Postdoctoral studies in Experimental Systems Neuroscience (scholarship) Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research? The Stagkourakis Lab is recruiting for a highly independent postdoctoral researcher that can integrate within our existing team pursuing systems neuroscience projects. We are currently seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral position in colorectal cancer (CRC) research. The project will explore the role of goblet cell-intrinsic mucosal defence systems in determining susceptibility to CRC. The candidate will join a newly established Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg (https://wcmtm.gu.se/). As part of this venture, Dr. George Birchenough has established his research group (https://www.birchenoughlab.org/) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Cell Biology at the University of Gothenburg. The group works towards a better understanding of how mucosal defence systems control our interactions with the environment, how those systems fail in disease and how they might be prophylactically or therapeutically targeted. The group is part of a large network of researchers at Gothenburg University, most importantly the Mucin Biology Groups cluster (http://www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/) that currently includes over 30 researchers working at the forefront of mucosal biology. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in multiple experimental methods that work within the cluster, as well as more widely with other local and national groups within the WCMTM network. Subject area Translational Mucosal Biology Subject area description Our mucosal surfaces are the interface between the environment and our tissues. Their physiological functions are critical, but necessitate constant exposure of living cells to a vast collection of microbial lifeforms that includes many opportunistic and obligate pathogens. As a result, our mucosa has evolved multiple defensive systems that allow them to endure in this environment, and failure of these systems is often linked to development of acute and chronic disease. Consequently, understanding the development and regulation of these systems is key to understanding the pathoaetiology of mucosal disease and how they can be prevented or treated. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent and lethal types of cancer, and is especially prevalent in nations with a high human development index, indicating that factors associated with a modern, Westernized lifestyle are linked to CRC development. Most cases of CRC result from spontaneous mutations rather than heritable oncogenic mutations, and dysregulated interactions between the intestinal microbiota and immune system are implicated in tumorigenesis. Goblet cell-intrinsic defence systems, such as the mucus layer and sentinel goblet cells normally control host-microbiota interactions, but we have recently found that these systems are highly susceptible to environmental alterations caused by exposure to a Western-style diet. Thus, disruption of goblet cell-dependent functions may have a causal relationship with CRC development. By combining data from pre-clinical mouse models with analysis of samples from healthy and CRC patients, we hope to develop a better understanding of how goblet cell functions contribute to CRC susceptibility and develop new approaches to prevent CRC development. Duties The successful candidate will be expected to work extensively with pre-clinical mouse models and human tissues acquired during routine surgery. The candidate will be encouraged and expected to conduct their experimental research in an independent manner and to make significant contributions to project planning. The candidate will also actively contribute to the local research environment at the Mucin Biology Groups and engage in interactions with collaborators and other groups belonging to the WCMTM network. If necessary, the candidate may also be asked to assist in the supervision of Masters or PhD students. The project will combine large-scale multi-omics integration with advanced machine learning, including artificial neural networks, to predict disease-relevant splice variants across cardiometabolic diseases. By leveraging extensive meta-cohort and perturbation datasets, the work aims to uncover isoform-level regulatory mechanisms and guide the development of next-generation RNA therapeutics with improved specificity and reduced off-target effects. Description Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is a technology that allows electric vehicles (EVs) to not only draw power from the grid for charging but also feed stored energy back to the grid, supporting energy balance, grid stability, and renewable integration. V2G promises valuable grid services, but the gap between theoretical control concepts and actual hardware performance is not fully explored. The main objective of this thesis is to experimentally evaluate a V2G system under realistic operating conditions. An advanced real-time simulation hardware platform will be employed in this thesis project, serving as both the control system and the digital model of the grid and vehicle-side systems. Such a platform represents an intermediate step between offline simulation and real vehicle operation. Execution Step 1 – Experimental setup * Set up and configure the real-time simulation hardware and software platform. * Operate the system to demonstrate stable bidirectional charging in the lab. * Perform experimental validation to confirm successful commissioning and reliable system operation. Step 2 – Experimental operation * Define