Backend Engineer, Core Platform

Flow Traders is looking for a Staff Engineer to join us in our Amsterdam office. Operating across the full trade lifecycle (pre-trade, execution, and post-trade), you will bridge the gap between engineering, trading, and operations. As a Staff Engineer, you will tackle ambiguous, large-scale problems, set global engineering standards, and scale your impact by mentoring tech leads and engineers across multiple teams.  WHAT YOU WILL DO: STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE & VISION  * Define and own the long-term technical architecture for our trading automation, risk, and post-trade platforms.   * Translate complex, ambiguous business problems into clear, executable technical roadmaps.    * Architect scalable, event-driven systems optimized for high throughput, data integrity, and reliability. Engineering Leadership & Mentorship * Elevate engineering standards across the organization, focusing on system design, observability, reliability, and scalability. * Act as an IC multiplier: mentor senior engineers, guide tech leads, and drive technical alignment across fragmented systems. * Lead efforts to responsibly decommission legacy systems in favor of modern, scalable services. Business & Operational Impact * Partner closely with trading, quant, risk, and operations teams to align technical choices with business value. * Drive automation in post-trade and middle-office workflows (allocations, settlements, reconciliations) to drastically reduce operational risk.   WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED * 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record operating at a Staff, Principal, or cross-team Lead level. * Proven ability to influence senior technical and business stakeholders and drive consensus across multiple teams.  * Deep expertise in building distributed, high-performance, and highly reliable backend systems. * Strong proficiency in at least one (or more) core backend language (Python, Go, C++, or Java).Experience with event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, Flink, Databricks, Dataproc) and data pipelines. * Solid understanding of modern infrastructure, observability, and cloud platforms.   Nice to have * Deep knowledge of specific financial workflows (ETF creation/redemption, clearing, custody). * Experience with financial reference data, symbology, or instrument modeling. * Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (MiFID II, EMIR, SFTR) and their data lineage requirements. * Solid background in financial services, trading, or market making. * Strong working knowledge of the trading lifecycle (order flow, execution, and post-trade/settlement flows).   WHAT WE OFFER At Flow Traders, we create the conditions for hard‑working, high‑performing people to do their best work. As this usage has rapidly increased - we've rearchitected the system for increased stability and scalability. We are also building exciting new features for more advanced workflows and customer observability. This team has a mix of frontend, backend, and reliability engineering skills & projects. Developer Ecosystem: The developer ecosystem team focuses on the development experience and best practices using tools outside of the workspace. We own and govern the core developer ecosystem open-source components: the SDK, the CLI, and Terraform. Apps Developer Experience - This is the team that makes developing Apps on Databricks delightful and easy. We have built an SDK and services for app developers - AppKit. Our Codegen sub-team builds tools that enable agents to generate Apps that work first time. We're currently. working on an MCP server for Cursor/Claude Code and are working on Skills. What we look for: * BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, or a related field * 2+ years of experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript * Passion for user experience and design and a deep understanding of front-end architecture * Comfortable working towards a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables * Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, VueJs/Ember) * Strong familiarity with server-side web technologies (eg: Nodejs, Java, Python, Scala, C#, C++,Go, JVM) * Good knowledge of SQL * Experience with cloud technologies, e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes * Experience in architecting, developing, deploying, and operating large scale distributed systems About Databricks Databricks is the data and AI company.
