We are looking for a Forward Deployed Engineer who wants to work closely with our most strategic customers and play a key role in shaping the future of education technology. This role is based out of our Stockholm or Växjö office, with regular collaboration across teams and customers. About the role This is not a traditional developer role. You will act as an extension of our customers’ technical teams, working closely with municipalities and public sector organizations. The role combines deep technical expertise with strong business understanding and offers high autonomy from idea to delivery. You will operate in a flexible environment, partly outside our standard product lifecycle, enabling fast, agile deliveries with immediate impact. Key responsibilities: Take full ownership from discovery phase and requirements analysis through to delivery. Act as an extension of the customer’s technical team, participating in technical forums and meetings Work hands-on with data extraction, cloud integrations, APIs, and modern data platforms Navigate IST’s data landscape, including shared services and product-specific databases Act as the bridge between customers and IST’s product organization Collaborate closely with Product Owners and internal experts to ensure fast, effective delivery Identify scalable patterns and contribute to strengthening IST’s EduCloud and data platform Role qualifications We believe you have the following competence profile to succeed in this role: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent experience Strong experience in: Data extraction and data integration Cloud environments API integrations Modern data platforms Ability to quickly understand and navigate complex systems Comfortable working close to customers and owning end-to-end delivery Consulting background is a plus Ability to combine deep technical expertise with business understanding Confident and credible in customer-facing situations Strong communicator, fluent in Swedish and English Experience in the education or public sector is a plus Thrives in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same About IST At IST, the buyer and the end user are often structurally separated. The role sits at the intersection of DevOps, Infrastructure, Systems Engineering, and customer-facing engineering. You act as a key technical bridge between complex customer Kubernetes/OpenShift environments and internal R&D teams. A central part of the role is taking a holistic, end-to-end systems perspective — tying together infrastructure, platform, deployment, and operations so everything works reliably in mission-critical scenarios. You will design, deploy, and operate solutions, support customer onboarding, troubleshoot complex systems, and contribute directly to product development based on real customer feedback. The workload can be intense during onboarding phases, but the impact and learning opportunities are significant. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Design, deploy, and operate containerized applications in Kubernetes / OpenShift Own production environments with focus on availability, performance, and security Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical investigations Act as technical integrator across infrastructure, platform, and application layers Collaborate with customers on architecture and high-level design Work closely with R&D teams and contribute to product development Create and maintain technical documentation YOUR PROFILE You enjoy working in complex environments and assembling many moving parts into stable, scalable systems.
