Summer & Seasonal Jobs Guide: Timing, Rules, and Last-Minute Openings

Summer is fast approaching, and for many—especially students and young people—it's time to enter the job market. A summer job is not only an excellent way to earn extra money, it's also a valuable asset for your CV and a foot in the door to your future career.
But how does it actually work? When should you apply, what are your rights, and is it too late to find something now if you weren't searching back in January? Here is our complete guide to summer and seasonal jobs in Sweden.
When are Summer Jobs Posted?
Traditionally, summer job recruitment follows a clear timeline:
- The First Wave (January–March): Most large employers, municipalities, and state-owned companies publish their summer roles early in the year. This is when the majority of positions are filled.
- The Second Chance (April–May): Smaller companies, restaurants, cafes, and campsites often advertise slightly later when they have a better estimate of the season's bookings.
- Last-Minute Openings (June–July): There is a constant influx of last-minute roles. These are usually vacation cover positions for regular staff, sudden workload peaks, or positions where candidates backed out.
Even though most formal application windows close by June, hundreds of new summer and seasonal jobs are still published every week. It is definitely not too late to find a job!
5 Things to Check Before Signing Your Contract
When you're offered a summer job, it's easy to get excited and sign immediately. However, to avoid unpleasant surprises, you should always check the following:
1. Written Employment Contract
Never start working without a written contract. This is your legal protection if any disagreements arise regarding pay or hours. The contract must state:
- Your and the employer's contact details.
- Your duties and job title.
- The type of employment (e.g., temporary/seasonal employment).
- Working hours and salary.
- Start and end dates.
2. Collective Agreements (Kollektivavtal) – Your Security Guarantee
A collective agreement is a contract negotiated between trade unions (such as Unionen or LO) and employers. If your employer has a collective agreement, you are guaranteed:
- A fair minimum wage (Sweden has no statutory minimum wage; wages are governed entirely by collective agreements).
- Extra pay for inconvenient working hours (OB-ersättning) on evenings and weekends.
- Workplace insurance in case of injury.
If your employer lacks a collective agreement, you must negotiate terms like OB pay, overtime pay, and insurance yourself and make sure they are written directly into your individual employment contract.
3. Tax-Free Limit for 2026: Earn up to SEK 25,042 Tax-Free
If you expect to earn less than SEK 25,042 in total during the entire calendar year 2026, you do not need to pay income tax in Sweden.
- To prevent your employer from automatically withholding tax, you must fill out the form "Intyg för utbetalning av lön utan skatteavdrag" (Declaration of salary payment without tax deduction) from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and submit it to your employer well before your first payday.
- If you earn more than this threshold, you pay tax on the entire amount. You can apply for a tax adjustment (jämkning) if you want to spread the tax burden more evenly.
4. Holiday Pay (Semesterersättning)
Under the Swedish Holiday Act (Semesterlagen), you are always entitled to holiday pay when working a summer job. This must be at least 12% of your total gross salary.
- This can either be paid out monthly along with your salary (and must be clearly specified on your payslip) or as a lump sum at the end of your employment.
- Make sure this is written into your contract so it isn't incorrectly "included" in your regular hourly rate without your knowledge.
5. Rules for Workers Under 18
If you are under 18, special rules under the Swedish Work Environment Act apply to protect your health (read the full rules at the Swedish Work Environment Authority / Arbetsmiljöverket):
- Under 15 (Younger Children): May only perform very light and safe work (e.g., berry picking or light gardening). Requires guardian permission.
- 15–16 (Older Children): May perform normal, non-hazardous work. May work a maximum of 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week during school holidays. Night work between 20:00 and 06:00 is not permitted.
- 16–18 (Youths): May work up to 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. They must not perform hazardous tasks (e.g., heavy lifting or operating dangerous machinery) and are generally not allowed to work night shifts.
