The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments: The Department of Infectious Diseases The Department of Microbiology and Immunology The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology The Department of Laboratory Medicine At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets. We can offer an exciting opportunity to join the Mucin Biology groups at the Department of Medical Chemistry and Cell Biology, Institute of Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. These are internationally renowned research groups forming a strong collaborative network focused on understanding the role of mucins and mucus in protecting epithelial surfaces and how their dysfunction contributes to disease. Duties The detailed molecular structure of mucins and related proteins in mucus is not yet fully understood. This is especially true regarding how different proteins and their domains interact with each other and thereby organize the mucus. With increased knowledge of the structure of mucus proteins, we will now be able to predict and begin to understand how different properties of mucus arise, how it can change, and how defects in this structure can be linked to disease. We will express and purify mucins, various mucin domains, and mucus-associated proteins for structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy combined with data processing and modeling, as well as perform other biochemical methods including thermophoresis. The work will be carried out independently, involving both practical structural biology research, compilation of results, and publication. Qualifications A doctoral degree in a subject area relevant to the studies is required. This project requires you to have extensive experience and knowledge in structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy and in advanced analysis of the generated data. Knowledge and experience in expressing mucins and their domains, purifying this type of proteins, and performing a wide range of biochemical analyses are expected. Experience in mucin biology research is considered a strong merit. You must have substantial experience conducting independent research at an internationally leading level within the area of structural biology of glycoproteins, such as mucins, and related proteins. You should have an extensive publication record in a relevant research field. The research environment is international, with English as the main language of communication; therefore, excellent spoken and written English skills are required. Employment The position is a temporary appointment and full-time for 1 year with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed. Postdoctoral researcher position in global change biology At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The department is placed at two different localities: in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg marine research station operated by the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. The current employment is based at Natrium, with the possibility to conduct research projects at the marine station. We offer The University of Gothenburg is a state authority, which means special benefits, more holidays and a great pension. You can read more about our employment benefits here. Subject area Global change biology Project description Climate change and the increased frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves pose growing threats to the persistence of animal biodiversity. A central challenge in global change biology is to understand why species and populations differ in their vulnerability, so that research can inform conservation, management, and policy. However, we still cannot reliably predict how climate change will affect animal populations across their full life cycle. Accumulating evidence suggests that early life stages can be more sensitive to extreme heat than adults, yet developmental stages remain critically understudied. Current methods used to quantify climate vulnerability are also often not directly comparable between embryos and later life stages, which has further limited our ability to identify critical windows of sensitivity to climate change. New methodological advances now allow us to standardise how we compare vulnerability across life stages, opening up exciting opportunities to understand how climate change affects all stages of life. The central question of this postdoc project is: How and why does thermal sensitivity vary across the life cycle, and what are the consequences for animal populations under climate change? This fully funded 2-year postdoc project is part of a research program funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) on the vulnerability of fish life stages to climate change. The successful applicant is expected to combine empirical research with evidence synthesis and comparative analyses. While some projects will primarily focus on fish, comparative studies can be broader in scope, and there will be opportunities to study other taxa (e.g., invertebrates). The project plan is flexible in its scope, and the postdoc is encouraged to develop original research questions. The applicant is also expected to take part in collaborations at both local and global scales, and take leadership roles through the Thermal Ecology Alliance (e.g., managing globally distributed experiments). Therefore, the successful postdoc will have excellent opportunities to develop a large collaborative network and address broad questions that no individual lab can tackle alone. The postdoc will be primarily supervised by Patrice Pottier, and co-supervised by Prof. Fredrik Jutfelt at the University of Gothenburg. The successful applicant will have meaningful opportunities to shape the intellectual and collaborative culture of the group, while collaborating more broadly within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and beyond. The successful applicant will benefit from at least one supervisory meeting per week, frequent and structured support during the early stages of all projects, mentoring and career development guidance, and gradual transfer of responsibilities. Expectations, working ethics, and supervision needs will be discussed openly at the start of the position, and revisited through mutual feedback and open communication. The successful applicant will have opportunities to develop skills in experimental design, laboratory and field research on animals, statistical modelling and programming, evidence synthesis, climate modelling, open and reproducible research, scientific writing, teaching, communication, as