and implement selected existing V2G bidirectional charging strategies. * Evaluate the performance of these strategies by analyzing how the system tracks applied charge/discharge power commands (steps, ramps, and realistic profiles). * Quantify system efficiency and losses, including round-trip efficiency, standby losses, and operational stability limits. Expected outcome The thesis will deliver a validated experimental setup along with quantitative evaluation of system capabilities and limitations. Context The Diffraction Group at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), has an immediate opening for a two-year postdoctoral position funded through the Spanish Scientific Member agreement. The project focuses on emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides exhibiting unconventional frustrated magnetic and quantum phases. The materials under study include non-collinear magnets, such as complex ferrites with chiral states of remarkable stability, and frustrated negative charge-transfer oxides with hidden symmetries. The aim is to advance the design, understanding, and control of emergent states in quantum materials with non-collinear magnetism and symmetry-protected properties of interest for magnetoelectric and spin-lattice-driven applications. The research relies primarily on neutron techniques, with emphasis on single-crystal neutron diffraction and the exploitation of polarized neutrons and polarization analysis. Complementary techniques based on resonant X-ray scattering (RMXS/RIXS) are also of interest. Based at ILL, the position offers the opportunity to interact with a diverse community of scientists across European neutron, synchrotron, and FEL sources, and to carry out research stays of varying duration in the two partner laboratories in Barcelona (ICMAB) and Madrid (UCM). Our current research focuses on the use CYP2C19 is a highly polymorphic enzyme involved in the metabolism of many drugs and endogenous lipids, making it one of the most clinically important pharmacogenes. Beyond drug metabolism, CYP2C19 regulates lipid pathways influencing vascular function, inflammation, cholesterol homeostasis, and broader metabolic processes. We will investigate why fetal CYP2C19 expression induces inflammation in the developing hippocampus, leading to neuronal degeneration in the adult dentate gyrus causing anxiety and depression in adult life identifying molecular pathways relevant for future antidepressant development. Reduced CYP2C19 function has been associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, suggesting broader roles in cardiovascular disease. Using advanced human liver spheroids and brain organoids, we will study CYP2C19 in lipid metabolism ini relation to cardiovascular risk, by identifying CYP2C19-dependent lipid pathways providing new insights into mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders and arteriosclerosis. About the position The Department of Aquatic Resources has an immediate opening for a permanent position as researcher in stock assessment and advice for fisheries management in a unit that includes stock assessment at the Institute of Marine Research. Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre Third-cycle subject area: Forest management Description of the doctoral project: Swedish society is debating the long-term capacity of even-aged conifer-dominated forestry to reliably produce biomass over the coming century, and simultaneously sustain the breadth of ecosystem services that society increasingly demands from forestlands. Alternative approaches to production forests, such as restoration of broadleaved forests are thus of growing interest. The increased use of such alternatives may enhance the overall resilience of Swedish forests to projected climate change, better balance the provision of forest ecosystem services, provide vital habitat for forest biodiversity, and thereby help ensure forest ecosystem services delivery over the coming century. The EU Nature restoration Regulation and Sweden's national environmental goals, provide official recognition of the urgent need to restore and improve the ecological condition of forest ecosystems across Europe. Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the regeneration and restoration of new mixed broadleaved dominated forests. About the position: We intend to contrast passive versus active pathways for restoring such diverse forests. To address such issues, we will use existing experiments, chronosequences, and survey-data for evaluating the effects from restoration on ecosystem services and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of international researchers. The research primarily deals with the relation between microstructure and properties, and how this relationship is influenced by processing and in-service degradation. Among the materials studied, steel, hard coatings, zirconium alloys and high entropy materials are central. The applications are often related to energy and sustainability. About the research project Nuclear fuel is enclosed in cladding tubes made from zirconium alloys. To improve reactor safety and economic performance, new alloys are continuously being developed. In this project, the corrosion behaviour of a novel zirconium alloy will be investigated to improve our understanding of the underlying corrosion mechanisms and support the development of next-generation materials. Advanced characterization techniques, including electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, will be used to study corrosion processes at the atomic scale. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering.
