The role:  As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, you will lead multi-team initiatives, leveraging your deep technical expertise to ensure alignment, quality, and long-term maintainability across the organization. You will balance hands-on technical guidance with strategic leadership, establishing engineering best practices that transcend your immediate team. By mentoring experienced engineers and building strong relationships with cross-functional stakeholders, you will drive project delivery and ensure our backend infrastructure remains scalable and robust enough to support millions of users worldwide What you will do * Lead the team to ensure we build our product efficiently and effectively. * Influence product priorities and scope, offering valuable input in decision-making. * Communicate complex decisions clearly, weighing the pros and cons of different solutions. * Mentor and guide experienced engineers, helping them develop both technically and culturally. * Leverage your experience to establish best practices across the engineering team and beyond. * Drive project delivery by aligning with cross-functional stakeholders and ensuring the team has everything needed. * Lead multi-team initiatives, contributing with technical expertise, ensuring alignment and quality. * Own the quality of the systems and services the team is responsible for. * Be hands-on, balancing strategic leadership with technical guidance to support the team. * Stay up-to-date with industry trends and technologies, ensuring the team works with the best tools available. * Build strong relationships and align efforts within the team and with external partners when necessary. * Help with recruitment by interviewing candidates What you bring in * Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent  * 8+ years of relevant experience with Scala, Java, or Go  * Experience of working with scalable, highly available, real-time distributed systems * Experience of working with relational and non-relational databases * Good understanding of data structures and algorithms * Mentoring, leadership skills * Excellent communication skills in English. * Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. * Experience with security best practices. It would be great if you also have: * Experience as a data engineer or close collaboration with data engineers. * Experience working with highly available systems. * Experience with performance tuning. * Experience with security hardening. * Experience with GDPR. * Experience creating tech strategies. The role: As a Senior ML Engineer, you will be working hands-on to optimise the training and deployment of ML models to be quick and cost-efficient. You will also be at the forefront of putting our ML models on mobile devices to enhance data privacy and customer experience. To achieve this, you will need to collaborate with teams across Truecaller to establish best practices and tools for efficient ML model development and deployment, particularly on mobile platforms. You will be expected to help Truecaller reach and remain at the cutting edge of ML training and deployment, and to explore new frontiers such as federated learning. What you will do * Understand the current and future needs of developers and the organisation, and create a roadmap with your manager for meeting those needs. * Work with teams across Truecaller, enabling them to deploy models to production quickly and cost-effectively. * Work hands-on with teams throughout Truecaller to optimise ML models for mobile devices. * Be the go-to expert for developing models for mobile devices as well as deploying them. * Staying up to date with the latest trends and technologies in ML Engineering, especially ML on mobile phones, and driving continuous innovation throughout Truecaller. What you bring in * Degree in computer science or equivalent * 5+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, with a focus on deploying ML models in production environments. * A strong understanding and experience to optimise feature engineering, model training, and model deployment. * Hands-on experience deploying ML models on mobile devices (e.g., TensorFlow Lite, Core ML, ONNX Runtime Mobile). * Strong understanding of machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, ONNX) and their deployment on mobile platforms. * Understanding of both Android and iOS development and how that impacts ML model deployment and usage. * Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across different teams and disciplines. * A customer-focused mindset. * Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English.
