As a Product Manager in our Product Development team, you will play a key role in pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible — working hands-on with cutting-edge processes while driving complex development projects forward. The Team You will join our Product Development team of around 40 colleagues, including Product Managers, Process Design Engineers and CAD Engineers, and you’ll be reporting to a Group Manager. The team works at the core of Silex’s offering — translating customer designs into manufacturable MEMS products. The role In this role, you will lead the development of MEMS products from early concept through prototype, combining technical depth with structured project management. As a Production Engineer (Pilot Production) you will stabilize, scale, and continuously improve pilot‑line processes that span electrode manufacturing, cell assembly, and formation & aging. Your mission is to translate cell designs and lab recipes into robust, traceable processes ready for industrialization at Northvolt gigafactories. You will work closely together with production, process, quality, and automation engineers to make sure the production process is achieving the required stability and is ready for transfer to gigafactory scale. You will ensure process and equipment meet availability and reliability and resolve production issues with a sense of urgency. Role Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Senior R&D Engineer (Electromagnetic Propulsion) to lead the physical modelling, simulation, and experimental validation of a next-generation, multistage Electromagnetic Launch System. In this role, you will bridge the gap between advanced physics theory and cutting-edge engineering. You will be responsible for defining the mathematical framework of inductance acceleration, optimizing pulsed-power efficiency, managing extreme thermal/mechanical stresses, and building physical prototypes to validate your models. Physics Modelling & Electromagnetic Analysis Develop the fundamental mathematical frameworks and multi-physics models (electromagnetic, thermal, and material physics) to describe inductance acceleration and transient system behaviours. Investigate complex magnetic Lorentz forces, skin effects, and proximity effects acting on coils under high-frequency, time-varying currents. Utilize advanced simulation tools to analyse a large parameter space (coil geometry, shape, size, and turn count) to optimize magnetic field production and projectile acceleration. 2. Multistage System Architecture & Optimization Design and analyse multistage acceleration configurations, defining the optimal number of stages, mutual stage interactions, and microsecond-level activation timing architectures. Optimize the stored-to-kinetic energy conversion efficiency by minimizing un-utilized magnetic flux, ohmic/resistive losses, and eddy current heating. Define the boundary conditions, switching requirements, pulse shapes, and power regulation dependencies for the electrical and control subsystems. 3. Component Design & System Integration Collaborate with external project partners to integrate custom-engineered, high-current pulsed-power coils optimized for mechanical stability and thermal resilience. Oversee the concept design of specialized payloads to ensure seamless compatibility with the electromagnetic launch environment. Address system-level integration challenges arising from high-intensity electromagnetic fields on surrounding components. 4. Thermal Management & Power Control Identify transient heat sources within the accelerator stages and propose highly effective thermal management and cooling solutions. Optimize the physical routing of the electrical power supply to the coil inductors to handle extreme stress environments. 5. Experimental Validation & Safety Design, build, and operate an experimental test setup to validate simulation data, testing for acceleration efficiency, discharge pulse dynamics, and heat management. Conduct comprehensive safety analyses on high-voltage and high-energy electromagnetic components. Establish strict safety protocols and ensure total compliance with relevant electrical safety standards for pulsed-power operations. Required Technical Skills & Experience: Education: Master’s or Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a highly related field with a focus on Electromagnetics. Simulation Mastery: Extensive experience with multi-physics simulation software (e.g., COMSOL, Altair Flux, or MATLAB/Simulink) focusing on transient electromagnetic fields. Pulsed Power Expertise: Knowledge of inductance acceleration, magnetic forces, high-current switching, and power electronics. Thermal & Mechanical Insight: Familiarity with managing thermal dissipation and mechanical stress in high-energy electrical systems. Hands-on Testing: Experience setting up laboratory diagnostics, high-speed data acquisition systems, and working safely with high-voltage hardware. Preferred Attributes: Experience in advanced aerospace or defence R&D, specifically in coil gun, or linear induction motor technologies. About the role We are looking for a professional with a strong focus on test engineering and hands-on experience with test equipment and measurements, and related software development. You will join a growing and collaborative engineering team dedicated to developing advanced test solutions that support the full product lifecycle – from early prototypes to high-volume manufacturing. As a MEMS Test Engineer, you will play a key role in developing, optimizing, and executing test systems – both hardware and software – for a broad range of MEMS products, ensuring performance meets customer specifications and industry standards. You will collaborate cross-functionally within Silex and communicate with both suppliers and customers. In this role you will: Design and implement test solutions based on MEMS device specifications, covering electrical, optical, and mechanical performance. Develop and validate test cases and procedures for both manual and automated wafer-level and die-level test systems. Select, configure, and maintain specialized test instrumentation, including probe stations, precision source-measure units (SMUs), oscilloscopes, and custom MEMS test fixtures. Perform hands-on testing in both cleanroom and laboratory environments, ensuring proper handling of sensitive MEMS devices and adherence to ESD and contamination-control procedures. Analyze and interpret test data to evaluate device performance, identify trends, and diagnose issues at both the device and system level. Collaborate closely with design, process, and product engineers to troubleshoot, optimize test coverage, and improve product yield and reliability. Thoroughly document all test plans, configurations, and results to ensure full traceability and enable continuous improvement in test methods and equipment. Drive improvements in throughput, automation, and measurement accuracy across the MEMS test process flow. Ensure all activities comply with quality standards, customer requirements, and relevant industry regulations. We are looking for someone who has A Masters degree or Ph.D. in Engineering, preferably in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field. At least 3 years of experience in electrical measurements, device characterization, or production tests – ideally including MEMS or semiconductor tests within an industrial environment or academia. Experience in LabVIEW programming for test automation, instrument control, and data acquisition. Proficiency in Python and familiarity with SQL databases for data analysis, visualization and structured data management. Hands-on experience with a wide range of test equipment, such as source-measure units (SMUs), parametric analyzers, probe stations, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other specialized tools used in MEMS testing. Experience in cleanroom or controlled laboratory environments. Strong analytical mindset and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex device- and system-level issues. Basic knowledge or experience in 3D CAD modeling and prototype manufacturing methods (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining) for test fixture design and development.
