JOIN PROTON AND BUILD A BETTER INTERNET WHERE PRIVACY IS THE DEFAULT
Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we've
built the world's largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and
Proton Calendar — tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some
situations, Proton has literally helped save lives.
We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 700+ team members across
50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize
impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Check our open-source
projects here.
Proton's Design team shapes the visual and interaction layer across Mail, Drive, VPN, Pass, and Calendar — products used by
millions of people, many of whom rely on them in high-stakes moments. We work at the intersection of security and simplicity: our
products must inspire trust without feeling intimidating, and feel refined without sacrificing clarity. Designers are embedded
within engineering teams and involved from the very beginning — problem framing, planning, implementation, and quality assurance —
not brought in at the mockup stage. The team is organized as a guild: high autonomy, shared standards, and real influence over how
design is practiced across Proton.
We hold a high craft bar. Typography, layout, spacing, color, iconography, motion — the details most companies treat as polish, we
treat as the product. If your best work is the work itself — pixels you're proud to sign — you'll be in good company here.

Employee Applicant Privacy Notice Who we are: Shape a brighter financial future with us. Together with our members, we’re changing the way people think about and interact with personal finance. We’re a next-generation financial services company and national bank using innovative, mobile-first technology to help our millions of members reach their goals. The industry is going through an unprecedented transformation, and we’re at the forefront. We’re proud to come to work every day knowing that what we do has a direct impact on people’s lives, with our core values guiding us every step of the way. Join us to invest in yourself, your career, and the financial world. THE ROLE: SoFi is looking for a strategic leader to own and evolve our educational content program, with a focus on financial news literacy and newsletters — from big-picture vision to day-to-day execution. The Senior Content Strategist will be responsible for driving the direction of SoFi’s newsletter program, including a wide variety of campaigns and content programs connected to it. We are looking for someone with demonstrated experience managing a newsletter, content product, or editorial program as a business, not just as a publication. If you love transforming vision into reality, thrive in complex cross-functional environments, and happily design operating models for new programs from scratch, this role is for you. Newsletters and educational email are one format in SoFi’s rich and evolving multimedia content engine, so overseeing this program requires multidisciplinary content marketing expertise. You understand that a newsletter, email bootcamp, or fin lit curriculum must earn its place in a subscriber's inbox — and that doing so requires a deep understanding of your audience. You'll use audience insights and performance data to ensure every issue, feature, and supporting asset delivers genuine relevance and utility. You are an expert communicator, an entrepreneurial operator, and a data-literate strategist who knows how to measure what matters and use those insights to drive meaningful change. Ideally you have experience with personal finance and investing focused content, with practice translating complex concepts into digestible stories across multiple formats. Fluency with AI-assisted tools is a requirement, as you'll design and operate workflows that use AI to accelerate research, sourcing, and production. Awareness of and connection with industry—content, media, and financial technology—will ensure SoFi’s content program is innovative and culturally aware. You'll join a brand-oriented content team whose mission is to make financial knowledge and empowerment more accessible. In a world of misinformation, our goal is to deliver credible, clear, and compelling intelligence and insight. WHAT YOU’LL DO: STRATEGY & DIRECTION * Define and own the strategic vision for SoFi's newsletter program, setting a clear direction that balances audience value with business impact — and evolving that direction based on performance insights. * Build and maintain a compelling business case for the newsletter program; present it with authority to senior stakeholders, adapting your narrative for marketing leaders, product partners, and executives alike. * Develop and execute a subscriber growth strategy that spans organic, paid media, paid social, lifecycle marketing, and content syndication across external platforms — managing campaign oversight end-to-end from creative asset production to performance analysis and recommendations for next steps. * Leverage audience insights and performance data to ensure the newsletter consistently delivers relevance to our target readers, iterating on content strategy as those insights evolve. * Identify opportunities to expand the newsletter portfolio with the introduction of new content products, bringing creativity and innovation to the vision, planning and execution of these new ideas. * Identify opportunities for AI integration across content sourcing, creation, and distribution phases of workflow. Manage implementation, reporting, and iteration with vendors, technology partners, and core newsletter teams to maximize AI impact. CROSS-FUNCTIONAL LEADERSHIP * Build strong working relationships with product marketing, editorial, brand strategy, social, data science, lifecycle marketing, product, and design teams. * Product Marketing & Business Units: * Identify moments to integrate SoFi products into newsletters * Editorial & Creative: * Identify appropriate tone and approach for positioning products in the context of education rather than promotion * Submit briefs and work directly with the design team to generate custom creative; guide internal creative resources with clear direction and high aesthetic standards * Social & Paid Media: * Identify opportunities to amplify newsletter content on social channels and tap into