We are hiring for Machine Learning Engineering as TL level.  Your Location: This position is CHINA BASED. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Your recruiter will inform you what cities you are able to work from depending on your personal legal working identity and Airbnb internal policies.   The Community You Will Join: Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are at the heart of the Airbnb product. From Trust to Payments, and from Customer Service to Marketing we rely on ML to ensure that guests and hosts have the best possible experience with Airbnb.  The Community Support Products (CSP) Machine Learning team is the core team responsible for driving CSxAI (Customer Support x Artificial Intelligence) initiatives by adopting the Generative AI technologies to enable an intelligent, scalable and exceptional service experience. The team develops and enhances various AI models, ML services and tools including LLM fine-tuning and optimization, RAG/Search,  LLM evaluation and testing automation, feedback-based learning and guardrail for a wide range of applications in Airbnb.  The richness of Airbnb's data, the complexity of its marketplace and the variety innate in our product mean that we need to operate at the state of the art of AI practice. You will have the opportunity to shape these ideas from inception to production, turning visionary concepts into impactful realities.   A Typical Day:  * Envision, champion, and support the development of novel ML systems, product integrations, and performance optimizations to solve real-world problems * Work cross-functionally with product, design, and other engineering counterparts to design and build efficient AI solutions for Airbnb CS products * Learn and share the latest AI/ML technologies with the team across regions( China and the US).    Your Expertise: * PhD/Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience * 9-12 years of ML engineering experience, with ownership responsibility over large-scale software systems.   * Background in the design and development of AI and ML systems and services, and a deep passion for building efficient and scalable ML-powered products * Experience with LLM driven chatbot and Agentic AI products(Gen AI) would be a big plus * Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a team and with teams across the engineering, product & design organizations * Fluency in both English and Mandarin is essential.   Our Commitment To Inclusion & Belonging: Airbnb is committed to working with the broadest talent pool possible. At Staff level, you will set a technical vision and drive execution of solutions that are highly available, secure, efficient, and designed to scale across many markets with the needs of the international business. You will work across product, engineering, data scientists, designer and cross-functional partners to solve these technical challenges and deliver high-quality products for Airbnb.   A Typical Day * Own technical vision and lead effort to architecture, prototype, build and launch solutions for international markets initiatives (market configuration, localization services, partner integrations, compliance-aware experiences, etc). * Lead complex, cross-team execution from design through launch, including team roadmap, technical direction, migration plans, rollout strategy, and long-term operability. * Drive engineering excellence through reliability, performance, security, and cost efficiency. * Influence roadmaps and collaborate with stakeholders across regions, such as drives alignment, resolves tradeoffs, leads through ambiguity. * Mentor engineers both within and outside of the team.   Your Expertise * Fluency in English is required. Japanese or Korean working proficiency is a plus . * 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, including Tech Lead responsibilities (required). * Proven track record leading end-to-end delivery of high-impact, user-facing products—from technical design and implementation through launch and post-launch operations. * Demonstrated ability to set technical direction for a team or multi-team area (e.g., defining architecture, establishing engineering standards, and shaping a long-term technical roadmap). * Strong product mindset: you connect technical decisions to customer outcomes and business impact, and you’re comfortable operating in ambiguity with an iterative, experiment-driven approach. * Expertise designing and operating systems that are highly available, scalable, secure, and cost-efficient, with clear operational readiness. * Strong experience working in cross-functional, global environments, driving alignment and results through influence across teams and time zones. * Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineers, raise the quality bar through reviews and coaching, and establish and drive best practices.

Your challenges will be varied and may include onboarding new datasets, implementing new trading signals, developing portfolio optimization tools, building data visualization frameworks, enhancing our research platform, and performance tuning existing code using efficient numerical algorithms and cluster-computing solutions. As the local lead for our growing Front-office Engineering team in China, you will also be instrumental in hiring, onboarding, and shaping the team from the ground up.   Our Technology Our systems are almost all running on Linux and most of our code is in Python, with the full scientific stack: NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, statsmodels, and scikit-learn to name a few of the libraries we use extensively. We implement the systems that require the highest data throughput in Java. For storage, we rely heavily on MongoDB and MS SQL.  We use Control-M and Airflow for workflow management, Kafka for data pipelines, Bitbucket for source control, Jenkins for continuous integration, Grafana + Prometheus for metrics collection, ELK for log shipping and monitoring, Docker for containerisation, OpenStack for our private cloud, Ansible for architecture automation, and Slack for internal communication.
