Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default
At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014,
founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions
worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online.
Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN,
Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their
personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of
lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some
cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk
situations.
Proton today supports over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from
the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process.
Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online. We believe smaller teams
of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. Proton has become profitable and reached
scale without relying upon VC funding, largely due to superior talent that allows us to do things faster, more creatively, and
more efficiently.
We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our
structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can
truly be proud of. Check our social media pages to learn more about us: Twitter, Reddit, Instagram.

About Proton Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we’ve built the world’s largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar—tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives! We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 700+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here! THE TEAM Our business unit, Inbox, is a cross-functional team of about 60 engineers, product managers, designers, and data analysts driving the development of Proton Mail, the company's flagship product, and Proton Calendar. Our mission is to create an end-to-end encrypted solution with a better user experience than any other productivity product on the market. It is not always an easy journey, but it is one that offers the chance to create meaningful impact and drive lasting change. The Platform team is a subteam of Inbox, responsible for the core components reused across Mail and Calendar. Rather than owning a single feature, the team builds the shared foundations, the tooling and systems other Inbox teams build on top of, so that Mail and Calendar can scale reliably. Over the next year, the team's priority is efficiency and cost reduction. The Platform team is partnering with the product team on new systems, such as how client apps receive updates from the server (e.g. new email and calendar event delivery), while also improving the performance of systems already in production. Quality and performance are treated as first-class concerns in everything the team ships, not an afterthought. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Platform team, you'll bring hands-on experience with data-driven delivery, monitoring, and how the team plans and prioritizes its work. You'll work closely with the product team to design new systems, and with the rest of the team to improve the performance of what's already running. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Architect and develop core systems: Design and build core, cross-product systems shared by Proton Mail and Calendar, with scale and cost-efficiency as first-class constraints. * Performance: Improve the performance of existing systems, using monitoring and metrics to identify where time and infrastructure spend are going and where to cut. Drive cost-reduction and efficiency initiatives across shared platform components, from proposal to production * Data-driven delivery: Bring a data-driven approach to technical decisions and delivery planning, shaping how the team measures and prioritizes its work * Collaboration: Work closely with a team of backend and clients engineers, with a strong emphasis on quality and performance in everything shipped * Testing: Develop and implement comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests and integration tests, to ensure the reliability of core systems. JOB REQUIREMENTS * Strong experience in backend development, with a track record of designing, building and scaling systems that serve a large user base (100M+) * Demonstrated ability to improve the performance and cost-efficiency of systems already in production * Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tooling (e.g. Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent), and a data-driven approach * Solid understanding of SQL (MySQL preferred) and data modeling * Experience leading a technical initiative end-to-end, from design through production BONUS POINTS FOR * Experience with client-server sync or push-notification systems * Experience with Kubernetes or other containerization technologies * Experience with PHP/Symfony, Rust, or Python * Full-stack experience, comfortable working across the frontend as well as the backend What We Offer * Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users — not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here) * Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win. * Technology: you'll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work. * Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you'll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one. * Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn't an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day * In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London and more, you'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face with people who genuinely care about what they're building * Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what's for lunch. * Transport: getting to the office shouldn't cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you. * Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team — because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started. Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion At Proton, we believe diversity drives innovation and strengthens our mission to provide privacy as a default for all. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic background, feel valued and empowered. ENGINEERING MANAGER, AGENT EXPERIENCE Join us in our mission to transform the way people shop and eat, where impact, innovation and growth drive everything we do. Our Engineering teams tackle complex technical challenges across a global, three-sided marketplace, building and scaling systems that serve millions of customers, riders and partners every day. From real-time logistics to resilient infrastructure and marketplace optimisation, we design, build and operate technology that powers Deliveroo’s growth at scale. