Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default
At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014,
founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions
worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online.
Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN,
Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their
personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of
lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some
cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk
situations.
Proton is a profitable company that does not rely upon VC funding, supporting over 100 million user accounts with a growing team
of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence,
learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how
business is conducted online.
Hiring at Proton is highly selective, with less than 1% of candidates hired. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will
always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. You will have the opportunity work with many of the world's top minds
in their fields, ranging from former international math and science olympiad winners to chess champions.
We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our
structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can
truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here!
The Team
Our business unit, Inbox, is a cross-functional team of about 60 engineers, product managers, designers and data analysts driving
the development of Proton Mail, the company’s flagship product, and Proton Calendar. Our mission is to create an end-to-end
encrypted solution with a better user experience than any other productivity products on the market. While it is not always an
easy journey, it is one that offers the chance to create meaningful impact and drive lasting change that we are fully committed
to.
The Inbox Desktop team is responsible for developing desktop clients of Inbox, specifically the Proton Mail Desktop App, Proton
Mail Bridge, and the Export tool. We are in the process of rebuilding our client applications on a new, innovative technology
stack centred around cross-platform Rust code. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take the technical ownership of
the Proton Mail Desktop App on Windows and Linux platforms.
Currently, we use many languages and frameworks in the team like Golang, C++, Qt, JS, TypeScript, React, or Electron. We use
standard tools for communication and work organization (Git, GitLab, GitHub, GitLab CI, Jira, Confluence). Our backend runs on
premise in Proton’s data centers, and all our client-code is open source and GPL3.
Purpose of the role
As a Senior Software Engineer in the Inbox Desktop team, you will play a crucial role in driving the development of one of
Proton's most vital desktop offerings, the Proton Mail Desktop App. We expect you to be customer-centric, continuous learner,
passionate about technology and usability. You are adept at turning technical complexities into seamless user experiences.
Effective teamwork, data-driven decision-making, using APIs wisely, collaboration with Product, Design, and with other teams are
essential aspects of this role.
In the Inbox organization, we believe that a psychologically safe environment is critical to foster innovation, collaboration, and
growth. We are rooted in science, and according to both academic research and empirical evidence, teams that feel safe to take
risks and express their ideas are more likely to be innovative and perform better: you will play a key role in helping us creating
such an environment across the entire organization.

Finance at Rohlik is being rebuilt to run on AI. We already have agents in production that chase overdue payments, process invoices, allocate cash and clear the team's inbox. The pieces work. What we need now is one person to own the whole thing and make it deliver at scale. ROLE OVERVIEW This is a new role that owns how AI and automation reshape of the finance operating model across the Group. You will take a programme that is already live across procure to pay, order to cash and our shared services centre, and turn it from a set of promising experiments into the way finance actually runs. You report to the Group CFO. You inherit a small team and a live roadmap, and you own the result. You decide what gets automated first, you build and ship with AI tools when that is the fastest way, and you hold every workstream to a number. The role is deliberately hands on. You should be close enough to the work to build an agent or connect two systems through an API with AI assistance, even though you are not a software developer. You should also be senior enough to redesign how finance works and bring the rest of the business with you. WHY THIS ROLE IS EXCITING * You’ll inherit a live AI programme with real agents, real data and real impact from day one — not a greenfield slide deck. * You’ll shape how Finance actually runs across the Group as we move toward the next stage of growth — including the journey toward IPO readiness. * You’ll have access to a top-notch AI-first tech stack and the freedom to use it pragmatically. * You’ll work directly with the Group CFO, with fast decisions and no corporate red tape. * Your good ideas will be implemented almost immediately — not parked in a roadmap waiting for HQ approval. * You’ll lead a small team, but this is not a “manager from a distance” role. It’s highly hands-on, high-impact, and built for someone who wants to make things move fast. WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU * Own the AI and automation agenda across finance, from strategy through delivery to measured impact. * Lead process redesign the right way: map and understand the as-is, then design an agentic-first to-be rather than automating the old steps. * Bring the live programme to its targets, with a clear owner, baseline and deadline behind every workstream. * Redesign core finance processes around AI and agents, starting with close, reporting and forecasting. * Build and ship yourself when it is faster, using AI assisted tools to create agents and connect systems such as NetSuite, Rossum and n8n. * Lead and grow the team (three today) and raise AI fluency across finance and the SSC so the business can use what you build. * Track what matters and report it straight: automation rate, close time, cash allocation speed, cost and effort