HEAD OF ENGINEERING, ADYEN PROTECT We are seeking a visionary and highly technical Head of Engineering to lead the development and scaling of Adyen Protect. Adyen Protect is our ML-first product suite designed to detect and mitigate payment fraud in real-time across billions of transactions. In this role, you will lead a specialized domain of four high-impact engineering teams dedicated to staying ahead of increasingly sophisticated global fraud networks. You will be the strategic driver behind our risk engine, ensuring that our ML models are not only accurate and performant but also transparent and actionable for the world's largest merchants. This is a role for a leader who thrives at the intersection of big data, predictive modeling, and high-availability systems. You will be responsible for ensuring that as Adyen grows, our ability to protect our merchants and their consumers remains world-class. WHAT YOU’LL DO: * Vision & Strategy: Define and execute the technical roadmap for Adyen Protect, aligning Machine Learning capabilities with the evolving needs of global e-commerce and regulatory landscapes. * Scale ML Operations: Lead four multidisciplinary teams in building and maintaining scalable infrastructure for model training, real-time scoring, and automated experimentation (A/B testing) at the millisecond level. * Engineering Excellence: Establish and maintain high standards for engineering quality and reliability. Ensure our fraud detection systems are resilient, low-latency, and capable of processing massive data volumes without downtime. * Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner closely with Product Leaders, Risk officers, and other parts of the business to translate complex fraud patterns into robust technical features and automated mitigation strategies. * Team Development: Mentor and grow a high-performing organization of engineers and engineering managers. Foster an inclusive environment that encourages rapid prototyping, ethical AI practices, and continuous learning. * Merchant Advocacy: Interface with our largest global merchants to understand their unique risk profiles and ensure Adyen Protect provides the granular control and insights they need to grow their business safely. WHO YOU ARE: * ML & Data Enthusiast: You have a deep understanding of Machine Learning lifecycles, from data engineering and feature extraction to model deployment and monitoring. * Proven Leader: You have a track record of leading complex engineering organizations and managing other managers, specifically within high-growth fintech or SaaS environments. * Strategic Problem Solver: You can balance the immediate need for fraud mitigation with the long-term goal of reducing "false positives" to maximize merchant revenue. * Tech-Fluent: You remain technically literate and are comfortable diving into architecture discussions regarding distributed systems, data pipelines, and real-time processing. * Collaborative: You excel at building bridges between technical and non-technical stakeholders, explaining the "why" behind complex (ML) decisions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * 7+ years of technical experience, including significant tenure as a hands-on software or machine learning engineer. * 5+ years of experience in manager-of-managers roles, overseeing multiple engineering teams. * Experience with High-Scale Systems: Proven track record of managing products that handle high-throughput, low-latency workloads (e.g., payments, cybersecurity, or real-time bidding). * Domain Expertise: Familiarity with fraud detection, risk management, or identity verification systems is highly preferred. Engineering Lead for Fleet Management As the Engineering Lead for Fleet Management, you will ensure our merchants can deploy and scale their in-person payment infrastructure with zero friction. You own the technical strategy for our global supply chain, automating the entire lifecycle of a terminal: factory ordering, global distribution, replacement, decommissioning, and reporting. Intuitive and self-service tools are the key to empowering merchants to manage their own stores and terminal fleets independently. You will be driven to create a simple, seamless, and automated experience from a complex logistics operation. You will lead the development of the configuration of our terminals - handling everything from merchant settings and dynamic content to payment kernel and SoftPOS configurations. The integrity of our Android ecosystem also falls within scope, overseeing the secure signing and deployment of apps and certificates. What You'll Do As the Engineering Lead, reporting to the SVP of Payments and collaborating with peers globally, your focus will be: * Provide clear guidance, purpose, and mission for engineering teams. * Create an environment that fosters continuous innovation. * Focused on quality, have a high attention to detail and automation. Who You Are * 10+ years of engineering experience, including 5+ years as a leader building and mentoring high-performing engineering teams within global companies, with a track record of delivering complex, scalable platforms * Experience hiring and managing a sizeable software development organisation (ideally 25-50 engineers), including managing managers, and setting an exemplary engineering culture * Skilled in building large-scale, distributed systems, ideally with expertise in Java or similar programming languages, and a passion for software architecture, scalability, and maintainability * Experience with payments or the logistics industry would be helpful. Senior AI Engineer We are looking for a Senior AI Engineer to join our AML (Anti-Money Laundering) Tech team in Amsterdam. You will help build our next-generation financial crime investigation system, leveraging AI to manage and mitigate risk at scale. With our global footprint, you will have access to a uniquely rich dataset to fuel these solutions. You will bridge the gap between applied research and engineering excellence, taking ownership of the end-to-end lifecycle of these AI systems – from initial ideation to production. We are building a Human-in-the-Loop system. By evolving our capabilities from isolated workflows to a highly performant, trustworthy agentic system, you will shape how humans and AI collaborate in a complex, regulated domain. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the foundational group driving AI product development at Adyen. You will be building zero-to-one products, setting the architectural standards for our team, and defining how AI is practically deployed across the company. In this role, you will: * Build Agentic Systems: You will lead the design and deployment of robust, multi-step AI agents tailored for complex investigation workflows (orchestration, tool dispatching, state and memory management, error recovery, human-in-the-loop design). * Develop Platform Infrastructure: You will build a scalable modular agent platform that seamlessly integrates with enterprise data to support Adyen’s massive operational scale and diverse use cases. * Architect Evaluation Frameworks: You will design custom, domain-specific benchmarks and reusable infrastructure to rigorously test LLM reliability, edge cases, failure modes, and overall production readiness. * Provide Strategic Leadership: You will act as the leading engineer for the team, driving the AI product roadmap in close collaboration with a high-performing product team and leadership, guide company-wide MLOps decisions, evaluate third-party tools, and lead cross-functional integration. Who You Are: * Experienced Builder: 5+ years in Software or Machine Learning Engineering, including 2+ years successfully designing and productionizing AI systems. * Agentic Architecture Expert: Proven experience in applied AI, with a focus on building systems around pre-trained models (e.g., context engineering, fine-tuning, RAG, inference optimization, orchestrating model interactions with external tools to deliver solutions, multi-step tasks). You know exactly what separates a research prototype from a production agent. * Engineering & MLOps Pragmatist: Highly proficient in Python with a strong grasp of engineering best practices and tracking "LLM-native" metrics (e.g., granular tracing, tokens/sec, cost-per-request). * Proactive Leader: A self-starter who thrives in ambiguity, continuously raises the technical bar, influences system architecture, and mentors the team to build for scale. * Educated: Master’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent technical background. * Bonus (Nice to Have): A strong foundation in traditional Machine Learning.
