We’re looking for a Principal Product Manager to drive the vision, strategy, and execution of our configuration and change management experience across the Toast platform. You’ll work closely with engineering, design, and go-to-market teams to craft an experience that supports our customers and the needs of their business. A day in the life (Responsibilities) * Own and evolve the product strategy for Toast’s configuration platform, with a focus on: * Designing systems that safely manage changes to critical business data, including validation, versioning, auditability, and rollback at scale * Building and evolving a configuration platform that works for SMB, multi-unit operator, and Enterprise use cases across the Toast experience * Exploring and integrating automation and AI-assisted (‘agentic’) workflows into configuration and publishing experiences * Build platform capabilities that enable other Toast teams to develop, test, and deploy configuration-driven features independently * Build and maintain a roadmap in alignment with business OKRs, customer needs, and technical feasibility * Drive feature development from ideation through launch—writing clear specs, collaborating with engineering and design, and measuring success * Partner with customer-facing teams and other development teams to gather insights and evangelize product value * In partnership with engineering and design counterparts, lead a development team by providing clear direction, setting priorities, and fostering a culture of customer-centricity, innovation, and accountability * Embrace and advocate for the use of AI tools to accelerate product discovery, streamline execution, and explore new product experiences - helping shape how we build and what we build. WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT * 8+ years of backend development experience. * Strong commercial experience with PHP and Symfony. * Previous experience as Software Architect, System Architect, Solution Architect, Principal Engineer, or Lead Backend Engineer with significant architecture ownership. * FinTech, Payments, Banking, EMI, PSP, or Open Banking experience. * Deep understanding of OOP, SOLID, GRASP, and design patterns. * Strong experience designing high-load and distributed systems. * Strong understanding of Domain-Driven Design (DDD). * Experience with Event-Driven Architecture, CQRS, and Event Sourcing. * Experience designing microservice architectures and service communication patterns. * Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, performance optimization, and database design. * Experience with Redis, message brokers, caching strategies, and asynchronous processing. * Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud-native environments. * Understanding of system observability, monitoring, logging, and performance analysis. * Experience documenting and presenting architectural decisions. * Ability to balance business goals with technical excellence. Toast IQ is our agentic platform for restaurant operators: a growing set of specialized AI agents that take real work off an operator's plate — driving demand, managing labor, and optimizing the back office. We're launching new agents continuously across multiple lines of business, and the complexity of doing that well, with coherent packaging, consistent quality, and a single platform story, is growing faster than the surface area of the product itself. This role owns the program that makes it work. You'll design and run the monthly release engine end to end, set and hold the bar on platform readiness, and coordinate go-to-market so naming, packaging, and messaging land as a coherent platform story rather than a dozen separate launches that confuse operators and the field. The goal is to build repeatable operating mechanisms that let Toast move quickly and confidently and that scale as Toast IQ scales. You'll work across product, engineering, marketing, support, and finance. You won't have direct authority over most of the people you depend on, which means you'll earn influence, make decisions that stick, and serve as an escalation point when things go sideways. A day in the life (Responsibilities) * Design, own, and continuously improve the monthly agent release program — one cadence, one launch process — across all lines of business. Build this as a durable operating mechanism, not a series of one-off coordination efforts. * Set and hold the platform-readiness bar. Engage credibly with engineering teams on architecture, dependencies, and technical risk. Own the dependency and risk map. Be willing to call a postponement when a product isn't ready — and make that call stick. * Drive go-to-market coherence across LOBs so naming, packaging, and messaging land as one platform story. Work with PMM and GTM to make sure the field can sell and operators understand what they're getting. * Instrument launch health and build reporting that matters: what shipped, what slipped, adoption signals, and the blockers that need to be resolved upstream. Feed this signal back to R&D leadership in a form they can act on. * Operate with high judgment in ambiguous situations. When the governance model doesn't cover a case, make a defensible call and move.
