As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Data Platform team within Platform, you'll define and lead the technical strategy for Coinbase's data infrastructure, spanning ingestion, transformation, warehousing, streaming, and serving systems. This is a foundational role at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, and AI-readiness, reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering. You'll set architectural direction, drive multi-quarter roadmaps, and transition the organization from managed-service dependency toward engineering-built, platform-grade infrastructure that powers everything from fraud detection to modern multi-agent AI architectures. What you'll do: * Own the technical strategy and architecture for Data Platform, setting direction across data ingestion, transformation, warehousing, streaming, and serving systems while driving engineering-led cost reduction at the infrastructure layer. * Architect data infrastructure to natively support AI and ML workloads, ensuring pipelines, data lake systems, and compute can power ML training, feature stores, real-time inference, and multi-agent AI architectures at scale. * Drive the evolution to near-real-time data availability, enabling downstream teams across Coinbase to act on fresher data for fraud detection, financial reporting, and analytics. * Build alignment and secure commitment from senior leadership and cross-functional partners across product, infrastructure, analytics, ML, privacy, security, and compliance on technical priorities and tradeoffs. * Serve as the primary technical voice for Data Platform in org-wide forums including OKR planning, architecture reviews, and long-term infrastructure strategy, while elevating senior engineering talent. Required Skills and Experience: * 12+ years building and operating large-scale distributed data infrastructure, including streaming platforms, data lakes, batch and real-time processing engines, and query/serving layers. * Record of owning end-to-end technical strategy and architecture for an entire data domain across multiple teams, with demonstrated success transitioning organizations from managed-service dependency toward platform-grade, engineering-built infrastructure. * Deep systems thinking across the full data lifecycle, with ability to reason about performance, reliability, cost, security, and privacy at each layer. * Demonstrated experience designing data systems that support ML training pipelines, feature stores, real-time inference, or AI agent workloads at scale, with familiarity across technologies such as CDC, Kafka, Databricks, Snowflake. * Platform mindset and product-manager orientation toward data infrastructure, focused on reducing friction for developer customers and creating compounding leverage. * Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality. As a Senior Software Engineer on the AI Platform team within the Platform group, you'll build and operate the LLM and agent infrastructure that every team at Coinbase depends on. This team owns the company's single path to large language models and the full agent lifecycle: build, deploy, run, observe, and improve. You'll lead multi-quarter technical initiatives across the platform, from gateway and runtime systems to knowledge bases and applied AI agents, directly shaping how Coinbase scales AI across the organization. What you'll do: * Own the architecture and delivery of core platform systems including the LLM Gateway (60+ models, auth, PII redaction, fallbacks, cost optimization), AI Hub, and agent runtime with microVM sandboxes and governed MCP gateway * Drive the design and implementation of Knowledge Base infrastructure, connecting data sources to auto-provisioned vector and markdown stores queryable by any agent * Lead AI FinOps capabilities including spend attribution, governance, and cost optimization across all AI workloads company-wide * Partner across engineering, security, legal, finance, product, and external partners at frontier labs and major cloud providers to ship high-impact platform capabilities * Build evaluation and observability tooling including LLM-as-judge harnesses, full tracing, and feedback loops that let subject matter experts refine production agents * Shape applied AI strategy by embedding with teams to build production agents, applying fine-tuning and traditional ML where it outperforms prompting Required Skills and Experience: * 5+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated expertise building ML/AI infrastructure, LLM systems, or distributed platform services at scale * Demonstrated ability to lead multi-quarter initiatives end-to-end, from technical design through production operation, with measurable platform-wide impact * Deep expertise in LLM orchestration patterns, agent frameworks, vector databases, and model serving infrastructure across multiple providers * Proven track record of cross-functional partnership with security, legal, and product teams to ship governed, production-grade AI systems * Fluency in Python and at least one systems language (Go, Rust, or C++), with production experience building APIs, microservices, and runtime environments * Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality. What you'll do: * Own the design, build, and operation of Kubernetes cluster management tooling and automation that keeps our compute platform reliable and self-healing at scale. * Build developer-facing tooling and workflows that improve how engineers across Coinbase interact with Kubernetes, with a heavy emphasis on integrating AI-driven processes and support. * Deliver net-new compute capabilities for service owners, such as one-off jobs, cron scheduling, deployment strategies, EFS support, and automated right-sizing. * Drive operational excellence by automating toil, reducing on-call burden, and continuously improving platform observability and incident response. * Partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams to ensure the compute platform meets Coinbase's standards for security, uptime, and performance.