community conversations * Design subscriber growth campaign opportunities with greatest ROI, clearly conveying newsletter program objectives to ensure deeply impactful results * Marketing Data Science: * Provide clear direction on newsletter objectives, including how OKRs and KPIs will reinforce newsletter’s value to business * Ensure newsletter infrastructure is set up to capture data required to fulfill newsletter strategy, and that data captured is being translated into usable insights for editorial and product marketing teams * Marketing Technology: * Ensure evolutions required to SoFi’s technology stack are accounted for in the product roadmap by representing newsletter requirements * External vendors: * Grow subscriber audiences with innovative third party tools * Integrate AI for content production efficiencies * Leverage content measurement & reporting resources * Provide oversight to the newsletter program’s operations, spanning editorial planning, production, and measurement. * Design a system of governance and review for the newsletter program, ensuring editorial workflows, compliance processes, executive reviews and production timelines run smoothly * Establish and oversee a structured A/B testing framework in partnership with lifecycle marketing; build a culture of experimentation and learning within the program * Set the operating model for new newsletter franchises, designing the blueprint for how cross-functional teams will collaborate to bring new content products to life What you’ll need: * You are a strategic thinker and confident communicator who can distill complex ideas into clear, compelling documents and decks that move people to action. * You have 8+ years of experience in content strategy, brand journalism, or content marketing.. * You have a proven track record of subscriber growth and audience development, with hands-on familiarity with paid media and paid social as distribution levers — not just organic editorial. * You are data-literate: you know how to define the right KPIs, partner with analytics teams, interpret performance dashboards, and translate findings into strategic decisions — including knowing what questions to ask when you don't have the answers yet. * You are a natural cross-functional operator who builds trust with stakeholders across disciplines — from engineers to brand designers to product marketers — and leads through influence when you have no direct authority. * You are entrepreneurial and adaptive: you parachute into unfamiliar territory, rapidly develop context, form a point of view, and move with confidence. You are not unnerved by ambiguity. * Ideally: You have experience with fintech, personal finance, investing, or a similarly complex category where audience trust and content credibility are hard-won. * You hold a Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred); 6+ years considered with demonstrated strategic leadership. Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014, founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online. Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations. Proton is a profitable company that does not rely upon VC funding, supporting over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online. Hiring at Proton is highly selective, with less than 1% of candidates hired. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. You will have the opportunity work with many of the world's top minds in their fields, ranging from former international math and science olympiad winners to chess champions. We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. The Team Our business unit, Inbox, is a cross-functional team of about 60 engineers, product managers, designers and data analysts driving the development of Proton Mail, the company’s flagship product, and Proton Calendar. Our mission is to create an end-to-end encrypted solution with a better user experience than any other productivity products on the market. While it is not always an easy journey, it is one that offers the chance to create meaningful impact and drive lasting change that we are fully committed to. The Inbox Desktop team is responsible for developing desktop clients of Inbox, specifically the Proton Mail Desktop App, Proton Mail Bridge, and the Export tool. We are in the process of rebuilding our client applications on a new, innovative technology stack centred around cross-platform Rust code. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take the technical ownership of the Proton Mail Desktop App on Windows and Linux platforms. Currently, we use many languages and frameworks in the team like Golang, C++, Qt, JS, TypeScript, React, or Electron. We use standard tools for communication and work organization (Git, GitLab, GitHub, GitLab CI, Jira, Confluence). Our backend runs on premise in Proton’s data centers, and all our client-code is open source and GPL3. In the Inbox organization, we believe that a psychologically safe environment is critical to foster innovation, collaboration, and growth. We are rooted in science, and according to both academic research and empirical evidence, teams that feel safe to take risks and express their ideas are more likely to be innovative and perform better: you will play a key role in helping us creating such an environment across the entire organization. What you will do * Research: Assessing new technologies, supporting cross team and cross business unit technical decision making. * Work breakdown: Transforming product specifications into technical requirements and lead your team to their successful implementation. * Product development: Ensuring high-quality user experiences within our product portfolio by implementing, deploying and maintaining existing and new features. * Scalability: Enhancing software development lifecycle, tools, and processes to improve developer experience and to ensure our solutions are scalable. * Coding: Writing clear, concise and testable code to maintain and elevate the quality of our codebase. * Project management: Managing the scoping, planning and execution of new features, technical initiatives and greenfield projects. * Mentoring: Fostering a culture of learning, creativity, and accountability for the best possible work through mentorship and team development, role modelling quality assurance and performance optimization. Job requirements