well as leadership, project, and people management. The successful applicant will also have opportunities to co-supervise MSc and/or PhD students. Training will be tailored to the career objectives of the applicant. Duties The principal duty of the postdoctoral research is to undertake high-quality research, communicate their findings, and develop/strengthen skills that will benefit their scientific career. The successful applicant will: • Develop research questions and study designs; • Conduct laboratory experiments and, where relevant, field sampling or environmental monitoring; • Collect, manage, analyse, and interpret data using transparent and reproducible workflows; • Conduct evidence synthesis, meta-analysis, comparative analyses, or environmental modelling; • Comply with relevant animal-welfare, ethical, data-management, and health-and-safety requirements; • Communicate results through scientific publications, seminars, conferences, and other appropriate formats; • Participate constructively in departmental and collegial activities • Contribute to leading and managing large collaborations through the Thermal Ecology Alliance Periods of fieldwork at Kristineberg marine station or research visits elsewhere in Sweden or abroad may form part of the project. The need, timing, and accessibility of such activities will be discussed and planned with the successful applicant. This is a 100% postdoctoral research position (postdoctor) targeted for recent PhD graduates, with potential opportunities to contribute to teaching and departmental duties up to 20% of full-time employment. PhD position in global change biology At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals, and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these fields to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's doctoral student pages. https://www.gu.se/en/doctoral-studies We offer The University of Gothenburg is a state authority, which means special benefits, more holidays and a great pension. Project description Climate change and the increased frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves pose growing threats to the persistence of animal biodiversity. The central question of this PhD project is: How and why does thermal sensitivity vary across the life cycle, and what are the consequences for animal populations under climate change? This fully funded PhD project is part of a research program funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) on the vulnerability of fish life stages to climate change. The PhD project is expected to combine empirical research with evidence synthesis and comparative analyses. While some projects will primarily focus on fish, comparative studies can be broader in scope, and there will be opportunities to study other taxa (e.g., freshwater and marine invertebrates). The project plan is flexible in its scope, and the PhD student will be encouraged to develop original questions and take increasing intellectual ownership of their research agenda. The applicant is also expected to take part in collaborations at both local and global scales, and contribute to the Thermal Ecology Alliance. Therefore, the PhD student will have excellent opportunities to develop a large collaborative network and address broad questions in global change biology. Duties The principal duty is to undertake doctoral education and complete a doctoral thesis under supervision. This includes developing theoretical understanding, methodological expertise, analytical skills, scientific thinking, and increasing research independence. The PhD student will: Develop research questions and study designs; Conduct laboratory experiments and, where relevant, field sampling or environmental monitoring; Collect, manage, analyse, and interpret data using transparent and reproducible workflows; Conduct evidence synthesis, meta-analysis, comparative analyses, or environmental modelling; Comply with relevant animal-welfare, ethical, data-management, and health-and-safety requirements; Communicate results through the doctoral thesis, scientific publications, seminars, conferences, and other appropriate formats; Participate constructively in departmental and collegial activities Contribute to leading and managing collaborations Periods of fieldwork at Kristineberg marine station or research visits elsewhere in Sweden or abroad may form part of the project. The need, timing, and accessibility of such activities will be discussed and planned with the PhD student. As part of the employment, the PhD student may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout the study period, and result in a corresponding extension of the studies. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration. Application You can apply to be admitted to doctoral education via the University of Gothenburg’s recruitment portal. It is your responsibility to ensure that the application is complete as per this notice, and that the University receives it by the final application deadline. Job assignments The position is a full-time position for two years in the Logic and types research group at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct high-quality research and to publish in leading international venues. The applicant should be able to work both independently and as part of a team on research related broadly to the goals of the project, and communicate the results verbally and in writing. The position may also include teaching responsibilities for up to 20% of the workload, such as supervising Bachelor's and Master's thesis projects, as well as the possible co-supervision of PhD students. Eligibility The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant area according to the specific position stated in the advertisement, for example computer science or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area. Assessment Competitive candidates are expected to have a strong background, with an excellent publication record, experience of working with cubical type theory, and ideally also experience of programming language implementation/compilation. However, we also welcome candidates working in nearby areas. Experience of supervising doctoral students, master's students and teaching in third cycle courses will also be considered as a merit. The applicant should be able to work both independently and as part of a team. The abilities to cooperate and to take own initiatives are important qualities together with accuracy and interest in research. When evaluating the applicants, particular emphasis will be put on research