Role overview The Developer Experience Architecture team at CarGurus builds the platforms, tooling, and standards that make hundreds of engineers faster, safer, and more productive. You will contribute to some of our highest-leverage initiatives: standardizing AI agentic development (Claude Code, our internal plugin marketplace, and MCP integrations), evolving our authentication and identity platform (Keycloak, OAuth2/OIDC), and improving the paved paths for service and job creation on AWS. These are complex, cross-cutting problems with global impact. You will own well-scoped pieces of work and partner with engineers and product managers across the org, with support and mentorship from senior teammates. And no, you do not need to know about cars to work here. What you'll do * Build and ship developer tooling, framework components, and reusable templates that raise engineering productivity and quality * Contribute to our agentic development ecosystem: Claude Code configuration, plugins and skills, and MCP servers * Strengthen the Auth service and agent identity model using Keycloak, OAuth2, and OIDC * Build and operate services with Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and Kubernetes * Apply our standards, guardrails, and best practices in your work, and help product teams adopt them * Investigate, root cause, and improve system reliability and performance What you'll bring * Two or more years of hands-on, fullstack software design and development, including at least one year of Java.     * Experience with client and server side JavaScript, including React, Node, and Remix, is a plus * Experience building web applications and working with cloud-native systems on AWS or similar cloud providers * Exposure to authentication and identity standards (OAuth2/OIDC), or a strong appetite to learn them * Experience using modern AI coding tools (assistants, agents, MCP) on real engineering work, or eagerness to adopt them * Comfort writing tests, using observability tools, and owning well-scoped tasks end to end * Curious, collaborative, and eager to learn * Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position. On-Target Earnings (OTE) is inclusive of base salary and on-target commission earnings, which applies exclusively to sales roles. Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. This annual base salary forms part of a comprehensive Total Rewards Package. In addition to benefits, this role may qualify for discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Role overview As a core member of the Search Platform team(SPT), this Software Engineer II will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data analysts and product managers, to guide projects from concept through technical design, implementation, testing, and performance measurement.  This person will also develop and deploy clean, well-tested, efficient, and production-ready code, ensuring high standards of quality and performance. What you’ll do * Work in a multi-functional team with data analysts, product managers, and of course, other engineers. * Participate in whiteboard sessions and design conversations on engineering the best solution to the challenges at hand. * Test out new insights with novel and quick experiments. * Iterate rapidly and deploy changes daily. * Collaborate with and be mentored by seasoned engineers. * Improve search and data access experience and performance for millions of users across millions of cars globally. * Ensure reliable and timely production support for mission-critical SPT applications, maintaining optimal performance and addressing high-priority incidents with efficiency. What you’ll bring * 2+ years of professional software development experience.  * Familiar with Java (preferred) or similar language. * Experience with concurrency, multi-threading, web applications and event driven architectures. * Proven expertise in optimizing application performance through the design and implementation of efficient caching strategies and performance improvement techniques. * Data-driven when making decisions. * Experience in Search Engine Framework is preferred. The DevX Tools team is part of Engineering Platform's Developer Experience organization. We are responsible for improving the developer experience through tooling, automation, and centralization of critical information needed by developers across the organization. Our tools — including an Internal Developer Portal and an Automated Slack Messaging Systems are used daily by 280+ engineers and are foundational to how CarGurus ships, discovers, and builds software.  As a Software Development Engineer II (IC2), you will contribute to building and maintaining the internal platforms and tools that empower every product engineering team at CarGurus. You'll work alongside experienced engineers in a collaborative, hybrid environment and grow your skills across the full stack, from backend services and APIs to cloud-native integrations and agentic automations. What you'll do * Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate well-architected software systems that improve the developer experience across CarGurus engineering.  * Build features for Showroom, our internal developer portal that powers deployments, governance, software catalogs, and self-service workflows.  * Support initiatives such as jobs replatforming, AI-powered code review tooling, agent-driven provisioning workflows, AI-powered AWS infrastructure provisioning and CI/CD pipeline modernization.  * Facilitate the modernization of an internal developer portal into an AI-first developer platform, introducing AI-powered tooling to streamline workflows, enhancing the developer experience, and supporting large-scale, multi-repository engineering environments.   What you'll bring * 2+ years of professional software development experience.  * Strong foundation in Java and familiarity with object-oriented design, algorithms, and data structures. * Experience building web applications or backend services, ideally with Spring Boot / Spring Framework.  * A systematic approach to debugging issues within a service or module, including performance impacts.  * Understanding of the testing pyramid and experience writing automated tests at multiple levels.  * Familiarity with AWS services, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code practices and CI/CD tooling.  * Exposure to front-end technologies (JavaScript, React, Remix) for building developer-facing UIs is a plus.  * Interest in AI-powered developer tool and agentic workflows   The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position.