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team in London (hybrid). In this role, you’ll lead and grow a full-stack team, building the back-office workspace at the centre of how customer and courier support is delivered across Deliveroo, DoorDash and Wolt. Get to know our Engineering team - what drives us, how we work, and what you can expect. What You’ll Be Doing You’ll be joining the Agent Experience team, which sits at the centre of unifying support across Deliveroo, DoorDash and Wolt. The team builds the back-office workspace used by over 30,000 support agents globally, running on an in-house chat platform that handles tens of millions of conversations a month. It’s replacing a fragmented stack of legacy tools with a single, modern platform - a real-time inbox, multi-channel communications, supervisor tooling, a centralised resolutions toolkit, and an AI layer that automates routine work - owned end-to-end, from frontend to backend, as all three brands are migrated onto one system. The work is high-scale, real-time and business-critical: every second saved for an agent and every screen simplified makes a real difference to the customers and couriers waiting for help. Here’s what your day-to-day might look like: * Lead, coach and grow a team of ~7–8 frontend, full-stack and backend engineers, and develop their careers. * Scope and break down projects into actionable, shippable work. * Run the team’s rituals - sprint planning, stand-ups and retros. * Track progress, remove blockers, and manage scope and timeline trade-offs. * Represent the team in planning and stakeholder discussions, and align with product, design and other engineering teams on priorities. * Ensure the team maintains high operational excellence - managed technical debt, SRE and healthy on-call. * Hire and grow the team, and stay technically engaged through architecture and design discussions. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO THRIVE Our ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in some of these areas and curiosity to grow in others: * 6+ years of commercial engineering experience, including 2+ years leading a team. * A full-stack background with primary depth in backend development (e.g. Go, Python or Node.js), and willingness to contribute to the frontend (e.g. React) when the team needs it. * A T-shaped profile - broad across technologies rather than specialised in a single one. * A heavy adopter of AI, both for productivity and for engineering (e.g. using Claude Code to increase the team’s delivery velocity). * Strong communication skills, and comfort operating in an ambiguous, dynamic environment where operational priorities shift. * A track record of running complex projects that span and affect multiple engineering teams. * Experience hiring, recruiting and mentoring engineers, and setting clear expectations and a strong team culture. * Low ego and a strong sense of ownership - team-first, able to balance servant leadership with making the tough calls. NICE TO HAVE * Experience with infrastructure and cloud tooling (e.g. Kubernetes, AWS, Datadog). * An SRE background - on-call experience, SLOs and alerts management. * Experience building internal tooling, operational platforms or other complex, data-dense product UIs. Why Join Us? At Deliveroo, you’ll do work that matters, solving real-world problems in a three-sided marketplace that’s constantly evolving. We’re food lovers, problem solvers, community builders and more, brought together by a shared drive to make things better. Working here you can expect to: 🔧 Solve meaningful problems at real scale Work on a complex, always-on marketplace that impacts millions every day. 🌱See your impact, fast Ship, test and improve ideas quickly in a low-hierarchy, high-ownership environment. 🧠Grow through challenge and ownership Take on big, ambiguous problems and accelerate your career with strong support. 🌎A culture built for builders High standards, collaboration, flexible working and continuous learning. 💰 Share in the success you help create Competitive salary and equity options, so you’re rewarded for the impact you make. ➡️ Want a deeper look at how we build? We work at the intersection of security and simplicity: our products must inspire trust without feeling intimidating, and feel refined without sacrificing clarity. Designers are embedded within engineering teams and involved from the very beginning — problem framing, planning, implementation, and quality assurance — not brought in at the mockup stage. The team is organized as a guild: high autonomy, shared standards, and real influence over how design is practiced across Proton. We hold a high craft bar. Typography, layout, spacing, color, iconography, motion — the details most companies treat as polish, we treat as the product. If your best work is the work itself — pixels you're proud to sign — you'll be in good company here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT YOU'LL DO * Own the visual and interaction quality of one or more Proton products — from early concepts through production, until what ships matches the design intent * Design interfaces that make sophisticated privacy and security features feel intuitive and trustworthy — without oversimplifying what's underneath * Craft visual systems — typography, hierarchy, spacing, color, iconography — that scale across millions of users * Design motion, transitions, and micro-interactions that add meaning, not decoration * Create icons, illustrations, and visual assets that strengthen Proton's visual language and stay consistent across products * Raise the team's craft bar through your own execution, design critiques, and contributions to the shared design system * Partner with Product Managers and engineers to shape solutions early, surface constraints, and stay hands-on through implementation ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHO YOU ARE * 5+ years designing and shipping consumer (B2C) digital products, with a portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual craft across real products — typography, layout, hierarchy, spacing, color, interaction, and motion (portfolio required with application) * Proven ability to simplify genuinely complex problems into interfaces that feel obvious in hindsight * Experience building and evolving design systems — not just consuming them — and understanding how consistency and flexibility work together * Experience designing motion and micro-interactions as integral parts of production UI, not afterthoughts * Highly proficient in Figma — moving fluidly from exploration to high-fidelity designs and interactive prototypes * Ownership beyond your immediate work — you notice quality issues and inconsistencies, and you act on them Nice to Have * Background in visual communication, graphic design, typography, illustration, or motion design * Portfolio showcasing illustration, iconography, or visual identity work * Familiarity with front-end implementation and the practical constraints of HTML and CSS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT WE OFFER * Work that Matters: Millions of people trust Proton with their privacy.
