SUBJECT DESCRIPTION Engineering materials includes the composition, structure, properties and production of materials, mainly metallic and ceramic materials, as well as aspects of their use. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The PhD student will focus on the development of structured sorbent systems and additive manufacturing approaches for industrial NOx and SOx capture applications. The work will include formulation of printable sorbent inks and pastes with controlled rheological properties, integration of functional nanoparticles for induction-assisted regeneration, and fabrication of structured adsorbent geometries using advanced manufacturing techniques. The student will investigate how structural design, porosity, and mass-transfer properties influence adsorption performance, pressure drop, thermal management, and cyclic stability under humid process conditions. The project will further involve scale-up, process integration, and evaluation of structured sorbents in pilot-scale systems relevant to acid-plant and greenhouse CHP gas streams. The project is approved for funding in EIC Pathfinder challenges from waste to value creation. TASKS Working as a researcher involves defining your daily tasks and how they will be carried out. You will act and train as a project manager, combined with your development. Involvement with other projects and teaching will occur up to 20 percent of your time. Project description The project Streetwise aims to improve coordination between street works and water/wastewater pipe network renewal in Swedish municipalities. Today, these investments are often planned and financed separately or coordinated based on limited data leading to repeated excavation, higher lifecycle costs, and unnecessary disruption for citizens. Skellefteå municipality is the needs owner and participates through the departments of Water & Wastewater and the Streets, providing a real test bed. Recent research will be the starting point where an existing model will be developed further to optimise the strategic asset management and coordination based on economic, environmental and other societal criteria. You will belong to a research team with researchers from our university as well as external researchers from the research institute RISE which are experts in policy-lab methodology. The work within the project includes development of an existing Python model and collection of asset management data of municipal infrastructure. Together with other researchers in the team, you will design workshops to be carried out with municipal partners to understand the present routines of coordinating asset management of multiutility infrastructures and be able to develop tools to support their work. Duties As a PhD student, you will collect asset management data, develop a Python model and be involved in workshops. You will learn how to collect and analyse scientific data within your research area as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies, including both research and mandatory and elective course work. In addition, you will also carry out departmental duties, such as teaching and/or assisting in other research projects. About us The research at the Division of Microstructure Physics focuses on experimental investigations of engineering materials using advanced characterization techniques. We mainly use electron microscopy, atom probe tomography (APT) and large scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron scattering). The research primarily deals with the relation between microstructure and properties, and how this relationship is influenced by processing and in-service degradation. Among the materials studied, steel, hard coatings, zirconium alloys and high entropy materials are central. The applications are often related to energy and sustainability. About the research project Nuclear fuel is enclosed in cladding tubes made from zirconium alloys. To improve reactor safety and economic performance, new alloys are continuously being developed. By coating lignin onto silicon carbide (SiC) substrates and applying rapid microwave heating, the project seeks to significantly reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with conventional graphite production. As graphite is a critical raw material for lithium-ion batteries and is currently sourced largely from fossil-based or non-European supply chains, GreenWave 2 contributes to increased resource security, industrial resilience, and climate neutrality. The project also evaluates the performance of the produced graphite in battery applications while assessing techno-economic feasibility and environmental sustainability, supporting the development of a competitive and sustainable graphite industry within Europe. The work will include mapping material and energy flows, collecting process data from laboratory and pilot-scale experiments, and evaluating the environmental impacts of the technology. The developed model will be used to identify key environmental hotspots and compare the sustainability performance of bio-based graphite production with conventional fossil-based and mined graphite supply chains. Department of Crop Production Ecology Biology with a specialisation in ecology - The Department of Crop Production Ecology is seeking a PhD student in plant breeding and plant protection against insect pests. Description: Chemical insecticides have been an important tool for limiting crop losses caused by insect pests and insect-borne viruses, but their availability has declined sharply in recent years. Crop varieties with resistance, tolerance or other traits that enable them to avoid insect damage and viruses spread by insects will therefore be a cornerstone of future integrated pest management. The vision for the new project 'Node for Plant Breeding against Insect Pests and Viruses' within the centre SLU Grogrund is to reduce crop losses caused by pests and insect-borne viruses through crop breeding. The project focuses on insect pests and viruses in wheat, field beans, peas and sugar beet and is a collaboration between five departments at SLU and three plant breeding companies. Project description The doctoral student will be part of the research project COAST PFAS – Coastal PFAS Transition Lab for Source Control, Substitution and Governance, a transdisciplinary initiative addressing the spread of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from urban and industrial sources to coastal environments. The project combines environmental analytical chemistry, wastewater and stormwater research, process understanding, and systems perspectives to support preventive and sustainable PFAS management. The PhD project is connected