skills in the relevant research field. Whereas both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses, English is the working language for research at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58 000 students and 6800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programs draw researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way to the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organization from genes, individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these fields to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The department is based at two different localities: at Natrium on Medicinareberget in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg Center in Fiskebäckskil. The current position is placed at Natrium. This position represents a collaboration between BioEnv and the Gothenburg Botanic Garden (GBG), which is one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe, being ca. 75 hectares in extent and holding roughly 20,000 species from >130 countries in its collections. GBG’s mission is to research and conserve plant diversity, to educate and raise awareness of plants, and to provide a unique visitor experience. The garden hosts important collections of many groups, with research at the garden straddling taxonomy, systematics, evolutionary biology, conservation, genetics, horticulture, and global change and restoration ecology. The GBG staff are diverse, including educators, horticulturists, managers, and scientists. We offer The University of Gothenburg is a state authority, which means special benefits, more holidays and a great pension. You can read more about our employment benefits here. Subject area Botany (Plant Science) Subject area description The postdoctor will work on a Swedish Science Council-funded project using a comprehensive phylogenetic tree of southern African (SA) Asteraceae to evaluate the roles of long-distance dispersal, biome shifts, and environmental change as stimuli of taxonomic and phenotypic diversification. Having undergone a major evolutionary radiation in SA to yield a regional flora comprising ca. 2500 species which has occupied all available environments, from deserts to the alpine zone, Asteraceae offers an ideal system for studying the dynamics of diversification in a continental context. In addition, the physiographic and vegetation diversity of contemporary SA, and a Miocene-Pliocene history involving tectonism and climate change, provide the opportunity to test the agency of contemporary and historical factors as drivers of evolutionary diversification. In addition to the above, the postdoctor will be required to develop an independent research project that makes use of GBG’s living collections and/or contributes to GBG’s conservation agenda. This project may be systematic, address questions relating to trait evolution and/or geographical distribution, or have an explicit conservation focus (e.g., relating to threat assessment and ex situ conservation practices). There is a possibility to participate in international plant collecting trips. The research will be supervised by Prof G Anthony Verboom (University of Gothenburg and GBG), Dr Nicola Bergh (GBG), and Dr Félix Forest (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). The postdoctor will also work closely with a PhD student whose research examines the diversification consequences of intercontinental long-distance dispersal. Duties • Conduct primary research leading to the publication of at least three papers, two relating to the diversification of SA Asteraceae and one relating to the GBG-based project (see above). Analytical methodologies potentially include bioinformatic processing of sequence data, phylogenomic analysis, GIS-based spatial analysis, and comparative macroevolutionary analysis. • Attend local and/or international conferences for the purpose of presenting research findings and contribute to fundraising to support such travels. • Deliver seminars and participate in journal clubs and other academic fora at BioEnv and GBG. • Potentially contribute to teaching in BioEnv, up to 10% of full-time employment. • Organize and run a limited number of training events for GBG scientific and curatorial staff, such as a series of short introductory R workshops (including Rstudio, ggplot, and tidyverse). Subject area Experimental evaluation of the combined effects of changes associated with ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) implementation Subject area description Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) is a marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) technique that may have a significant role in facilitating large scale CO2 removal to substantially reduce global warming and ocean acidification. However considerable uncertainties and knowledge gaps remain regarding its efficacy, technological and economic viability, its environmental and ecological impacts and its governance. This 2 years postdoctoral position is part of the EU Horizon project OAeSIS (https://oaesis.eu/), a diverse, interdisciplinary team of leading experts in natural science, law, governance and socio-economic assessments. One key aspect is quantifying the impacts of OAE on key species, communities and biodiversity, including interactions with other marine ecosystem stressors - assessing the feasibility and sustainability of OAE as a tool to counteract climate change and ocean acidification The position specifically focuses on resolving the combined effects of changes associated with different OAE implementation methods through experiments using a range of marine organisms. This will allow to produce performance curves for key drivers associated with OAE deployments, multiple stressors experiments, and modelization of performance landscapes for different OAE methods using experimental data and literature review. This will be done in close collaboration with key partners within the consortium, particularly with the University of Copenhagen and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The position will contribute to enabling informed decision and policy-making regarding the potential application of this leading mCDR approach as a climate mitigation tool. Duties Task #1 - To resolve the non-linear biological effects and potential interactions for all main drivers (TA, pH, trace elements) associated with OAE deployment combined with modelling. • Evaluation of state-of-the-art using meta-analysis; • Fill-up the gaps by resolving performance curves for each driver using key species and life-history stages in laboratory