taken out. * Roll out across our five markets, balancing local reality against one Group standard. WHAT WE LOOK FOR You have probably spent time in strategy consulting or in a transformation role, and you are now genuinely excited by what AI can do. You are a sharp generalist who can walk into a messy process, find the real problem, and fix it. You are as comfortable in a CFO pre-read as you are in the AI first tool building the thing. * A track record of leading transformation or automation programmes that actually delivered. A consulting, operations or generalist operator background all fit. * Hands on with AI. You can build agents and integrate APIs with AI assistance. You are not a software engineer and you do not need to be, but the tooling does not scare you. * A good grasp of how a finance function runs, or the speed to learn it fast. * You set baselines, name owners, hit deadlines, and say so early when something slips. * You can lead a small team and still do the work yourself. * You prioritise by impact and move fast. Better done than perfect. * You bring finance, tech and operations along with you. * Fluent in English. other languages will be an advantage. * Regular travel to Prague HQ required (min. 4 days per month) WHAT WE OFFER * Unlimited vacation days to support a healthy work-life balance * Monthly vouchers: €45 tax-free via become.1 * €20 monthly internet allowance * Knuspr Xtra account and 10% discount in the form of Knuspr credits / cashback * Great discounts through Corporate Benefits – fitness, travel, tickets, shopping and much more * Real growth: we’re not a traditional corporate. * Knuspr vibe: an international team, flat hierarchy, and a first-name culture where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn
About Proton Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we’ve built the world’s largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar—tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives! We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 700+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here! THE TEAM Our business unit, Inbox, is a cross-functional team of about 60 engineers, product managers, designers, and data analysts driving the development of Proton Mail, the company's flagship product, and Proton Calendar. Our mission is to create an end-to-end encrypted solution with a better user experience than any other productivity product on the market. It is not always an easy journey, but it is one that offers the chance to create meaningful impact and drive lasting change. The Platform team is a subteam of Inbox, responsible for the core components reused across Mail and Calendar. Rather than owning a single feature, the team builds the shared foundations, the tooling and systems other Inbox teams build on top of, so that Mail and Calendar can scale reliably. Over the next year, the team's priority is efficiency and cost reduction. The Platform team is partnering with the product team on new systems, such as how client apps receive updates from the server (e.g. new email and calendar event delivery), while also improving the performance of systems already in production. Quality and performance are treated as first-class concerns in everything the team ships, not an afterthought. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Platform team, you'll bring hands-on experience with data-driven delivery, monitoring, and how the team plans and prioritizes its work. You'll work closely with the product team to design new systems, and with the rest of the team to improve the performance of what's already running. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Architect and develop core systems: Design and build core, cross-product systems shared by Proton Mail and Calendar, with scale and cost-efficiency as first-class constraints. * Performance: Improve the performance of existing systems, using monitoring and metrics to identify where time and infrastructure spend are going and where to cut. Drive cost-reduction and efficiency initiatives across shared platform components, from proposal to production * Data-driven delivery: Bring a data-driven approach to technical decisions and delivery planning, shaping how the team measures and prioritizes its work * Collaboration: Work closely with a team of backend and clients engineers, with a strong emphasis on quality and performance in everything shipped * Testing: Develop and implement comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests and integration tests, to ensure the reliability of core systems. JOB REQUIREMENTS * Strong experience in backend development, with a track record of designing, building and scaling systems that serve a large user base (100M+) * Demonstrated ability to improve the performance and cost-efficiency of systems already in production * Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tooling (e.g. Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent), and a data-driven approach * Solid understanding of SQL (MySQL preferred) and data modeling * Experience leading a technical initiative end-to-end, from design through production BONUS POINTS FOR * Experience with client-server sync or push-notification systems * Experience with Kubernetes or other containerization technologies * Experience with PHP/Symfony, Rust, or Python * Full-stack experience, comfortable working across the frontend as well as the backend What We Offer * Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users — not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here) * Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win. * Technology: you'll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work. * Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you'll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one. * Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn't an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day * In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London and more, you'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face with people who genuinely care about what they're building * Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what's for lunch. * Transport: getting to the office shouldn't cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you. * Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team — because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started.