to the work package PFAS flows from land to sea, which focuses on identifying, mapping, and quantifying PFAS sources and transport pathways in urban water systems and coastal environments. The research will include targeted and non-targeted PFAS analysis in wastewater, stormwater, industrial effluents, and receiving waters. The research will also include the development of sector-specific PFAS fingerprints and mass-balance approaches. The doctoral student will work with advanced analytical methods including LC-MS/MS, combustion ion chromatography, extractable organofluorine (EOF), oxidation methods for PFAS precursors, and high-resolution mass spectrometry for suspect and non-target screening. The work also includes interpretation of large analytical datasets and integration of results into source-tracking and fate-assessment frameworks. The project is conducted in close collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Chalmers University of Technology, Örebro University, VA SYD, and Malmö City. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the Division of Supply and Operations Management at the Department of Technology Management and Economics, Chalmers University of Technology. Digitalization, circularity and resilience are important drivers and enablers. Our goal is to perform high quality research and education at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. About the research project Over the past decade, several events have caused major disruptions to global transport and supply chains. The research project, in which the PhD student will be working, focuses on how resilient transport solutions are developed within business networks and on the importance of managing tensions in this context. The project aims to examine, through case studies, the opportunities and obstacles shaping the development of resilient supply chains in a turbulent geopolitical environment. The theoretical frameworks and analysis will be guided by the 'industrial network approach', emphasizing buyer-supplier relationships and networks. The project will involve three sub-studies focusing on different industrial applications: (1) fashion products, (2) advanced transport solutions, and (3) logistics, transport, and distribution services. By analyzing changes in supplier relationships and supply chains of the sub-studies, the objective is to advance knowledge of resilience in business networks and transport systems. In turn, the project is to contribute to the development and transformation of transport networks and create value for both industry and policy actors. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Transport Management, or equivalent, with a total of at least 240 higher education credits. Background Autonomous vehicles rely on AI models trained on large-scale, multi-modal sensor data. As vehicle platforms evolve, changes in sensors and hardware often require updating or retraining these models, which is costly and time-consuming. A key challenge is therefore how to efficiently transfer knowledge between models operating under different configurations. This thesis is part of the research project DREAM – Distributed, Robust and Efficient AI for Autonomous Vehicles. The topic is highly relevant for enabling scalable and efficient AI development in next-generation autonomous driving systems. Description Sensor data and AI enable cars to detect objects, understand their environment and make decisions about how to respond. When vehicles are updated and new models are developed, sensors and hardware often change, which in turn also affects the AI models used. One approach would be to create a new AI model from scratch and collect new data each time the vehicle platform is updated. A more efficient solution would be to transfer knowledge between models with varying architectures. In this Master’s thesis project, we aim to investigate knowledge transfer between diverse models and hardware setups, ensuring that learning can continue even when architectures change. The work will use the Zenseact Open Dataset and also explore knowledge transfer in a federated learning context. Background and project description Autonomous vehicles generate massive amounts of multi-modal sensor data, including camera images, lidar point clouds, radar measurements, GPS information, and vehicle control signals. These heterogeneous data sources provide complementary information that is essential for robust perception, localization, and decision-making. However, transferring such large volumes of data to centralized servers is often impractical due to bandwidth limitations, storage costs, privacy concerns, and regulatory constraints. Federated Learning (FL) offers a distributed and privacy-preserving framework that enables multiple vehicles, fleets, or organizations to collaboratively train machine learning models without sharing their raw data. While FL has shown significant promise for autonomous driving applications, its effectiveness is often limited by the availability of high-quality labeled data. Deep learning-based perception modules require high-quality annotations, which are costly and complex to obtain. Self-supervised learning (SSL) offers a solution by leveraging mostly unlabeled data with minimal labels. Early studies show that federated self-supervised training can achieve performance comparable to centralized approaches, with potential improvements as larger unlabeled datasets are used. This thesis project aims to advance federated learning for autonomous vehicles by integrating self-supervised methods with robust aggregation techniques to develop models that are efficient, generalizable, and capable of handling both common and rare driving scenarios, while reducing reliance on manual annotation and avoiding the costs of central data storage. The thesis is part of the research project DREAM – Distributed, Robust and Efficient AI for Autonomous Vehicles. About the research project Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) convert the chemical energy in hydrogen to electrical energy. The main parts of a PEMFC are the anode, cathode and electrolyte. The reactions at the anode and cathode electrodes are catalyzed by metal nanoparticles on carbon. A current issue for large scale implementation of the PEMFC technology is long-term stability. The project will use atomistic first principles methods to understand the governing mechanism for fuel cell degradation. Increased understanding of the governing processes will provide information on how catalysts could be improved and how the system should be operated to minimize degradation. The project is a collaboration between Volvo Technology AB and Chemical Physics at Chalmers.
