We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. About the role: The Scientific Support Division at ESS is looking for a Biodeuteration Scientist to support the ESS neutron user program. The Deuteration group at ESS operates a support service providing deuterium-labelled samples for the scientific users of the ESS neutron instruments for carrying out a broad range of experiments primarily in materials and life science research. In this position, you will play an important role in ensuring the success of biological and biomaterial experiments at ESS by further developing methods for the biological production of a range of deuterated biomolecules, contributing deuterated materials for user proposals and requested by ESS users, and optimising purification and analysis capabilities. In the ESS Deuteration group, we also work in close collaboration with our international colleques at other deuteration laboratories. In this role, you will: Provide deuteration services for neutron experiment users, including the production, purification and characterization of a variety of biologically deuterated molecules. Further develop ESS capabilities for biodeuteration as well as related purification and analysis methods, in order to meet the evolving needs of the ESS scientific user program. Coordinate the planning, organization and operation of ESS biodeuteration support including proposal calls, feasibility reviews and proposal work scheduling. Maintain and operate the biological deuteration facilities of ESS in collaboration with the Lund Protein Production Facility at Lund University hosting our biodeuteration activities. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for an instrument scientist for the dedicated Test beamline (TBL). The Diffraction and Imaging Division is home to the instrument scientists and instrument operational engineers responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the DREAM, MAGiC, BEER, HEIMDAL, ODIN, and TBL instruments at ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are being implemented to fully leverage the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The primary purpose of TBL is characterizing the target-reflector-moderator system and verifying the performance of the neutron source based on operating parameters such as proton beam energy, stability, pulse length, and beam rastering, as well as the moderator conditions. An important aspect of this work will be comparing the measured and simulated neutronic performance of the moderator, providing a crucial reference for various neutron scattering instruments. Additionally, the TBL will contribute to optimizing instruments and methods to fully exploit the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The TBL will function as a local characterization station, supporting technical developments in areas such as neutron optics, polarization, and novel detectors. It is designed to support the user program by performing exploratory imaging experiments, neutron diffraction studies, and single-crystal alignment. Due to the flexibility of the instrument, a variety of detectors and sample environments can be fitted inside the experimental cave, allowing multipurpose measurements on not only thermal neutrons but also epithermal/fast neutrons and gamma rays. About the role Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions. The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. Chemical Physics is a dynamic and international environment that strives for scientific excellence through teamwork and combined theoretical and experimental efforts. The theoretical activities at Chemical Physics focus on electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory together with mean-field modeling and Monte-Carlo simulations for reaction kinetics. By linking quantum mechanical calculations with kinetic modeling, it is possible to bridge both length and time scales. About the research project Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) convert the chemical energy in hydrogen to electrical energy. The main parts of a PEMFC are the anode, cathode and electrolyte. The reactions at the anode and cathode electrodes are catalyzed by metal nanoparticles on carbon. A current issue for large scale implementation of the PEMFC technology is long-term stability. The project will use atomistic first principles methods to understand the governing mechanism for fuel cell degradation. Increased understanding of the governing processes will provide information on how catalysts could be improved and how the system should be operated to minimize degradation. The project is a collaboration between Volvo Technology AB and Chemical Physics at Chalmers. Department of Molecular Sciences Third-cycle subject area: Chemistry Description of the doctoral project Do you want to work in a project that aims to replace fossil sources with forest raw materials for the production of biomaterials? Are you interested in immersing yourself in molecular interactions at the atomic level with advanced analytical instruments? Do you want to work with a whole group of researchers who share these interests? If so, this could be a PhD position for you. The overall goal of this PhD project is to enzymatically modify glycans from hemicellulose to produce bio-based crosslinkers for applications in adhesives, hydrogels and other crosslinked materials. However, many materials that we consider bio-based, such as wood fibreboards, hydrogels and stabilizers from non-fossil polymers, still rely on crosslinkers that have fossil origins and are often very harmful chemicals. Fibreboards for furniture, construction and insulation typically contain around 9% glue consisting of urea formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen and its emissions from fibreboards are a major concern. Oxidative enzymes will be used on hemicellulose substrates, such as xyloglucan and glucomannan, to obtain aldehyde and ketone functions on the sugar ring in parallel with a partial degradation to oligosaccharides. The expected result is a collection of non-toxic, bio-based crosslinkers that can potentially replace formaldehyde and similar fossil-based crosslinkers. About the position You will be part of a research group conducting research in organic chemistry and biotechnology with a focus on structural analysis of enzymes and carbohydrate substrates using NMR spectroscopy, as well as the development of new methods for studying interactions between proteins and carbohydrates using NMR spectroscopy. The project includes a lot of laboratory work and will be carried out with an advanced level of characterization using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to be able to draw conclusions about the structural composition of the crosslinkers and the crosslinked materials. To achieve these goals while ensuring a productive and enriching environment, the project includes supervision in organic chemistry, enzymology and wood technology. The position also includes teaching up to 20% of the time.
