Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities HEIMDAL is a multiscale diffractometer that, in its full scope, will enable studies of functional materials across a wide range of length scales, from conventional powder diffraction to the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) regime (possible future upgrade). The construction of the diffractometer part of the instrument is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2027. The immediate mission is to finalize the installation of the instrument and take part in the commissioning of the instrument without and with neutrons. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. The successful candidate must be active in a scientific field of direct relevance to HEIMDAL. Essential qualifications and experience: PhD in experimental studies in the physical sciences relevant to the HEIMDAL scientific programme, preferably in energy or nanoscaled materials. Practical experience in neutron powder diffraction Working knowledge of the data analysis for diffraction software GSAS-II, TOPAS, FullProf, Jana2006, PDFgui Evidence of an independent research profile in relevant science areas supported by a publication record Ability to work collaboratively and individually Good interpersonal communication and presentation skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and users at all levels. About the role: As ESS gets closer to its steady-state operations phase, we're looking for an Electronics Technician to join our Radio Frequency (RF) Group. The RF Group is part of the Accelerator division at ESS, and is responsible for defining, designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining the complex systems and amplifiers required for the operation of our particle accelerator. We are looking for a technician to assist with testing, operation and maintenance of high-powered amplifiers, power supplies and electronics. You will be working closely with, and assisting other members of, the RF group - as well as having your own short- and longer-term assignments. While much of the work is of an electronics and RF nature, we’re looking for a versatile technician who wants to learn new skills to take on a variety of tasks. Day-to-day, you will: Assist with electrical and mechanical installation of the RF systems including rack mounted components, cabling and assembly. Read, maintain and update electrical schematics and mechanical drawings. Carry out testing of components on delivery, following installation and when in operation. Follow established procedures and document findings. Work with RF, electronics and mechanical activities within your competence. Conduct system testing and fault finding. We are now looking for a Project Controls Manager to oversee the operational and development project scope at ESS. About the role: The Project Controls Manager (PCM) plays a critical role in ensuring the best use of the human and financial resources for the ESS organisation. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining the systems, processes, and governance needed to plan, monitor, and control organisational performance and the ESS programme. The role provides leadership across planning and scheduling, cost control, risk management, change control, and reporting to support informed decision-making and successful delivery. Working closely with project managers, technical leads, finance, procurement, operations, and other stakeholders, the PCM will have a central overview of both the operational and development project scope. This is a permanent role based at ESS campus in Lund, Sweden. Day-to-day, you will: Supervise a team managing cost control, planning, risk, change control and reporting functions. Lead the development, maintenance, and governance of integrated schedules using Primavera P6. This includes long term strategic planning, shutdown planning and development project planning. Establish baseline schedules, progress measurement methods, and schedule update routines to support accurate forecasting and performance tracking. Establish yearly budgets, cost reports, forecasts, and performance metrics. Monitor actual cost and commitments against budget and forecast, identifying trends, variances, and corrective actions. Manage project change control processes to ensure that scope, schedule, cost, and risk impacts are properly assessed, approved, and recorded. Ensure alignment and consistency between planning, cost, risk, and reporting data across the project controls function. Collaborate with project managers, work package owners, finance, procurement, and contractors to maintain robust project controls. Contribute to continuous improvement of project controls standards, tools, templates, and governance. About you: University degree in engineering, science, project management, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience. Proven experience in project controls within large-scale technical, scientific, infrastructure, industrial, or engineering environments. Proven experience leading and supervising multidisciplinary teams across planning, cost control, risk, change control, and reporting functions. Experience establishing and managing project budgets, forecasts, cost reporting, and performance metrics. Solid understanding of project governance, risk management, change control, and project lifecycle management principles. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify trends, assess risks, and support decision-making. About the role Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions. The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams and academic user groups to establish specifications and priorities for new high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems. Provide operational sample environment support for the ESS instruments including on-call support. Provide expert experiment safety reviews for user proposals and carry out safety testing of user-supplied equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams, users, and sample environment groups at other large-scale facilities to further develop high temperature/gas handling/pressurized sample environment equipment and technologies. Participate in the setting-up, maintenance and operation of the sample environment workshops and facilities. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for around 3 years based at ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. About you You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems. Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. Experience with additional techniques including vacuum welding, brazing, wiring, light sheet metal work, and tube bending is also regarded as a merit, as are basic machining skills. Knowledge of control systems and programming would be an advantage, but not a requirement. You are accustomed to working with scientists as well as technicians to define and deliver projects and support operating equipment. You take as much pride in designing engineering solutions to meet scientific requirements as providing hands-on practical solutions to equipment problems, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. You are eager to learn new things, adapt quickly, and interested in contributing across a variety of tasks besides your core area of competence. Help operate one of Europe’s most advanced scientific facilities. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. ESS will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. About the role: We are looking to build up our team of Operators to join our Remote Handling (RH) Group. The RH Group plays a key role in operating, maintaining, and developing the equipment used for transferring and processing radioactive components and waste within the ESS Active Cells Facility (our environment for handling radioactive components safely) using specialised Cask Assemblies. You will work with highly specialised remote handling systems, heavy lifting equipment, Virtual Reality-supported operations, and complex electromechanical systems in a unique radioactive waste handling and maintenance environment. What you’ll do: Our highly specialised remote handling systems are designed for environments where direct human access is impossible. As a Remote Handling Operator, you will help commission, prepare, operate, maintain, and develop the equipment used for transferring and processing radioactive components and waste - both manually and remotely - in one of the world’s most demanding engineering environments. You will work with: Telemanipulators and haptic robotic systems. Remotely operated cranes and lifting systems. Remote cutting and machining equipment. Radioactive waste management using specialised transport containers for handling radioactive waste. Camera-guided and VR-supported operations. Various complex electromechanical systems. Remote handling tooling and inspection devices. Day to day, you will: Provide technical support in preparing work procedures and risk assessments. Support commissioning, testing, maintenance, and rebuilding activities. Operate and maintain specialist remote handling equipment. Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electromechanical systems. Work closely with engineers to improve equipment reliability and maintainability. Produce and update technical and maintenance documentation. Support workshop and fabrication activities where required. Contribute to safe operations within radiation-controlled environments. Support planning activities for large-scale lifting and maintenance operations. This is not a standard operator role. You will develop and operate systems designed for environments where direct human intervention is impossible. The work combines precision engineering, robotics, remote operations, maintenance strategy, heavy mechanical systems, and emerging technologies such as camera-guided and VR-supported operations. Bladins International School of Malmö (BISM) is an IB Continuum School located in central Malmö.
