What will gasoline look like in a future shaped by increasingly ambitious sustainability requirements? The transportation sector is undergoing a major transformation, creating a need for new fuel solutions that combine high performance, reduced climate impact, and compliance with future regulations. One of the key challenges is increasing the share of renewable components in gasoline without compromising quality, stability, or functionality. As a thesis student at VAROPreem, you will have the opportunity to contribute to this development by investigating the potential of a gasoline blend containing up to 20 vol% ethanol and 80 vol% hydrocarbons. By combining literature studies, laboratory experiments, and data analysis, you will explore how different hydrocarbon compositions influence fuel properties and the ability to meet future quality requirements. This is a unique opportunity for students in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related disciplines who are interested in working on a real industrial challenge at the intersection of organic chemistry, fuel technology, and mathematical modelling. The results may contribute to the development of future gasoline products for the European market and support Europe's transition towards more sustainable transportation in line with the Fit for 55 initiative. Field of study/Subject Gasoline sold on the Swedish and European markets must comply with both national legislation and European fuel standards. Increasing the ethanol content in gasoline can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it also introduces significant technical challenges. Ethanol affects several key fuel properties, including vapour pressure, energy content, distillation characteristics, and material compatibility. One particularly important question is how higher ethanol concentrations influence gasoline vapour pressure and how these changes affect vehicle start-up and driving performance under different climate conditions. At the same time, the fuel must continue to meet octane rating requirements. Although ethanol has excellent octane-boosting properties, increasing the ethanol content changes the need for different hydrocarbon components in the gasoline blend. Developing a future E20 gasoline therefore requires a deep understanding of the interplay between ethanol, hydrocarbons, vapour pressure, and octane number, as well as how refinery blending components can be optimized to meet future specification requirements. Purpose The purpose of this thesis project is to increase knowledge of how a future E20 gasoline can be formulated and produced to meet quality, performance, and sustainability requirements. The results will support VAROPreem's long-term development of future gasoline products for the European market. By improving our understanding of the relationship between ethanol content, hydrocarbon composition, vapour pressure, and octane number, the project can contribute to the development of fuels that combine high performance with a reduced climate impact. Thesis Goals The goals of the thesis are to: Conduct a literature review of previous research and experience related to gasoline with higher ethanol content. Identify the fuel properties that are critical for an E20 gasoline blend. Design and carry out laboratory experiments based on data and guidance provided by VAROPreem. Develop a proposal for an E20 gasoline specification with the potential to meet relevant quality and regulatory requirements. Identify blending and optimization strategies that could enable the introduction of a future E20 gasoline product. Scope 30 ECTS credits Location Gothenburg. Can a small contamination have major consequences for the sustainable fuels of the future? VAROPreem sources, stores, transports, produces, distributes, and markets renewable liquid fuels. Throughout the value chain, we work to ensure that our products comply with regulatory requirements and meet the highest quality standards. One of our most important renewable products is HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a paraffinic diesel fuel used as an alternative to conventional fossil diesel. Although HVO has been on the market for many years, there is still limited knowledge about how the fuel behaves throughout the supply chain and under different contamination scenarios. Field of study/Subject HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) plays a key role in the transition towards more sustainable transportation and is one of the most important renewable alternatives to fossil diesel. Maintaining product quality throughout the supply chain requires a solid understanding of how HVO behaves during storage, transportation, and distribution. In practice, HVO may come into contact with other fuels and petroleum products at various stages of the logistics chain. Even small amounts of contamination can influence fuel properties and product quality. As the share of renewable fuels continues to grow, understanding these interactions becomes increasingly important for ensuring both product performance and regulatory compliance. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to improve our understanding of the physical and chemical properties of HVO and investigate how the fuel is affected by contact with other fuels and petroleum products throughout the supply chain. The project aims to identify factors that influence product quality and increase understanding of potential risks associated with the storage, transportation, and distribution of HVO. Thesis Goals The goals of the thesis are to: Conduct a literature review of HVO's physical and chemical properties as well as previous research within the field. Identify and analyse quality-related risks associated with the handling, storage, and distribution of HVO. Investigate how HVO interacts with other fuels and petroleum products. Design and carry out laboratory experiments, where relevant, to study selected research questions. Compile conclusions and recommendations that can support quality assurance efforts across VAROPreem's value chain. Scope 30 ECTS credits Location Gothenburg. Are you interested in catalysis, renewable feedstocks, and the fuels of the future? In this master's thesis project, you will investigate how resin acids and sterols can be upgraded to reduce the aromatic content in HVO100 and contribute to the development of sustainable transportation fuels. Field of study/Subject VAROPreem currently produces renewable fuels from feedstocks such as fats, oils, and pyrolysis oil derived from biomass at its refineries in Gothenburg and Lysekil. These feedstocks contain a wide range of chemical compounds that must be converted to meet stringent requirements for product quality and performance. Among these compounds are resin acids and sterols, which are more complex molecules and often more challenging to process than other feedstock components. To enable increased utilization of renewable feedstocks while maintaining high product quality, new solutions are needed to efficiently convert these compounds. Successful upgrading of resin acids and sterols can help reduce the aromatic content of HVO100, improve fuel properties, and create more robust production processes for future renewable fuels. This thesis project focuses on investigating how these compounds can be selectively and resource-efficiently converted with minimal impact on other refinery processes. Purpose The purpose of this master's thesis is to investigate how resin acids and sterols can be converted into fuel components that meet the quality requirements for HVO100. The project focuses on identifying process conditions and catalyst solutions that enable efficient conversion of these more challenging feedstock components while maintaining a high conversion rate for other renewable feedstock constituents. The work will be carried out through laboratory-scale experiments in which renewable feedstocks are hydrotreated using both existing and modified catalysts. Feedstocks, products, and catalysts will be analyzed and characterized, and the results will be used to evaluate which conditions provide the best product quality and process performance. This project offers the opportunity to combine laboratory work with data analysis while contributing to the development of future renewable fuels. Thesis Goals The objective of this master's thesis is to identify catalyst and process solutions that enable efficient conversion of resin acids and sterols into components that meet HVO100 quality specifications. The results are expected to increase understanding of how these feedstock components can be utilized in existing production processes and thereby strengthen opportunities to expand the use of renewable feedstocks in future fuel production. Field of study/Subject As the demand for sustainable fuels continues to grow, efficient utilization of feedstocks is becoming increasingly important. In refinery and terminal operations, different products are transported through shared pipelines and storage systems, where they come into contact and mix at product interfaces. The formation and behaviour of these mixing zones can affect product quality, product losses, and overall operational efficiency. By simulating and visualizing flow behaviour in complex transport systems, it is possible to improve our understanding of how products interact and identify opportunities for optimization throughout the value chain. Purpose This thesis explores how simulation models can be used to visualize and better understand mixing phenomena in fuel transport systems. The project will investigate how factors such as injection rates and product properties influence mixing interfaces and how these effects can be represented visually within a complex flow system. The overall aim is to improve understanding of the physical mechanisms governing product mixing and to evaluate how this knowledge can support optimization of refinery and terminal operations. Thesis Goals The goals of the thesis are to: Conduct a literature review of previous research and industrial applications related to mixing phenomena and flow simulations.
