A HIL framework developer designs, implements, and maintains Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing systems and their underlying frameworks to validate embedded software and hardware for complex products, particularly in the automotive industry. Key responsibilities include developing automated HIL test environments using tools like dSPACE or NI Veristand, creating and executing test cases, analyzing results, integrating software and hardware models, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines. This role requires strong MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, and Python skills, knowledge of test automation, and a deep understanding of embedded systems and functional safety.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain the architecture of HIL test systems and the software frameworks that run them.
Implement automated tests within the HIL environment to improve efficiency and enable continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD).
Integrate real-time physical models and software models (eg, with MATLAB/Simulink) into the HIL environment.
Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run. To support this ambitious goal, we are seeking a Senior Test Application HW/SW Developer to join our Electrical Functional Test Team in Munich. You will be responsible for the design, implementation, and integration of automated test software applications used to validate electronics at various levels — from individual boards to full subsystems — across our verification and validation campaigns. You will play a key role in shaping the test automation framework used on our Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) platforms, working in close collaboration with electrical, avionics, and system engineers. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES In your role as Senior Test Application HW/SW Developer , you will: * Design, develop, and maintain test automation software for board-level, equipment-level, and subsystem-level testing * Define and implement hardware and software architectures tailored to specific test scenarios and HiL environments * Develop LabVIEW-based applications, for both desktop and real-time platforms (e.g., PXI, cRIO) * Integrate and configure NI VeriStand as part of real-time test setups * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software into functional test platforms * Support test execution, data acquisition, logging, and automated reporting * Create and maintain technical documentation, including architecture specifications, code documentation, and user guides * Provide support for debugging, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of test platforms YOU AND YOUR TEAM WILL BE IN CHARGE OF: * Developing a robust and scalable test software framework supporting reuse and modularity across projects * Implementing real-time data handling and I/O configuration through NI hardware and LabVIEW RT * Defining test automation workflows using NI TestStand and integrating them into the system test process * Coordinating closely with electrical and system engineers to ensure requirements traceability and test coverage * Contributing to the continuous evolution of our HiL infrastructure, with an emphasis on performance, reliability, and maintainability * Ensuring all solutions meet space-grade quality and safety standards, aligned with project requirements MUST-HAVE SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field * Proficiency in LabVIEW, including desktop and real-time application development * Hands-on experience with NI VeriStand in real-time test environments * Familiarity with NI TestStand for test automation and execution management * Solid understanding of test platform architectures, hardware/software integration, and real-time systems * Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, with a structured and methodical approach * Experience working with LabVIEW FPGA is appreciated * Ability to write and integrate Python scripts to extend test workflows or support automation tasks * Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills * Proven ability to collaborate across disciplines, drive initiatives, and deliver in a high-paced environment Why you should join us!
