Postdoctoral studies in Experimental Systems Neuroscience - Stagkourakis Lab (scholarship) Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research? The Stagkourakis Lab is recruiting for a highly independent postdoctoral researcher that can integrate within our existing team pursuing systems neuroscience projects. The lab is based at SciLifeLab (Sweden’s national center for advanced life science infrastructure) and the Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute. Our research focuses on the neural control of survival and homeostatic behaviors (including aggression, fear, and feeding), using large-scale neural recordings, advanced imaging, causal perturbations, and quantitative analysis in freely moving mice. Applicants must have demonstrated, hands-on experience in at least one of the following core domains, and strong familiarity with the others: - Stereotaxic surgery in mice, including viral injections and/or implantations. - Large-scale electrophysiology, preferably Neuropixels or high-channel silicon probes, in vivo. - In vivo imaging, including miniscope and/or two-photon microscopy. - RNA sequencing or spatial transcriptomics. Candidates without substantial practical experience in stereotaxic surgery combined with neural recording or imaging will not be competitive for this position. Duties Research in our lab integrates a variety of approaches, making us open to individuals from diverse backgrounds. A foundation in quantitative fields (e.g., mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics) or prior experience in experimental techniques (e.g., molecular biology, high-channel density silicon probe electrophysiology in vivo or in vitro, advanced animal behavior designs and analysis, miniscope or two-photon imaging) is advantageous. Candidates are expected to demonstrate previous productivity, often by publications, but not exclusively. A combination of at least some of the following skills is essential: - A high degree of independence - Ability to construct/maintain and use complex experimental setups - Proficiency in “big” data analysis (using MATLAB or Python), or Candidates with demonstrated expertise in at least one, but ideally more, of the following domains are invited to apply: - Design of novel, custom behavioral paradigms in mice. - Use of hardware and (custom) software to interface and synchronize behavioral and neural recording setups. - Familiarity with Arduino, Bonsai, DataJoint, and/or neural data recording platforms. - Assembly, maintenance and use of complex electrophysiology or imaging systems. - Combination of behavior with large-scale neural recordings using silicon probes, miniscope, or 2P imaging. - Ability to explore and analyze large datasets using modern machine learning methods and a data-centered approach. - Previous participation in collaborative projects with computational or experimental researchers. - scRNA sequencing. - Expertise in non-traditional animal models. Entry requirements Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. A foreign researcher is a person living in another country who comes to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. About the position The Department of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Applied Ecology, Agricultural Sciences, and Biotechnology (ALB) at the University of Inland Norway (INN) invites applications from exceptional candidates for a PhD position. The position is expected to start as soon as possible and will last for three years. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Biotechnology. The candidate will be enrolled in INNs PhD program in applied ecology and biotechnology, and the candidate must work from the designated workplace in Hamar. The appointed PhD candidate will work in the group of Professor Rafi Ahmad. The Ahmad group (https://www.inn.no/english/find-an-employee/rafi-ahmad.html) is also part of the Norwegian Network for One Health Resistome Surveillance (NORSE), a national network of 13 Norwegian institutions. The group is also part of Microbiology Matters (MiMa), a PhD school with work-life relevance that focuses on One Health and infectious diseases (https://en.uit.no/project/mima). About the project The WHO considers bacterial infection caused by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) a critical global threat to modern healthcare and societal well-being. It has been nearly 40 years since a new class of antibiotics was introduced to the market. This, along with the increased and often inappropriate use of existing drugs, means we are heading toward a world where antibiotics may no longer be effective. Remarkably, most prescriptions and antibiotic administration are still done without any information on the causative pathogens or their resistance profiles. The selected candidate will work within the UTI-Diag and OH-AMR-Diag projects funded by the Research Council of Norway. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered. Applicants who have submitted their master's thesis for evaluation before the deadline are eligible to apply, but final documentation must be obtained before employment is offered. To be admitted to the doctoral program, the applicant must normally have a minimum master's degree or master's level (120 credits, §3 master's in the Norwegian system) or equivalent education, within in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or another relevant scientific discipline. Furthermore, you must have a strong academic background from your previous studies, i.e., the average grade should normally be B or better from the master's program (120 credits) or equivalent education. Calculation of the average grade is based on the credits for each course and for the master's thesis. Applicants with weaker grades than what is normally required for admission must document that they will be able to complete a doctoral degree. In cases where the education has been approved with the use of the grades passed / failed, the applicant is admitted after an individual assessment. Required qualifications The required qualifications are: • Prior experience with methods development, including nucleic acid extraction or host cell/DNA depletion. • Hands-on experience with sequencing technologies from Oxford Nanopore, including MinION flow cells. • Prior experience with the entire sequencing workflow, from sample preparation to bioinformatics analysis. • Hands-on experience handling clinical samples. • Skilled in analyzing large-scale biological datasets, including whole-genome sequencing and metagenomic sequencing. Desired Qualifications • Fluency in scripting in Python and R. • Experience with AMR and infection biology. The candidate must also demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written English. The position A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Health Sciences, with the research group for Host-Microbe Interactions. The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will have the opportunity to advance your scientific career and further qualify for academic positions. The project/position's field of research The postdoctoral fellow will be part of an emerging project area headed by Prof. Christian Lentz. Combining chemical biology, molecular biology, bacterial physiology and infection biology methods, our research is dedicated to unravel how bacterial pathogens functionally adapt to their host and antibiotics and to translate these insights to develop innovative approaches to prevent, treat and diagnose bacterial infections. In particular, we are interested in understanding: i) how single cells shape the collective function of bacterial pathogen cell populations during colonization and infection, ii) how previously undercharacterized hydrolytic enzymes and dynamic changes in chemical modifications of the biomolecular landscape of bacterial cells contribute to bacterial physiology, pathogenesis and drug susceptibility, iii) understanding and modelling pathogenesis and treatment failure of difficult-to-treat clinical infections. The main model organisms used in our team are Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. We seek a highly motivated, research-minded candidate, with a strong academic track-record and complementary research interests and expertise. The project will be tailored to the successful candidate, and the postdoctoral fellow is encouraged to develop their own research ideas and strategies within the framework of the project.
