Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre Third-cycle subject area: Forest management Description of the doctoral project: Swedish society is debating the long-term capacity of even-aged conifer-dominated forestry to reliably produce biomass over the coming century, and simultaneously sustain the breadth of ecosystem services that society increasingly demands from forestlands. Alternative approaches to production forests, such as restoration of broadleaved forests are thus of growing interest. The increased use of such alternatives may enhance the overall resilience of Swedish forests to projected climate change, better balance the provision of forest ecosystem services, provide vital habitat for forest biodiversity, and thereby help ensure forest ecosystem services delivery over the coming century. The EU Nature restoration Regulation and Sweden's national environmental goals, provide official recognition of the urgent need to restore and improve the ecological condition of forest ecosystems across Europe. Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the regeneration and restoration of new mixed broadleaved dominated forests. About the position: We intend to contrast passive versus active pathways for restoring such diverse forests. To address such issues, we will use existing experiments, chronosequences, and survey-data for evaluating the effects from restoration on ecosystem services and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of international researchers. We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will address these challenges, but we welcome those who bring specific research interests which can shape the ultimate direction of the PhD. Requirements: To meet the general entry requirements you must have been awarded a second-cycle (Master's) qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Chapter 7, Section 39). You must also meet the equivalent English language requirements as those necessary for the Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6. Your profile: The applicant should by the date of admission to PhD studies have a Master's degree in forest science, biology, ecology or equivalent. You should have a strong interest in forest ecosystems and an interest in working with large data sets. A driver's license is a necessity for work duties. Beneficial qualifications are research experience in forestry, ecology, and similar subjects. Experience in field-based forest research, transdisciplinary studies and ecosystem service assessments are also beneficial qualifications. Focus is given to your analytical and problem-solving abilities and your ability to work independently. Beneficial qualifications include the demonstrated capacity to express yourself in English, both orally and in writing. For the full version of the advertisement, see Environmentally safe maintenance operations of urban drainage infrastructures Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a natural part of the work? With us, you will collaborate with dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy strong opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed postdoc with a focus on how sustainable management of stormwater sediments can contribute to improved water quality. Take the opportunity to join one of the leading stormwater research groups in the world with an international, creative and dynamic environment and close cooperation with the industry and universities worldwide. The group consists of about 50 members including senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. Subject description Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public’s health and safety. Project description Stormwater carries a variety of pollutants from urban environments, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban drainage infrastructures such as gully pots and stormwater ponds are critical to mitigate these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediments and associated contaminants in these infrastructures lead to an impaired performance and thus requiring routine and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban drainage infrastructures expands, the mass of sediments and associated contaminants retained in such infrastructure will continue to grow, amplifying both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterising these challenges within a wider technical and socio-economic context is essential to ensure that the accumulation of sediments prevents–rather than simply defers– their discharge to coastal environments. Addressing this need is the central aim of this project, responding directly to the needs of municipalities, authorities and practitioners for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally responsible maintenance methods and sustainable financial models, and contributes to reducing land-based pressures on coastal and marine environments through system-level transformation. The work within the project includes the evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures as well as detailed characterisation of the waste streams generated from maintenance operations. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoc you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. The research work for this project will specifically include experimental work. Data-driven understanding & predictive modelling of sediment accumulation in urban drainage infrastructures Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a natural part of the work? With us, you will collaborate with dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy strong opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed postdoc with a focus on data-driven monitoring and predictive modelling of sediment accumulation in urban drainage infrastructures to support evidence-based maintenance that contributes to improved water quality and enhanced urban resilience to flooding. The group's overall goal is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems. Project description Stormwater transports a wide range of pollutants from urban environments to receiving waters, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters and coastal ecosystems. Urban drainage infrastructures, such as gully pots and stormwater ponds, play a critical role by retaining sediments and associated contaminants. However, their performance depends on effective operation and maintenance (O&M), which in practice is often reactive or based on fixed schedules, despite large spatial and temporal variability in sediment accumulation. This PhD project is part of a larger interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to enable a transition towards more data-driven and environmentally responsible maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures. The research work will focus on developing a data-driven understanding of sediment accumulation processes in urban drainage infrastructures. This includes long-term monitoring using high-resolution sensors to capture sediment dynamics across rainfall events and seasons. Based on these data, predictive models will be developed to estimate sediment accumulation and infra-structure’s remaining functionality. The results will support more effective maintenance strategies by identifying when and where maintenances are needed to maximise environmental performance and operational efficiency. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoctoral researcher you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses, and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. The research work for this project will specifically include field sampling work. Qualifications In order to be eligible for employment as postdoc you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in in the field of water and environment, natural resources engineering, civil engineering or environmental chemistry.
