About GreenWave 2 GreenWave 2 is a collaborative innovation project aimed at developing a sustainable European value chain for graphite production based on forest-derived biomass. The project focuses on converting lignin, a by-product from the pulp and paper industry, into battery-grade graphite through an energy-efficient microwave graphitization process. By coating lignin onto silicon carbide (SiC) substrates and applying rapid microwave heating, the project seeks to significantly reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with conventional graphite production. As graphite is a critical raw material for lithium-ion batteries and is currently sourced largely from fossil-based or non-European supply chains, GreenWave 2 contributes to increased resource security, industrial resilience, and climate neutrality. The project also evaluates the performance of the produced graphite in battery applications while assessing techno-economic feasibility and environmental sustainability, supporting the development of a competitive and sustainable graphite industry within Europe. During the project work you will be a part of our team at RISE and will be supported by supervisors both from RISE and your home university throughout the project. Most of the practical laboratory work will be carried out in our facility Printed Electronics Arena in Norrköping. Project research topic Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is becoming an integral component of product development in the electronics industry. Consumers want to know the environmental impacts of the electronic products they purchase, ranging from their carbon footprint and energy efficiency to end-of-life considerations and recyclability. Sustainability of electronic products is also high on the agenda of policy makers who want to guarantee a safe, sustainable and secure future for their constituents. This thesis project will focus on developing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model for a novel microwave-based graphitization process that converts lignin, a renewable by-product from the forest industry, into battery-grade graphite. The work will include mapping material and energy flows, collecting process data from laboratory and pilot-scale experiments, and evaluating the environmental impacts of the technology. The developed model will be used to identify key environmental hotspots and compare the sustainability performance of bio-based graphite production with conventional fossil-based and mined graphite supply chains. Project activities This diploma work comprises of: * Understanding the basics of the role of graphite and hard carbon in batteries * Understanding synthetic graphite production (both generic and project specific) * Defining the scope of the LCA study * Making a list of the environmental inputs and outputs of processes with the help of a researcher from RISE and creating a comprehensive LCA model in the LCA software SimaPro * Performing LCA calculations * Interpretation of the LCA results * Presenting the environmental finding to internal and possibly external audiences and potential for optimisation Student profile You have an interest in environmental sustainability, material production processes, electronics and/or science. You should be MSc student in the fields of environment, physics, materials or chemistry science, or related subject. Job Scope Why does the role exist? High level purpose of function. The Manufacturing technician is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient production and maintenance operations. This position covers a broad technical scope, including production support, troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, and continuous improvements in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation systems. Technicians act as first-line responders to equipment and process issues, ensuring minimum downtime and maximum output and high quality. Key Responsibilities Overall areas of responsibilities and activities Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to) Assure safe conditions through defined procedures (including Lock out tag out – LOTO) during equipment repairs, cleaning, or inspections. Perform risk analysis and participate in risk assessments according to established routines. Work under the defined shift model to ensure customer demand is met in the assigned production time. Troubleshoot and resolve production line issues (mechanical, electrical, automation, process) and completing validation runs of production to confirm the effectiveness of work. Support production teams with first-line problem solving and escalate unsolved issues. Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on production equipment (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic). Install, maintain, and repair equipment, wiring, and systems (mechanical assemblies, electrical systems). Inspect equipment for wear, vibrations, lubrication, or electrical faults and escalate to one level above the need for repair if necessary. Six Sigma White or Yellow Belt certification is a plus. Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) Basic IT literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Understanding how to utilize equipment to run efficient manufacturing with energy and costing optimization. Experience in troubleshooting with specialized diagnostic equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, etc). Experience with equipment, piping, pumps, valves, control tools, chemicals, and electronics. Develop and issue DOEs (Design of Experiments) and schedule process and equipment trials onsite and at supplier sites (if required). Deliver a line capable of obtaining PPAP approval, following a structured quality gate model. Requirements Educational background and previous experience required for the role Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in production, equipment, or engineering-related roles. Proven track record of leading manufacturing process improvements and production optimization in a factory environment following recognised project management techniques. Experience in building and scaling production in a fast-growing environment, ideally within the battery, food, pharma, paper and pulp, semiconductor, electrochemical, or similar industries. Hands-on experience and interest in equipment commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimisation. Proficient in detailed root cause analysis, structured problem-solving methodologies and continuous improvement. Familiarity with quality assurance troubleshooting tools. Experience working to industry standards obtaining certification including ISO, IATF &VDA . Experience with statistical process control and process capability analysis. Experience working with preventive maintenance strategies and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) concepts within a production environment. Experience in spare part prioritisation and stock optimisation, balancing equipment availability with cost efficiency. Specific skills & Knowledge Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and six sigma methodologies . Knowledge of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) metrics and their application in production environments. Requirements Educational background and previous experience required for the role Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in production, equipment, or engineering-related roles. Proven track record of leading manufacturing process improvements and production optimization in a factory environment following recognised project management techniques. Experience in building and scaling production in a fast-growing environment, ideally within the battery, food, pharma, paper & pulp, semiconductor, electrochemical, or similar industries. Hands-on experience and interest in equipment commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimisation. Proficient in detailed root cause analysis, structured problem-solving methodologies and continuous improvement. Familiarity with quality assurance troubleshooting tools. Experience working to industry standards obtaining certification including ISO, IATF &VDA . Experience with statistical process control and process capability analysis. Specific skills & Knowledge Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and six sigma methodologies . Knowledge of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) metrics and their application in production environments. · Strong technical curiosity, analytical mindset, and business-oriented problem-solving skills. · Troubleshooting skills with diagnostic equipment. Ability to document technical problems concisely. Excellent English skills, both written and oral, are essential. Basic Swedish and other language skills are a plus. You should have good communication skills and be able to work in close collaboration with colleagues from many different teams. Ability to work within varying environments including clean-rooms and dry-rooms, while wearing appropriate PPE. Comfortable operating in high-profile, international, and high-pressure environments. A genuine technical interest and passion about working within production is highly valued.
