A position as PhD fellow in Environmental Radiochemistry is available at the Institute of Energy Technology (IFE) and the work will be conducted at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) in Ås (Norway).
The Institute of Energy Technology (IFE) is an independent research foundation in Norway, with locations in Kjeller and Halden. The Department of Environmental Safety and Radiation Protection (MIST) carries out analyses of radioactive substances in various types of sample materials (environmental samples, food and other commercial products) and has laboratories and measuring equipment for the analysis of samples with very small amounts of radioactivity. The department is one of Norway's largest in this field and is a qualified member of the IAEA's ALMERA (Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity) network. To be a qualified member here, the laboratory must participate with good results in so-called ALMERA proficiency tests organized by the IAEA.
The Tracer Technology Department was established in 1980s and has been pioneer in research and development (R&D) of tracer technology. We performed the first injection of radioactive tracers in the Norwegian continental shelf (Ekofisk) in 1986. Today, we have extended our R&D competence and know-how on tracers for Oil & Gas Industry, tracers for geothermal applications, environmental monitoring, circular economy and applied nuclear technology. We have been active in the development of radionuclides for the pharmaceutical industry, and we are hosting a national infrastructure project.
IFE is part of the Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC). The NNRC is a collaborative effort between IFE, University of Oslo (UiO), and NMBU to increase Norwegian competence and research capacity within the nuclear sciences. The position will have thematic relevance to the research theme 5 (RT) that focuses on environmental chemistry of radionuclides, and it is expected to interact with the RT4 that focuses on radionuclide production and speciation.
At NMBU, the PhD candidate will be part of the Faculty for Environmental Sciences, which has leading international competence in the behaviour of radionuclides in the environment. The team consists of professors, researchers, and PhD students, with a large international network.
This PhD project will focus on transfer and mobility of artificial radionuclides (e.g. Pu, Cs-135, I-129, non-naturally occurring U isotopes) in contaminated environments. A special focus will be on site-specific factors that can alter radionuclide behavior, such as the cycling of redox-sensitive elements and microbially mediated processes in soils. The project integrates the radiochemical analysis with biogeochemical approaches, creating a state-of-the-art approach for understanding the mechanisms governing radionuclide mobility under environmentally relevant conditions. The project will also explore if any links in mobility exist between potential radionuclide contaminants and critical raw materials (e.g., rare earth elements) in the case of legacy waste sites. The completed project will increase the knowledge of radionuclide behavior under subarctic environments and contribute to improved practices within environmental monitoring and emergency preparedness.
Qualification requirements- The applicant must hold a master’s degree in chemistry, radiochemistry, geochemistry, microbiology, or other environmental sciences of relevance.

About the position We invite applications for a PhD Research Fellow position in Computational Nuclear Physics and Reactor Simulations is available at Department of Physics. The PhD Research Fellow will be part of the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC). NNRC is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between Norway’s leading institutions within nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry research: University of Oslo (UiO), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Institute for Energy Technology (IFE). The Centre addresses major research questions within the nuclear field spanning topics from nuclear properties and medical isotope production to reactor simulations and environmental radiochemistry. Starting date as soon as possible, preferably before December 1st, 2026. The fellowship period is three years. A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Project description/work tasks The Nuclear Physics group at UiO is involved in several research themes within the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre (NNRC), from fundamental research within nuclear properties and nuclear fission, to more applied research within nuclear simulations and radionuclide production and speciation. This PhD Research Fellow will mostly contribute to nuclear simulations (reactor simulations). The project will include reactor simulations of future reactor systems with a focus on systems relevant for Norway. The objective is to further develop and validate machine-learning surrogate models derived from high-fidelity multiphysics simulations of reactor transients and quantify how surrogate uncertainties propagate through system safety analysis of nuclear installations, using tools such as open simulations platforms. This research will be part of a larger international collaboration and be a part of the Norwegian Nuclear Research Centre. The candidate is expected to contribute to and partake in activities organised by the Centre. What skills are important in this role? About the position The Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture (TIK) at the University of Oslo (UiO) invites applications for a 3-year PhD Fellowship (position code 1017). The position is affiliated with the research project APPROPRIATE – Licences to appropriate land for societal ends, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The PhD candidate will be based at the TIK Centre and affiliated with the TIK Centre’s STS research group. The position encompasses possibilities for teaching tasks within TIK’s teaching programs, including supervision of candidates and students within these programs, according to the TIK Centre’s needs and the candidate’s profile or interests. If such tasks are agreed upon, the contract will be extended accordingly. About the project APPROPRIATE - Licences to appropriate land for societal ends The licensing system is a key arrangement in Norwegian environmental policy and is both a tool of democracy and a tool for the appropriation of land and natural resources for societal and economic ends. The goal of the APPROPRIATE project is to investigate the licensing system: how different valuation practices play out in planning and decisions making processes, how economic reasoning and other forms of expertise are taken into account, and how dilemmas and conflicts in processes towards accomplishing good licensing procedures are negotiated and handled. The licensing system will be analyzed with a point of departure in the contemporary situation, but will also study the licensing arrangement in its broader historical, political and economic context. APPROPRIATE will focus on two empirical cases in particular: aquaculture and wind power. The PhD position is dedicated to the case of wind power. APPROPRIATE will work as a tight team where the PI will work with the project members on all the WPs, yet with clear distribution and responsibility of tasks. In addition to the PI and the PhD candidate, the project is in the process of employing one postdoctoral fellow. More about the position The PhD candidate will have as their core task WP2 on the case of wind power. The key research questions of this project are: (1) How do licenses value the nature they set out to appropriate for societal ends? (2) How do economic reasoning and reasoning around the conditions of nature encounter and become weighed and valued against one another in licensing practices? (3) What are the economic and philosophical reasoning through which the licensing system is based and (4) how do this act upon the license-regime? In addition this WP will investigate how ‘license-workers’ in their day to day practice, that is bureaucrats, make judgments with regards to the conditions for appropriation and the granting of licenses. A more detailed description of the overall project and its theoretical foundations and methods can be retrieved by the PI, together with a more detailed outline of the work package on wind power. This will guide the applicants in developing their project proposal. The PhD candidate will be collaborating closely with the PI and postdoctor, including on other elements of the project proposal, such as workshops and dissemination activities. The project will also be conducted in exchanges with an international board of experts. The main purpose of the PhD position is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. About the project This PhD position is part of the WP5 Sustainable wind development and related to bird collision risks which is one of the main environmental impacts of onshore and offshore wind turbines on birds. In an offshore setting, many seabird populations are in sharp decline due to climate change and anthropogenic marine activities. There exists yet little knowledge on the extent of collision mortality internationally, due to the difficulty in recording such collision events offshore. Also, existing collision risk models are simplistic in nature and heavily rely on accurate knowledge of avoidance in birds. The PhD will develop an aerodynamic bird collision avoidance model, combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the flow around wind turbines with the aerodynamic characteristics of flying birds to predict collision risk. This model will be fed by existing empirical data on bird flight behavioural responses to wind turbines from various bird radar studies. This model will allow simulation of birds flying within the turbulent airspace of a wind farm, and prediction of the probability of collision at wind turbines. This will be integrated into a Digital Twin (DT) framework to realize augmented reality to inform stakeholders of future environmental impacts of the planned wind farms.