experiments; • Development of a mechanistic model for biological impact of OAE deployment at the species level; • Use the model to project impacts under different scenarios. Task #2 - Experimentally evaluate the model developed in Task #1 using a multiple stressor experimental approach, identify potential novel interactions and use the collected data to improve the mechanistic model • Perform complex multiple stressors experiments • Improve the mechanistic model developed in Task #1 accounting for potential interactions. The work will thus include: • Field sampling of key species (e.g. echinoderms, bivalves); • Perform single and multiple drivers experiments manipulating the carbonate chemistry and trace elements simulating different methods for OAE deployment; • Meta-analysis of the existing literature; • Statistical analysis to resolve performance curves and landscapes; • Publication of the results and communication with other partners and stakeholders in the OAeSIS project. The Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts translational research primarily on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in order to improve health and healthcare in the community. The overall goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of a very high international standard. We have more bacteria than our own cells in the body and these bacteria interact with each other in ecosystems, the microbiota, which can affect how we feel. By combining clinical samples and gnotobiotic animal models, we have shown that the gut microbiota affects our physiology and metabolism. We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher who can analyze the gut microbiota and isolate specific microbial modulators for metabolic diseases by quantifying and characterizing bacterial species, strains, and genomes with a focus on diet-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions within the gut microbiota. Read more about the research group here: https://backhedlab.org/ Subject area Microbiology Subject area description The gut microbiota contains approximately 1,000 times more genes than the human genome and constitutes a complex ecosystem that influences host physiology through the production of bioactive metabolites. Despite major advances in microbiome research, it remains largely unknown how individual bacterial species and strain-level genetic variation contribute to microbiome function and the development of metabolic diseases. This project aims to identify and characterize bacterial species and strains within Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae, and particularly the genus Faecalibacterium, one of the most abundant and functionally important bacterial groups in the healthy human gut microbiota. Duties The successful candidate will investigate the functional diversity of Faecalibacterium and its interactions with other gut bacteria using an integrated experimental and bioinformatic approach. The project combines comparative genomic and bioinformatic analyses to determine how strain-level genetic variation shapes bacterial metabolism and functional capacity with physiological characterization of bacterial growth, substrate utilization, and production of bioactive metabolites under defined anaerobic culture conditions. Building on our observation that Faecalibacterium abundance is associated with increased stability of the gut microbial community, potentially through interactions with members of the Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae families, the candidate will also isolate and characterize novel bacterial strains from faecal samples obtained from healthy donors. These isolates will be used in experimental models to investigate microbial interactions, cross-feeding mechanisms, and their effects on host metabolism. The project integrates clinical cohort data, large-scale genomic analyses, anaerobic cultivation, metabolomics, and experimental model systems to identify microbial mechanisms and bioactive metabolites that contribute to metabolic health and may provide the foundation for future microbiome-based treatments for cardiometabolic diseases. Eligibility To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. Assessment criteria Documented experience in the preparation, optimisation and development of culture media for strictly anaerobic human gut bacteria, including YCFA fatty acid medium, as well as cultivation and isolation of strictly anaerobic gut bacteria under anaerobic conditions, particularly using Coy chambers or equivalent anaerobic cultivation systems, is required. Documented experience in genome-based phylogenetic identification and functional characterisation of bacterial species and strains is also required, including analyses using tools such as Protologger, phylogenetic analyses and phylogenetic tree reconstruction, average nucleotide identity (ANI), digital DNA–DNA hybridisation (dDDH), and functional genome annotation using software such as Prokka and COGs/EggNOG. Experience in programming and statistical data analysis using R, together with excellent written and spoken English, is also required. Experience in the isolation, cultivation and physiological characterisation of human gut commensals belonging to the Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae families, particularly butyrate-producing and/or fibre-degrading bacteria, is considered highly meritorious. Experience with faecal cultures derived from human samples, including selective and enrichment-based isolation strategies under strictly anaerobic conditions, is also considered highly meritorious. Additional merit will be given to applicants with experience in assessing bacterial metabolism of dietary components, including dietary fibres, complex carbohydrates and other diet-derived substrates. Experience in the physiological and functional characterisation of strictly anaerobic gut bacteria, including the use of API kits or other phenotypic methods for bacterial characterisation, particularly of Faecalibacterium and related human gut anaerobes, is also considered meritorious. International research experience, for example through doctoral or postdoctoral training abroad, is also considered meritorious. Great importance will be attached to the applicant's ability to collaborate and interact effectively with researchers and clinicians in a multidisciplinary research environment. Great emphasis will also be placed on personal suitability, including the ability to take initiative, work independently, demonstrate flexibility, and apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
