This position requires the individual to develop and demonstrate expertise in performing the core responsibilities outlined below. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Demonstrate a strong understanding of structural engineering principles involved in the design of structural steel and concrete foundations for utility scale solar, BESS, and substation-related projects. * Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills; must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality work through effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, including substation physical, protection & control, SCADA, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, collection system, studies, construction, procurement, and project management. * Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders and internal teams, actively coordinating engineering and design activities across disciplines to ensure integration, compliance, and consistency throughout project execution. * Lead engineering efforts from project initiation to completion, working closely with drafters, designers, and engineers to develop, review, and finalize design drawings and packages. * Draft, review, and finalize a variety of technical documents including master deliverable lists, design criteria, engineering reports, specifications, bills of materials, and proposals. * Have a solid understanding of industry practices and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 113, ACI 318, ACI 336.1, AISC 360, IEEE, NEC and other applicable codes and standards. * Review internal and external designs for compliance with safety codes, client standards, constructability, and best design practices; conduct interdisciplinary reviews to ensure seamless coordination across all engineering disciplines. * Report workload status to the Project Manager (PM) and Discipline Manager (DM) regularly and complete assignments within the defined scope, schedule, and budget, while ensuring a high level of accuracy and adherence to Atwell’s quality standards. * Assist PMs in the development of proposal documents, technical scopes, and cost estimates for bids and change orders. * Proficiency in using standard tools including MS Office, Outlook, Teams, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam is essential. * Ability to develop new custom design tools, manual calculation sheets, and report templates using Mathcad or Excel is required. * Occasional travel (less than 20%) may be required for site visits, field walkdowns, or client meetings. KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLSET * Lead structural design for solar, BESS, and substation projects by producing high-quality drawing packages, including foundation plan/details, steel plan/assemblies, steel fabrication details, design specifications, and bill of materials. * Apply geotechnical and corrosion recommendations in steel pile designs. * Proficiency in structural design software such as ROBOT, RISA 3D, RISA Foundation, L-PILE, MFAD and Hilti PROFIS Engineering Suite, or equivalent software is required. * Experience with software such as Revit, PVcase, Civil 3D, and transmission line modelling tools (PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or PLS-TOWER) is a plus. * Must have experience with power systems equipment, including PV modules, inverters, racking, piles, batteries, BMS/EMS, disconnects, transformers, switchgear, control building, cap banks, and other HV equipment/components. * Review project data to analyze existing site conditions and factors to consider for design development such as: geotechnical reports, manufacturer data, surveys, and easement documents. * Coordinate closely with civil and electrical teams to integrate structural design with site access, equipment placement, structural supports, and foundation requirements. EDUCATION * Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (ABET Accredited) * Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) License required Pay Range - $135,000 - $175,000+ base, end of year bonus, benefits. This role will focus on structural design and drafting support for renewable energy projects, including PV racking and tracker systems, equipment foundations, structural details, site coordination, and construction drawing packages. This is an excellent opportunity for a designer who enjoys technically detailed renewable energy projects and wants exposure to the full structural design process for Solar PV and BESS facilities. The ideal candidate will have experience preparing structural drawing packages, coordinating with engineers and designers across disciplines, and supporting projects from conceptual design through IFC deliverables and construction support. Key Responsibilities * Support the development of structural design drawing packages for utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects. * Prepare and revise structural layouts, foundation plans, pile layouts, racking/tracker details, equipment pad layouts, steel support details, and construction details. * Support structural design for PV tracker systems, fixed-tilt racking, inverter skids, transformer pads, BESS equipment pads, PCS equipment, and related balance-of-plant structures. * Coordinate with structural engineers, civil teams, electrical teams, project managers, vendors, and other design staff to ensure deliverables are accurate, complete, and aligned with project scope. * Incorporate design markups, redlines, vendor information, geotechnical data, survey information, and client comments into structural drawing packages. * Assist with material take-offs, drawing updates, as-builts, and construction support documentation. * Support project execution from conceptual layout through detailed design, IFC packages, and construction support. * Maintain drawing quality, design consistency, and adherence to applicable codes, client standards, project specifications, and Atwell procedures. * Work with multidisciplinary teams across renewables, civil/site, electrical, substation, transmission, and interconnection-related projects. * Support construction and field activities as needed, including responding to design questions, RFIs, and field-related drawing revisions. Qualifications * Associate’s degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in structural drafting/design, civil/structural design, renewable energy design, or related field. * Minimum of 3+ years of structural design or drafting experience, preferably supporting Solar PV, BESS, renewable energy, power delivery, industrial, or civil infrastructure projects. * Proficiency in AutoCAD required; experience with Civil 3D, MicroStation, Revit, or other structural/design platforms is a plus. * Experience preparing structural design packages, including foundation plans, equipment layouts, structural details, sections, notes, schedules, and construction drawings. * Understanding of structural components such as steel supports, concrete foundations, equipment pads, piles, racking systems, tracker systems, and balance-of-plant structures. * Ability to read and interpret engineering markups, vendor drawings, geotechnical reports, survey data, and project specifications. Preferred Experience * Experience supporting utility-scale Solar PV and/or BESS projects. * Familiarity with PV racking systems, single-axis trackers, fixed-tilt systems, driven piles, inverter pads, transformer pads, BESS container pads, PCS equipment pads, and other renewable energy structural elements. * Experience coordinating with civil, electrical, substation, transmission, and geotechnical teams on large-scale energy projects. * Exposure to structural design software or analysis tools such as RISA, STAAD.Pro, L-Pile, Enercalc, or similar platforms is a plus. * Familiarity with renewable energy project phases, including conceptual layouts, permit drawings, detailed design, IFC packages, construction support, and as-builts. * Ability to support multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining drawing quality and design consistency. What You’ll Do * Apply core electrical engineering principles to the design of high-voltage systems (substations, T&D, utility-scale renewables) * Lead engineering tasks from project kickoff through to design package completion * Collaborate with civil, structural, SCADA, and protection & control engineers to deliver integrated project solutions * Prepare technical documentation: one-line diagrams, studies, specs, reports, BOMs, proposals, and client-facing deliverables * Ensure designs meet NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, ANSI, and other industry standards * Support project managers with estimating, proposal writing, and client communication * Participate in interdisciplinary reviews and QA/QC efforts across engineering teams * Occasionally travel (less than 20%) for field walkdowns, client meetings, or construction support Focus Areas (Team Dependent) Protection & Control (P&C) * Design P&C packages: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, relays, communication diagrams, SCADA points * Conduct battery sizing, voltage drop, and conduit fill calcs * Develop relay settings and perform arc flash and coordination studies * Interface with SCADA/RTAC systems and vendors for major equipment submittals Electrical Studies * Perform studies: short circuit, load flow, grounding, insulation coordination, harmonics, arc flash, etc. * Use software tools such as ETAP, CYMCAP, PSS/E, SKM, ASPEN, PSCAD, EMTP, and more * Draft interconnection studies and evaluate compliance with utility or ISO requirements * Translate technical findings into clear client-facing reports What We’re Looking For * Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET Accredited) * 5–10+ years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus in power systems, renewable energy, or substations * Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MS Office, and at least one power system analysis software Pay Range - $90,000 - $150,000 Disclaimer  While AI tools may support your application process, this role is built on human talent.