While we prefer candidates who cover the entire skillset, don't hesitate to apply if you're not an exact match, as we're willing to help you grow in certain areas. * Experience: Significant, relevant professional software development experience with Rust programming language, or with very strong background in modern C++ and reasonably complex Rust pet projects. * Desktop software development: Experience in developing high quality, fast, Windows and Linux cross-platform desktop applications. Familiarity with different native and cross-platform desktop UI frameworks (e.g. Avalonia UI, Qt, Electron, etc.). Experience in working both on user interface and on business logic. * Product mindset: A product mindset with a focus on offering outstanding user experience in a successful business environment. Familiarity with key business and product performance metrics. * Engineering leadership: Ability to make architectural decisions and contribute to strategic planning and product directions. Experience in developing scalable engineering solutions. Able to write effective engineering documents (size, quality, content). * Collaborative Skills: Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, excellent written communication skills, and experience working in a distributed team. * Problem-solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot customer issues remotely while protecting our user’s privacy. Knows what proactive solutions to implement to prepare for such scenarios. * Security focus: Understanding of secure coding practices and a commitment to maintaining high levels of security and privacy. * Bachelor's or Master's degree: In Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Bonus Points For: * Experience with macOS or mobile cross-platform development. * Familiarity with using unidirectional data-flow (a.k.a. Elm-like) frameworks * Experience with Grafana, Metabase or other monitoring platforms. * Experience in B2B, preferably in online privacy and/or productivity contexts. THE TEAM Our business unit, Inbox, is a cross-functional team of about 60 engineers, product managers, designers, and data analysts driving the development of Proton Mail, the company's flagship product, and Proton Calendar. Our mission is to create an end-to-end encrypted solution with a better user experience than any other productivity product on the market. It is not always an easy journey, but it is one that offers the chance to create meaningful impact and drive lasting change. The Platform team is a subteam of Inbox, responsible for the core components reused across Mail and Calendar. Rather than owning a single feature, the team builds the shared foundations, the tooling and systems other Inbox teams build on top of, so that Mail and Calendar can scale reliably. Over the next year, the team's priority is efficiency and cost reduction. The Platform team is partnering with the product team on new systems, such as how client apps receive updates from the server (e.g. new email and calendar event delivery), while also improving the performance of systems already in production. Quality and performance are treated as first-class concerns in everything the team ships, not an afterthought. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Platform team, you'll bring hands-on experience with data-driven delivery, monitoring, and how the team plans and prioritizes its work. You'll work closely with the product team to design new systems, and with the rest of the team to improve the performance of what's already running. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Architect and develop core systems: Design and build core, cross-product systems shared by Proton Mail and Calendar, with scale and cost-efficiency as first-class constraints. * Performance: Improve the performance of existing systems, using monitoring and metrics to identify where time and infrastructure spend are going and where to cut. Drive cost-reduction and efficiency initiatives across shared platform components, from proposal to production * Data-driven delivery: Bring a data-driven approach to technical decisions and delivery planning, shaping how the team measures and prioritizes its work * Collaboration: Work closely with a team of backend and clients engineers, with a strong emphasis on quality and performance in everything shipped * Testing: Develop and implement comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests and integration tests, to ensure the reliability of core systems. JOB REQUIREMENTS * Strong experience in backend development, with a track record of designing, building and scaling systems that serve a large user base (100M+) * Demonstrated ability to improve the performance and cost-efficiency of systems already in production * Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tooling (e.g. Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent), and a data-driven approach * Solid understanding of SQL (MySQL preferred) and data modeling * Experience leading a technical initiative end-to-end, from design through production BONUS POINTS FOR * Experience with client-server sync or push-notification systems * Experience with Kubernetes or other containerization technologies * Experience with PHP/Symfony, Rust, or Python * Full-stack experience, comfortable working across the frontend as well as the backend What We Offer * Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users — not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here) * Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win. * Technology: you'll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work. * Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you'll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one. * Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn't an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day * In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London and more, you'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face with people who genuinely care about what they're building * Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what's for lunch. * Transport: getting to the office shouldn't cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you. * Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team — because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started.
