About the job
As our new Senior Production Biologist, your main purpose is to provide high quality care of our yellowtail kingfish by providing the best possible circumstances within our RAS facility in Kats, Zeeland. You will be involved in system optimization and maintenance and specifically focus on quality control and assurance related to fish welfare.

Your tasks will be
Naturally, you’ll make sure that all of this is done in a healthy and safe manner for both our animals and people within all the different departments within the organization.
You’ll be working in both day shifts, night shifts and weekend shifts together with other colleagues from the production team. Your regular workday start at 7.00 AM.

ABOUT THE ROLE This is a hands-on research role in our biology and production team. You'll work on the science that underpins everything Adaptyv does: developing and optimizing protein expression systems, running molecular biology workflows, and pushing the boundaries of what we can produce and characterize at scale. We express proteins at high volume across cell-free and cell-based systems, run DNA synthesis and assembly at high throughput, and characterize binding, stability, and function using BLI, SPR, and enzymatic assays. WHAT YOU'LL DO * Develop and optimize protein expression workflows - cell-free expression (PURE, lysate-based), E. coli, and potentially mammalian systems. Troubleshoot when proteins don't express, misfold, or aggregate. * Design and execute DNA synthesis and assembly protocols: PCR, Golden Gate, Gibson. Improve yield, fidelity, and throughput. * Develop new assays or adapt existing ones for the platform - thermostability, developability, enzyme activity, or whatever the next customer need demands. * Run experiments yourself. This is not a project management role. You'll be at the bench doing molecular biology, analyzing data, and iterating on protocols. * Work with the automation team to translate your methods into automated workflows. You develop the protocol that works; they make the robots run it. * Analyze experimental data, identify failure modes, and improve methods systematically. When 20% of constructs in a batch fail to express, you figure out why. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR * MSc or PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related field. Hands-on depth matters most - years at the bench doing real molecular biology counts more than the degree title. * Practical protein expression and purification skills. You've expressed recombinant proteins and know what it takes to get them soluble, folded, and functional. * Experience with DNA synthesis, cloning, or assembly methods (PCR, Golden Gate, Gibson). High-throughput experience is a plus. * Comfortable with data analysis - you interpret chromatograms, binding curves, and expression gels without hand-holding. * Rigorous experimentalist. You keep detailed notes, design proper controls, and understand why reproducibility matters when you're running hundreds of experiments a month. * Interested in automation. You don't need to program robots, but you should want your protocols to become automated workflows rather than staying manual forever. * Independent and resourceful. You troubleshoot using literature, first principles, and experimentation - not by waiting for someone to tell you what to try next. Location: Lausanne, Switzerland (on-site - this is a lab role). The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. About the role: The Scientific Support Division at ESS is looking for a Biodeuteration Scientist to support the ESS neutron user program. The Deuteration group at ESS operates a support service providing deuterium-labelled samples for the scientific users of the ESS neutron instruments for carrying out a broad range of experiments primarily in materials and life science research. In this position, you will play an important role in ensuring the success of biological and biomaterial experiments at ESS by further developing methods for the biological production of a range of deuterated biomolecules, contributing deuterated materials for user proposals and requested by ESS users, and optimising purification and analysis capabilities. In the ESS Deuteration group, we also work in close collaboration with our international colleques at other deuteration laboratories. In this role, you will: Provide deuteration services for neutron experiment users, including the production, purification and characterization of a variety of biologically deuterated molecules. Further develop ESS capabilities for biodeuteration as well as related purification and analysis methods, in order to meet the evolving needs of the ESS scientific user program. Coordinate the planning, organization and operation of ESS biodeuteration support including proposal calls, feasibility reviews and proposal work scheduling. Maintain and operate the biological deuteration facilities of ESS in collaboration with the Lund Protein Production Facility at Lund University hosting our biodeuteration activities. Supervise and provide technical guidance to visitors and hosted students and postdocs working on biodeuteration projects. Participate in external and internal collaborations to enhance ESS biodeuteration capabilities and scientific output of the user programme. Disseminate results and method developments through publications in peer-reviewed journals and at relevant scientific meetings as appropriate. Collaborate with Deuteration laboratories at other large-scale research infrastructure to to ensure continuing development of Deuteration services ESS. This is a full-time permanent position based at the brand new https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5h4bIEfM5Q About you: We're seeking an experienced and highly motivated biochemist/biologist with a PhD in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or biotechnology and a strong track record of the expression of biological molecules in microbial cell cultures for research. You have experience of bacterial and yeast expression systems and biochemical modifications and purification methodologies. In addition to designing biological production processes and optimising purification methods, you also bring deep expertise and understanding of modern cell culturing and analytical techniques - including automated fermentation systems, purification technologies and biophysical characterisation methods. Experience in protein ligation-mediated polypeptide engineering, and/or genetic engineering of microbial expression systems is an advantage. You take pride in delivering reliable results on time, and you thrive in both independent and collaborative settings. Comfortable working with colleagues and neutron users from many disciplines, you have a service-minded proactive approach and an eagerness to contribute to a fast-paced, international research environment. Communicating clearly in English - both written and spoken - comes naturally to you, and you're confident engaging with colleagues from a wide range of technical backgrounds and presenting your work at conferences. If you’ve worked with biological deuteration previously, that’s a strong advantage. So is experience operating automated bioreactor systems, experience with higher eukaryotic cell culturing, biomolecule production and purification at mg-g scale, or supporting user-driven custom projects in research, infrastructure or contract environments. ABOUT THE ROLE This is an internship for an exceptional molecular biologist who wants to do the most serious work of their life so far. You won't shadow people or run busywork — you'll own real production workflows: cloning, protein expression, purification, and characterization, on the systems that serve our customers every day. We run a high-throughput, heavily automated lab, and we hold interns to the same bar as the rest of the team. We'll give you hard problems and a senior person to learn from, and expect you to make a real dent. For us, an internship is also the best way to find people we want to keep — do great work, and we'll want to bring you on full-time afterwards. WHAT YOU'LL DO * Run molecular cloning and protein production end to end: PCR, assembly, transformation, expression (bacterial and/or mammalian), and purification. * Execute and improve QC on constructs and proteins (capillary electrophoresis, sequencing, SDS-PAGE) and characterization assays (binding, expression, stability). * Take a workflow that's flaky or slow and make it reliable and faster — better protocols, better automation, fewer failures. * Work hands-on with liquid handlers and lab automation, and help push manual protocols toward automated ones. * Bring rigor to your data: document precisely, track samples, and make your results reproducible and traceable. * Diagnose failures across biology, reagents, and instruments — and fix them, not just flag them. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR * Strong hands already. You've done real molecular biology — PCR, cloning, transformation, electrophoresis, ideally protein expression and purification — through research, a project, or a prior internship, and you're good at it. Protocols don't intimidate you. * Studying or recently graduated in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Life Science Engineering, or a related field. * Automation- and software-curious. You'd rather automate a tedious step than repeat it 200 times. Comfort with scripting (Python) or liquid-handling automation is a strong plus. * Self-starter. You see what needs doing and do it, without waiting for someone to hand you the next step. * AI-native. It's 2026 — you use AI tools as a default to learn faster and work smarter. * High standards and high drive. You care that the experiment is right, you move fast, and you're excited that the robots run real customer experiments.
