As a Senior Software Engineer on the Data Platform team within the Platform group, you will help build the systems that centralize all of Coinbase's internal and third-party data. The Data Platform team makes it easy for teams across the company to access, process, and transform data for analytics, machine learning, and powering end-user experiences. You'll contribute to the full spectrum of our systems, from foundational data storage and processing to scalable pipelines, frameworks, and internal applications that make data efficiently available to every team at Coinbase. What you'll do: * Own the design, development, and operation of foundational data services spanning cloud data warehouses, data lakes, orchestration (Airflow), batch processing (Spark, SQL), streaming (Kafka), query federation, and real-time event aggregation stores. * Build and maintain data integration and processing SDKs used by internal services and product teams throughout Coinbase to interact with the data platform reliably at scale. * Deliver self-service applications that empower users to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot their own data pipelines running on our platform infrastructure. * Architect end-to-end data security and observability services, including access controls across multiple storage and access layers, data quality tracking, dataset cataloging, lineage, and usage auditing. * Partner with data analysts, ML engineers, and security and compliance teams to convert functional requests into reusable, scalable patterns and assemble data microservices into platforms for critical business verticals. Required Skills and Experience: * 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering, with hands-on experience building and operating data systems or data pipelines in production. * Proficiency in Python, Go, or Java for backend development, with demonstrated ability to build services that process and serve data at scale. * Experience with data infrastructure patterns including scale-out architectures, caching layers, key/value stores, and columnar storage systems. * Hands-on experience with SQL, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, or similar data processing and orchestration frameworks in production environments. * Experience with data security, access control, or data observability systems, including cataloging, lineage, or quality monitoring. * Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality. Built largely on CNCF technologies including Kubernetes and Istio, this platform underpins the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of our entire product suite. You'll design and ship tooling, automation, and net-new capabilities that make it easy for hundreds of engineers to deploy and operate critical services, while partnering closely with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams to raise the bar across the stack. What you'll do: * Own the design, build, and operation of Kubernetes cluster management tooling and automation that keeps our compute platform reliable and self-healing at scale. * Build developer-facing tooling and workflows that improve how engineers across Coinbase interact with Kubernetes, with a heavy emphasis on integrating AI-driven processes and support. * Deliver net-new compute capabilities for service owners, such as one-off jobs, cron scheduling, deployment strategies, EFS support, and automated right-sizing. * Drive operational excellence by automating toil, reducing on-call burden, and continuously improving platform observability and incident response. * Partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams to ensure the compute platform meets Coinbase's standards for security, uptime, and performance. Required Skills and Experience: * 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years building and operating Kubernetes or similar compute orchestration systems (e.g., Mesos, Nomad, ECS). * Hands-on experience with AWS and/or GCP infrastructure services (e.g., EC2, EKS, IAM, VPC, networking) in a production environment at scale. * Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and operate distributed infrastructure systems, including diagnosing complex failures and driving them to root-cause resolution. * Hands-on experience with the CNCF ecosystem (e.g., Helm, Prometheus, ArgoCD, Envoy) and a track record of applying these tools to solve real infrastructure problems. * Proven ability to apply AI tooling to infrastructure workflows, improving automation, developer productivity, or operational efficiency. * Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Blockchain Networks team within the Platform group, you'll build the critical infrastructure that integrates blockchain protocols with Coinbase's internal services for new assets, stablecoins, and staking. This team translates complex blockchain operations and state machines into simple, reliable APIs that product teams across Coinbase depend on. You'll own multi-quarter technical initiatives and ship platform primitives that directly improve the latency, reliability, and cost of our crypto stack.
