The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on the project Adapting to climate risks via landscape-scale solutions: effects of peatland restoration on floods and water browning (ANTIPASTI).  The project clarifies how peatland restoration modifies the way landscapes retain, transform and release water and biogeochemical elements, eventually affecting their capability of modulating floods and aquatic carbon fluxes. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway and realized in partnership with the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA, Norway).  As a Postdoctoral Fellow you will join an interdisciplinary, international and stimulating academic environment, with supporting colleagues for you to excel in your academic career. The Postdoctoral Fellow position may entail a secondary affiliation and recurrent research visits at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento (Italy). We are looking for a capable and motivated candidate with an interest in investigating the effects of peatland restoration on hydrology and catchment biogeochemistry by means of a diverse set of methods, including field investigations, modelling and data-driven analyses.  Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department. Across Europe, governments, industries and public institutions increasingly rely on scenarios, models, indicators, roadmaps and assessments to guide decisions about energy systems, infrastructure, industry, digital technologies and climate policy. The project starts from the observation that such tools do not simply describe possible futures. They actively participate in shaping what is considered realistic, desirable and achievable. FEASIBILITY therefore studies how knowledge, values and governance arrangements influence which transition pathways gain credibility and political traction, and which are marginalized or dismissed.  Bringing together perspectives from Science and Technology Studies, sustainability transitions research, political science, geography and techno-economic analysis, FEASIBILITY includes comparative empirical studies across several European countries (Norway, Germany, Portugal, and the United Kingdom). The two positions available are:  PhD Project 1: The epistemic politics of Twin Transitions​ How do societies decide which futures are possible, desirable, and achievable? This PhD project explores the role of knowledge, expertise, and future-oriented analysis in shaping societal responses to climate change and digitalization. Governments, industries, and public institutions increasingly rely on scenarios, models, forecasts, roadmaps, and other forms of anticipatory knowledge when making decisions about energy systems, infrastructure, industrial development, and technological change. The successful candidate will investigate how such forms of knowledge influence political and societal decision-making, and how ideas about feasible futures are produced, negotiated, and contested. The project may engage with topics such as modelling, foresight, scenarios, expertise, policy advice, innovation, or governance in the context of the twin transitions.   PhD Project 2: Valuation and Decision-Making in Twin Transitions​ How do societies decide what matters in processes of transformation? This PhD project explores how values become embedded in governance, policy, and decision-making in the context of climate and digital transitions. As societies seek to balance concerns such as competitiveness, sustainability, biodiversity, justice, security, and economic development, different actors promote different ways of evaluating progress and success. The successful candidate will investigate how values are translated into indicators, metrics, assessments, policy frameworks, and governance practices, and how these shape societal priorities and transition pathways. The project may engage with topics such as sustainability metrics, biodiversity, justice, industrial policy, energy transitions, or emerging approaches to evaluating societal change. Duties of the position​ As a PhD research fellow, you will complete doctoral education leading to a PhD degree. About the project​ The Gjærevoll Centre for Foresight Analysis of Biodiversity is looking for an ambitious ecologist with excellent skills in biodiversity informatics and modelling. The position is funded by the TRACE – Transport Research Centre for Nature, Environment and Land Use project, funded by the Research council of Norway and the Ministry of transport through the Transport 2050 program. The position is within the research area "nature and biodiversity impacts of the transport sector" within the TRACE centre and will be part of a larger interdisciplinary group of recruitment positions at the Gjærevoll Centre for Biodiversity Foresight Analysis and the new Centre for Biodiversity Forecasting (both at NTNU) working to better understand biodiversity and how this is impacted by natural and anthropogenic drivers. The successful candidate will work with spatial scales of biodiversity patterns in terrestrial ecosystems, using theoretical models and empirical analyses to assess robustness and sensitivity of ecosystems to environmental change. The main aim is to improve our understanding of spatial scales of anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity. The empirical work will include collection and analyses of new data, as well as previously collected data and information from public biodiversity databases. A main aim will be to develop indicators and metrices of anthropogenic impacts on the environment, which can be implemented in planning tools for minimizing nature and biodiversity losses while developing the transport system according to the principles of Avoid, Shift and Improve. The candidate will conduct the work in collaboration with a highly interdisciplinary team within the TRACE centre and the Gjærevoll centre. Stakeholder engagement and communication with user groups, both in other fields of research, private and public enterprises as well as the society at large is expected. (deleted if not applicable) Salary and conditions​ As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The position is conditional on external funding.
