The Research Program Manager works across PhysicsX's most important research initiatives — from foundation model development to
methods research — partnering with research leaders to turn ambitious research goals into clear plans and sustainable progress.
You will own the operational backbone of our research programmes — planning, milestones, dependencies, and reporting — so that
scientists and engineers can stay focused on the science. Working shoulder-to-shoulder with the Head of Research and technical
leads, you will sit at the intersection of Research, Delivery, Product, and external partners, keeping momentum across multiple
parallel efforts and connecting the technical work to strategy and business outcomes.
This is a London-based role with 2–3 days per week in our central office.

THE TEAM Graphcore Research participates in both fundamental and applied research, to characterise the computational requirements of machine intelligence and to demonstrate how hardware can drive the next generation of innovative AI models. We publish at leading AI/ML conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR) as well as specialist workshops, and collaborate with other research teams and organisations across the world. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES * Generate AI/ML ideas, design experiments, implement them & evaluate results. * Prepare, submit & present your work to AI conferences and workshops. * Provide technical insight to internal teams by designing experiments and delivering clear, actionable reports. * Collaborate with researchers, silicon and software engineers at Graphcore to help define, build and test Graphcore’s next generation of AI hardware. ABOUT YOU: Essential: * Master’s, PhD or equivalent experience in a technical discipline (e.g., Maths, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry). * Python programming in a modern deep learning framework, e.g. PyTorch or JAX. * Familiar with deep learning fundamentals: models, optimisation, evaluation and scaling. * Capable of designing, executing and reporting from ML experiments. * Lower-level programming for hardware efficiency, e.g. C++/CUDA/Triton. * Practical familiarity with hardware capabilities for deep learning – threads, caches, vector & matrix engines, data dependencies, bus widths and throttling. * Practical familiarity with software stacks for deep learning – compilation, kernel fusion, XLA/ATen ops, streams, and asynchronous execution Desirable: * Mathematics skills to support the above: calculus, probability theory and linear algebra. * Experience submitting papers to international scientific conferences or workshops. WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE * Enthusiasm about developing machine learning solutions, especially deep learning and/or probabilistic methods, and associated supporting software solutions for science and engineering. * Ability to work autonomously and scope and effectively deliver projects across a variety of domains. * Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyse issues, identify causes, and recommend solutions quickly. * Excellent collaboration and communication skills — with teams and customers alike. * MSc or PhD in computer science, machine learning, applied statistics, mathematics, physics, engineering, software engineering, or a related field, with a record of experience in any of the following: * Scientific computing; * High-performance computing (CPU / GPU clusters); * Parallelised / distributed training for large / foundation models. * Ideally >2 years of experience in a data-driven role in a professional setting, with exposure to: * scaling and optimising ML models, training and serving foundation models at scale (federated learning a bonus); * distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Dask) and high-performance computing frameworks (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, Triton); * cloud computing (on hyper-scaler platforms, e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP); * building machine learning models and pipelines in Python, using common libraries and frameworks (e.g., NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, PyTorch, JAX), especially including deep learning applications; * C/C++ for computer vision, geometry processing, or scientific computing; * software engineering concepts and best practices (e.g., versioning, testing, CI/CD, API design, MLOps); * container-ization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Slurm); * writing pipelines and experiment environments, including running experiments in pipelines in a systematic way.
