Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together. We're building one place where your knowledge,
projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals,
small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion.
Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last,
and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of
Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to
making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their
life’s work.
Notion's Search & Context Platform is the substrate that powers how 100M+ users and, increasingly, Notion's agents find and reason
over the right information. This team owns the search infrastructure and indexing systems powering lexical and semantic retrieval,
the platform primitives for managing agent context and memories, and the scalability, performance, security, and enterprise
capabilities that make all of it production-grade.
Data growth is faster than ever, and the systems that power this need to rapidly evolve to support an order of magnitude
growth—both in the volume of content we index and in the load that agents now place on the retrieval layer.
As the Engineering Manager for this team, you'll lead a technically deep group of engineers building platform systems used by
multiple product teams. Your most important customers are the Search & Context product team and the AI team (building agents on
top of these primitives). You'll set the technical direction, product manage the platform scope on behalf of those customers, and
make hard tradeoffs to move fast in service of product velocity — while keeping the platform sustainable, reliable, and secure.

WHO WE ARE Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion. Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last, and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their life’s work. ABOUT THE ROLE We’re hiring an Engineering Manager to lead Context: the team responsible for the systems and product primitives that give notion’s users and notion agents access to all the relevant context for the task at hand. This includes classic search ranking algorithms and surfaces, but also agentic trajectories with carefully crafted tool calls. You’ll lead a team that focuses on two types of work: reliability of the current context systems and unlocking new contextual capabilities. * We must have a production-grade search product (stability, extensibility, latency, cost). We must ensure search—still a core navigational endpoint—can reliably serve our 100M+ customers. * At the same time, the “agent layer” (how agents interact with search) now accounts for the majority of AI-enabled search traffic (50%+), and is where we expect the fastest iteration and biggest user-facing gains. WHAT YOU'LL ACHIEVE * Build and lead a high-performing team responsible for context, memories, and ranking that power agent workflows across Notion. * Drive a roadmap that improves the end-to-end reliability of agents acquiring context across Notion + connectors. * Raise the bar on context quality through evaluation + experimentation, and ship improvements that move core user metrics. * Balance foundational platform work (latency, cost, stability) with rapid iteration on new agentic capabilities. * Partner deeply across AI, product, infra, and partner ecosystems to unblock delivery and set clear ownership boundaries. WHAT YOU’LL OWN * Direction and execution for Context as both a product and a platform. * Agentic retrieval approaches that treat “finding” as a sequence of actions (tool use, query generation, iterative retrieval), not a single ranked list. * A durable measurement loop: evaluation frameworks, instrumentation, and experimentation practices to improve functional correctness and user-perceived usefulness. * Team health and talent: hiring, coaching, feedback, growth, and performance management. SKILLS YOU'LL NEED TO BRING * Experience leading engineering teams working on search/retrieval/relevance, AI product, or adjacent platform problems. * Experience building agentic or tool-using systems * Strong product + systems judgment in ambiguous environments; can make crisp tradeoffs and keep execution moving. * Comfort owning a roadmap that requires heavy cross-team coordination and stakeholder alignment. * Sufficient technical depth in modern retrieval (lexical + semantic, embeddings, reranking) and where LLMs fit (query generation, tool orchestration, evidence selection). * Track record building collaborative, supportive, and high-expectation team cultures. * High tolerance for ambiguity and change; enjoys learning quickly and adapting plans. BONUS POINTS * Experience with multi-source retrieval and permissioned enterprise data. * Experience establishing eval frameworks for AI/agent outcomes. * Experience with classic information retrieval metrics and machine learning techniques. * Has led teams through rapid scope changes and evolving org boundaries. Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way. The Community You Will Join: The Relevance & Personalization (R&P) team is Airbnb's matching intelligence engine — a talented team of ML engineers, applied researchers, and technical program managers who connect guests to the right listings across every surface and help hosts compete and thrive in our marketplace. We work at the intersection of search ranking, recommendations, personalization, and generative AI, and we're building toward a future where Airbnb feels less like a search engine and more like a knowledgeable travel companion that understands your needs across your entire trip journey. The Difference You Will Make: As Product Manager for Relevance & Personalization, you will help set the strategy and drive execution for some of Airbnb's highest-leverage AI systems. You'll own the roadmap and shape how personalization works across the guest journey, and help define how we close the feedback loop for hosts. You'll partner with engineers, researchers, designers, and cross-functional teams to ship systems that directly drive bookings, guest satisfaction, and host success — at global scale. A Typical Day: * Define and drive the roadmap for Airbnb's relevance and personalization platform — from natural language query understanding to multi-turn, context-aware discovery experiences * Make prioritization calls that balance multiple competing objectives: guest experience, host success, revenue, fairness, and marketplace health * Partner with ML engineers and applied researchers to shape model strategy, evaluation frameworks, and experimentation design * Align cross-functional partners — Guest, Host, MarTech, Trust & Safety, Customer Support — on shared goals and sequencing * Drive the Tripcycle vision: ensuring R&P's intelligence layer connects across the full trip lifecycle, from inspiration through post-trip * Design and oversee A/B experiments with rigorous metric design and long-term effect measurement * Translate complex technical tradeoffs into clear decisions for engineering teams and concise narratives for leadership * Foster an environment where engineers and product managers collaborate on building the future * Stay close to guests and hosts: synthesize user research, marketplace data, and competitive signals to sharpen your intuition and refine strategy Your Expertise: * 10+ years of product management experience, with at least 3 years on ML, search, recommendations, or AI-powered products at scale * Track record of owning strategy and roadmap for technically complex systems — not just managing features, but setting direction and making hard prioritization calls * Strong experimentation fluency: comfortable designing A/B tests, interpreting counterfactual results, and reasoning about proxy metrics vs. long-term outcomes * Experience working on two-sided marketplaces or platforms where you balanced supply-side and demand-side tradeoffs * Ability to earn the respect of Staff and Principal-level engineers and researchers — you don't need to write code, but you need to engage at a level that builds credibility * Clear, structured communicator who can distill complex technical tradeoffs for executives and translate strategic intent into actionable guidance for engineers * Experience with LLM-based products in production — ideally involving evaluation challenges, latency constraints, or safety and guardrail work (preferred) * Familiarity with reinforcement learning, contextual bandits, or explore/exploit frameworks in a product context (preferred) * Background working alongside applied researchers or with teams that publish externally (preferred) Your Location: Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant will need to be based in San Francisco, CA to be able to conduct their work. Currently, employees can not be located in: Alaska, Indiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Delaware And Rhode Island. This list is continuously being updated, please check back with us if the state you live in is on the exclusion list.
