About Us At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in. AVAILABLE LOCATIONS | AUSTIN, US ABOUT THE ROLE AI inference is becoming core infrastructure. Every serious application will need access to many models, across many providers, with reliability, observability, security, cost control, and routing built in from the start. AI Gateway is Cloudflare's bet that this layer should exist at the network edge: close to users, close to compute, and simple enough that a developer can adopt it with one API change. We are obsessively agent-pilled. We don't just build the product; we build the environment that builds the product: the agents, harnesses, skills, tools, and context that let a small team ship like a much larger one. We dogfood AI Gateway, Workers AI, and the broader Cloudflare agent stack relentlessly, and we expect you to as well. RESPONSIBILITIES * As the Engineering Manager for AI Gateway, you will lead a small, high-velocity team building that layer. This is a deeply hands-on role. You will be in the code, in the design docs, in customer conversations, and in the trenches with your team. We're looking for a generative builder who can move from half-formed idea to working prototype quickly, and bring a team along with that energy. * Set the technical and product direction for AI Gateway alongside engineers and PMs, then roll up your sleeves and help build it. * Build the software and the software that builds the software. Your team needs to build the context and toolchain that let agents help build, operate, monitor, and improve AI Gateway itself. * Inspire and energize a team shipping at the pace the AI ecosystem demands. Provider APIs change weekly, new models drop daily, and the gap between "good idea" and "in production" is measured in days, not quarters. * Obsess over developer experience. Every error message, SDK choice, dashboard flow, and line of docs matters. You should have strong taste about what makes developer tools feel great. * Recruit, mentor, and grow engineers. Build a small team that punches massively above its weight. * Partner closely with Workers AI, Agents, and the broader Developer Platform teams to deliver a unified inference layer that feels like one product DESIRABLE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE * A minimum of 8 years of relevant industry experience, including at least 4 years managing software engineering teams. * Proven track record leading teams that have shipped and operated complex, large-scale systems, preferably in AI infrastructure, developer platforms, cloud infrastructure, edge/proxy systems, or high-scale APIs. * Significant technical depth, with the ability to guide architectural discussions, make credible technical decisions, review designs, and unblock your team. * Strong developer tools taste. You have used and built enough APIs, SDKs, dashboards, CLIs, and internal platforms to know what makes them delightful or painful. * Demonstrated ability to hire, coach, and develop senior engineers, and to build high-performing, inclusive teams that ship. You care about teams and team culture. * A hands-on approach to leadership: you consider yourself a builder, stay close to the code, know the numbers, know the customer, and know what to build next. BONUS POINTS * Experience building AI/ML infrastructure, inference platforms, model gateways, or LLM-powered applications. * Experience building developer-facing APIs or SDKs at scale. * Hands-on experience with proxy, edge, or gateway systems. * You've built or heavily customized your own agentic dev environment: custom agents, harnesses, or tooling that changed how you ship. * Familiarity with the current AI ecosystem: providers, model capabilities, agent frameworks, and where the rough edges are. * A track record of writing publicly about developer tools or systems you've built. * You've built something with AI Gateway, Workers AI, or a competing product, and have opinions about what's missing. RDQ427R368 At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers — and customer obsessed — we leap at every opportunity to tackle technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started. The Configuration Platform team owns the systems that move configuration and feature flags across every Databricks service. The platform decouples code deployment from feature enablement for thousands of internal engineers, transports configuration across AWS, Azure, and GCP to every Databricks compute surface, and serves 25,000+ active flags and over 300 million evaluations per second at ~10μs p95 latency. It is the primary lever Databricks uses to safely roll out changes, run experiments, and mitigate incidents in minutes instead of hours. We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a team within the Configuration Platform organization. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines deep distributed systems judgment with strong people leadership, driving multi-quarter strategy on one of Databricks' most critical stability primitives while continuing to raise the bar for how engineers across the company ship change safely. The impact you will have: * You will lead a team that directly shapes how thousands of Databricks engineers ship, ramp, and roll back changes every day * You will reduce the rate and blast radius of customer-impacting incidents caused by configuration and feature changes, through stronger guardrails, validation, and graduated rollout patterns * You will close the loop between "bad change" and automated mitigation, driving company-wide MTTR down through investments in health-mediated releases, auto-rollback, and zero-downtime configuration delivery * You will evolve the Configuration Platform user experience into a frictionless, opinionated set of surfaces (UI, CLI, agentic) where engineers author, review, and roll out changes safely without thinking about the internals * You will grow the team into a Staff and Principal attracting org whose technical decisions shape how the company balances speed and reliability What we look for: * 5+ years managing backend, infrastructure, or platform teams of roughly 7 to 15 engineers, ideally in service frameworks, feature flags, configuration systems, release safety, production reliability, or other internal platforms * Strong distributed systems and infrastructure background: Java/Scala services, RPC and routing layers, configuration systems, Kubernetes-based microservices, and multi-cloud or multi-region deployments * Hands-on EM disposition: stays close to the code, leads design reviews, and contributes technically alongside the team. Comfortable leveraging AI-assisted coding tools to amplify their own and the team's output * Demonstrated track record managing, growing, and retaining high performing teams * Comfortable partnering with senior+ engineers on design reviews, roadmap, and cross-team execution while letting strong ICs own technical details * Operational experience owning a high-availability platform with on-call, incident response, and measurable reliability improvements * Demonstrated product thinking for developers: shaping opinionated UX, rollout policies, and developer workflows that make the safe path the easy path, with strong taste on the safety versus velocity tradeoff * BS in Computer Science (Masters or higher level of education preferred) COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement As a federal government contractor, Databricks requires new U.S. employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be required as a condition of employment. Databricks will make reasonable accommodations based on medical conditions or religious grounds for qualified candidates in accordance with applicable law. Our engineering teams build highly technical products that fulfill real, important needs in the world. We constantly push the boundaries of data and AI technology, while simultaneously operating with the resilience, security and scale that is critical to making customers successful on our platform. We develop and operate one of the largest scale software platforms. The fleet consists of millions of virtual machines, generating terabytes of logs and processing exabytes of data per day. At our scale, we regularly observe cloud hardware, network, and operating system faults, and our software must gracefully shield our customers from any of the above. Modern data analysis employs sophisticated methods such as machine learning that go well beyond the roll-up and drill-down capabilities of traditional SQL query engines. As a software engineer on the Runtime team at Databricks, you will be building the next generation distributed data storage and processing systems that can outperform specialized SQL query engines in relational query performance, yet provide the expressiveness and programming abstractions to support diverse workloads ranging from ETL to data science. Below are some example projects: Apache Spark™: Develop the de facto open source standard framework for big data. Data Plane Storage: Deliver reliable and high performance services and client libraries for storing and accessing humongous amount of data on cloud storage backends, e.g., AWS S3, Azure Blob Store. Delta Lake: A storage management system that combines the scale and cost-efficiency of data lakes, the performance and reliability of a data warehouse, and the low latency of streaming. Its higher level abstractions and guarantees, including ACID transactions and time travel, drastically simplify the complexity of real-world data engineering architecture. Delta Pipelines: It's difficult to manage even a single data engineering pipeline. The goal of the Delta Pipelines project is to make it simple and possible to orchestrate and operate tens of thousands of data pipelines. It provides a higher level abstraction for expressing data pipelines and enables customers to deploy, test & upgrade pipelines and eliminate operational burdens for managing and building high quality data pipelines. Performance Engineering: Build the next generation query optimizer and execution engine that's fast, tuning free, scalable, and robust. What we look for: * BS in Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent practical experience. * Optional: MS or PhD in databases, distributed systems. * Comfortable working towards a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables. * Driven by delivering customer value and impact. * 8+ years of production level experience in either Java, Scala or C++. * Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures and their real-world use cases. * Experience with distributed systems, databases, and big data systems (Apache Spark™, Hadoop).
