience working in cross-functional teams with product teams, data consumers, and other internal stakeholders across team boundaries. * Familiarity with cloud native technologies and open source development practices.
