Do you want to join an international team of expertise to support industry in better understanding which defects in fibre-reinforced composite structures that can be accepted without compromising quality or safety? We have an open position for a doctoral candidate within LEGEND – a European doctoral network developing increased understanding of, and computational tools for studying the effects of defects in composite structures. About us The Doctoral student position is placed at the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering, which belongs to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. We foster an inclusive, friendly, and helpful work environment to which we welcome you to contribute. Our activities integrate computational mechanics and advanced materials technology, combining multidisciplinary expertise to predict, understand, and elevate the performance of engineering materials and structures. Within the project, you will also be connected to an international team of experts in the area of mechanics of composites through LEGEND – a Marie Sklodowska Curie Action doctoral network project. LEGEND, encompassing a collection of European research organisations and industries, will recruit 14 doctoral candidates, offering a lot of cross-over collaboration. For more information, please visit the LEGEND https://www.legend-msca-dn.com/. About the research project This project focuses on redefining how defects are assessed in composite aerospace structures - helping industry move beyond overly conservative repair or discard decisions. The Doctoral student will develop an advanced global–local modelling approach that captures how individual and interacting defects influence structural performance. By combining high-fidelity simulations with experimental testing of lab-scale components, our research will generate new data, validate predictive models, and establish improved defect acceptance criteria. The outcome will be a practical, industry-ready methodology that enables safer, more cost-efficient decisions when dealing with defects in composite components. The project will involve collaborations and secondments (in total 8 months during the first three years) at University of Kore (2 months) and Leonardo S.p.A. (6 months) in Italy. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Applied Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Computational Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics or similar. Documented experience (education/courses or thesis project with high grades) in the finite element method and the mechanics of fibre-reinforced polymers. Interest and high skills in programming and numerical methods Strong written and verbal communication skills in English *for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. We also expect that you are analytical, ambitious, independent, and a strong team player that thrives through collaboration. The following experience will strengthen your application: Documented knowledge (education/courses or thesis project) in computational homogenisation and/or computational micro/mesoscale modelling. What you will do Develop your scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research through written scientific publications and oral presentations at international conferences. Collaborate with fellow doctoral candidates within the LEGEND project, utilising synergies between projects. Actively participate in General Assembly meetings and doctoral training events within LEGEND, distributed across Europe. Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Solid and Structural Mechanics. Develop and implement a computational framework that links small-scale material defects to large-scale structural performance, enabling accurate prediction of how defects affect strength, stiffness, and fracture behaviour. Teach on Chalmers' undergraduate level corresponding to 10 percent of working hours. Contract terms The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 10%, which extends the position up to four and a half years. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn. Applicants must not already be in possession of a doctoral degree. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible. Applicants must not not have resided, worked, or studied in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of recruitment. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. Current transmitters are limited in terms of their bandwidth, energy efficiency and linearity. In this research project you will work on the intersectional area of antenna design, circuit design and signal processing to investigate novel nonlinear multi-antenna transmitters that overcome these limitations. By utilizing antenna mutual coupling for effective amplitude modulation – a shift from the traditional view that considers it detrimental – you will overcome existing limitations in frequency, efficiency, power, and linearity, thereby fostering sustainable digital transformation. About us The position is hosted by https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mc2/research/microwave-electronics/ at https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mc2/ wich focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academy, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a 1000 square meter cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment. About the research project You will work in a complementary team to investigate a new transmitter topology. Your responsibility will be to design microwave components such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays but also derive the theory how to feed the individual amplifiers for the most energy efficient transmission in a certain direction. The goal is to develop a new scalable transmitter architecture that embraces mutual antenna coupling as a means of load modulation - allowing neighboring elements to efficiently create modulated signals similar to classical Chireix outphasing, but using the antenna aperture as combining element. The position is hosted at the department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience where you will have access to state of the art microwave measurement facilities at the Kollberg lab. The project is supported by collaboration agreements with semiconductor manufacturers that allow fabrication in CMOS, GaAs and GaN processes. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: A doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, Applied Physics or equivalent. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. The following experience will strengthen your application: Specialization in wireless and/or wireless communication systems engineering and/or analog circuit design. Work experience with microwave circuit design Work experience with signal processing It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline Experience with Cadence Virtuoso, MWO, Keysight ADS, SPICE, Matlab. Experience with high frequency RF and measurement equipment Experience in building RF and microwave systems Experience in microwave and millimeter wave integrated circuit design Experience with digital signal processing What you will do Your major responsibilities as postdoctoral researcher are to independently conduct research and publish results, but also co-supervise some Ph.D. students and prepare reports for funding agencies. One Doctoral student is already working in this area, and you are expected to take on some supervision responsibilities as well and efficiently work on the research question as a team. The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. Contract terms The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. About the research project We are looking for two Postdocs with a strong background in functional programming to join our dynamic environment. We have two rather flexible subprojects, and we want to recruit the best functional programmers and tailor the exact research focus to your unique strengths. Depending on your background and interests, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our ongoing research initiatives. These range from exploring the foundations of programming languages (such as advanced type systems and functional logic programming) to bridging the gap between ad hoc array processing and formally verified functional programming using interactive theorem provers. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: A doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. A solid background in functional programming. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. The following experience will strengthen your application: We expect you to have documented expertise in one or more of the following areas: Programming language semantics and type systems Functional logic programming Property-based testing Interactive theorem proving (such as Agda, Lean, or Rocq) Domain-specific languages (for example, for hardware design or parallel programming) Array or tensor programming Applications to physical sciences, dimensional analysis, or climate impact modeling It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline. What you will do As a Postdoc, you will drive independent and collaborative research to push the boundaries of functional programming and formal methods. In addition to theory development, your work will have the potential to scale algebraically-accountable architectures to high-stakes, continuous domains, encompassing foundational research, formal verification, and language design. Working closely with the core research team (Patrik Jansson, Koen Claessen, and Mary Sheeran), you will develop novel techniques, prove their properties, and co-author high-quality scientific publications. Beyond your core research, you will have the rewarding opportunity to mentor MSc or PhD students, sharing your expertise with the next generation of computer scientists. Extent: 100% employment, distributed as 80% research and 20% departmental duties (typically teaching at the BSc or MSc level). The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. Contract terms The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment.
