The Opportunity As a manager and experienced Application Engineer for Power Conversion, Power Quality Industry and Grid Connection you will join a global team shaping the future of reliable, stable, and high‑quality power systems. The Opportunity We are looking for an Electrical Lead Engineer to join our team at Grids and Power Quality Solutions. GPQSS is working with FACTS applications in Västerås, Sweden. FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) technology enables power system owners to increase capacity in the existing electric power system while improving electrical stability. The opportunity The High-Power Laboratory is one of the few laboratories in the world that are unique in verifying the function of high-voltage products under various switching moments that can occur in the power grid. For example, making and breaking of short-circuit currents or breaking capacitive or inductive currents including associated transient overvoltage. The opportunity Do you want to enable the green energy transition, and together with colleagues meet the world’s needs for sustainable, flexible and insecure energy? In your work you will be part of HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) business unit that is a part of Hitachi Energy’s division. The main HVDC office is in Ludvika, but for the right candidate the Västerås office may be an option. The unit develops, manufactures and sells DC transmission systems on a global market. Hitachi Energy’s developed HVDC technology is used to transmit electricity over long distances and for power transmission via submarine cables, thus enabling stability cooperation between grids, sea-based wind power and more. In the field of power quality, the subject enjoys a strong international reputation thanks to its world-leading research. Subject description Electric Power Engineering covers studies of sustainable systems for production and transpor-tation of electrical energy, and the interaction between power grid, electricity production, and electricity consumption. Project description The project aims to develop models that describe how HVDC installations affect, and are af-fected by, power quality in electrical networks up to 150 kHz. Measurements will be used to further develop existing models and to distinguish between primary and secondary emissions as well as nonlinear interactions. The results will provide the basis for a generalized model of emission and immunity related to HVDC installations.The study will also investigate network resonances, interactions between multiple HVDC in-stallations, and the effects on transformers and other grid-connected equipment. The project is carried out in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Hitachi Energy. Duties A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a doctoral student, you will be trained in scientific research through the publication of journal articles and presentations at national and international conferences. You will also complete both mandatory and elective doctoral courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to gain teaching experience. As a researcher, you often work as a neutral party in various contexts, providing an excellent opportunity to learn how to manage and contribute to challenging development and research projects. Your work will primarily focus on theoretical modeling and simulations, although laboratory and field measurements may also form part of the research activities. Qualifications You are qualified to apply for this position if you have an MSc or equivalent technical degree with specialization appropriate for research in electrical power engineering such as electrical engineering, electronics, energy, engineering physics or similar areas.
