You will combine machine learning, modelling and simulation to better understand, predict and strengthen these systems under uncertainty and disturbance – working at the intersection of AI, digital twins and the built environment. About us At RISE, the unit Connected Intelligence conducts applied research and development at the meeting point between artificial intelligence, connected systems and the physical world. We build intelligent, data-driven solutions that turn sensor data, models and real-time information into decisions – for industry, public agencies and society. Our team is interdisciplinary and hands-on. We are a group of researchers who develop practical, trustworthy AI solutions together with industry partners, public agencies and academia. About the role In this position you will pursue doctoral research on AI and digital twins for resilient energy systems, with a focus on district heating and cooling networks and building energy systems. The overall direction is set, while the specific scientific contributions will be shaped together with you. You will: Develop AI and machine-learning methods for modelling, monitoring and forecasting in district heating and cooling networks and building energy systems Build and validate digital twins that mirror the behaviour of these energy systems and their assets in real time Investigate how data-driven methods can improve the resilience and efficiency of district heating/cooling and building energy systems against faults, disturbances and changing conditions Combine physics-based models with data-driven approaches (e.g. hybrid and physics-informed machine learning) Validate methods on real data and in relevant testbed or simulation environments together with energy utilities, property owners and research partners Publish your results in leading international conferences and journals, and present them in research and industry forums Contribute to research and innovation projects within the unit The position is a full-time, time-limited doctoral employment, normally up to five years including approximately 20% departmental work, leading to a PhD. Project description Stormwater transports a wide range of pollutants from urban environments to receiving waters, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters and coastal ecosystems. Urban drainage infrastructures, such as gully pots and stormwater ponds, play a critical role by retaining sediments and associated contaminants. However, their performance depends on effective operation and maintenance (O&M), which in practice is often reactive or based on fixed schedules, despite large spatial and temporal variability in sediment accumulation. This PhD project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to enable a transition towards more data-driven and environmentally responsible maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures. The research work will focus on developing a data-driven understanding of sediment accumulation processes in urban drainage infrastructures. This includes long-term monitoring using high-resolution sensors to capture sediment dynamics across rainfall events and seasons. Based on these data, predictive models will be developed to estimate sediment accumulation and infra-structure’s remaining functionality. The results will support more effective maintenance strategies by identifying when and where maintenances are needed to maximise environmental performance and operational efficiency. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoctoral researcher you independently plan and carry out your research work. Subject description Robotics and artificial intelligence aim to develop novel robotic systems that are characterised by advanced autonomy for improving the ability of robots to interact with the surrounding environment and humans during the execution of specific tasks. Project description The vision of RAI is aiming in closing the gap from theory to real life, while the team has a strong expertise in field robotics.
