Learn more about our flexible approach to where we work. OVERVIEW Instacart is the North American leader in online grocery, and we’re building the operating system for the grocery industry so people can access the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Catalog Enrichment team. This team builds the AI-native platform and pipelines that create, enrich, and maintain product attributes across a catalog of tens of millions of products from more than 100,000 retailer locations. Catalog data is the foundation of our marketplace: when attributes are complete and accurate, search returns the right results, recommendations feel personal, and advertisers can target with confidence. In this role, you’ll lead a team of engineers building systems that blend large language models, classical inference, workflow orchestration, and human review into configurable pipelines that non-engineers can run. You’ll also own the ML-facing interfaces to catalog data, including policies that govern how attributes are sourced, shared, and licensed across downstream models and customer surfaces. You will partner closely with ML, product, operations, search, ads, and retailer teams to drive measurable impact across Instacart’s ecosystem. ABOUT THE JOB This is a fast-paced, highly cross-functional environment. You’ll thrive if you enjoy building platforms at scale, turning ambiguity into clarity, and mentoring engineers while rolling up your sleeves on hard technical problems. * Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers who build the platform, pipelines, and interfaces that power catalog enrichment and ML access to catalog data. * Define and execute the technical roadmap, balancing new platform investments with reliability, observability, and developer experience for a growing user base. * Build and operate an AI-native enrichment platform that blends LLMs, classical ML, rules, workflow orchestration, and human review into pipelines non-engineers can configure and run. * Drive the evolution toward autonomous pipeline construction, where users express goals in plain language and the system assembles, evaluates, and optimizes workflows. * Own the ML-facing catalog data layer, including canonical product metadata and the policy controls that separate internal model inputs from customer-facing use cases. * Partner with ML, search, ads, commerce, and retailer teams to streamline data flows end to end and remove integration friction. * Advocate for clear, human-readable controls for source prioritization, rights management, licensing, and compliance to ensure auditable governance. * Boost developer and operator productivity via AI-assisted integration testing, investigation tooling, and on-call automation; set and meet SLAs on core attributes and model usage. * Contribute hands-on to architecture discussions, design reviews, and code reviews, especially in new or exploratory areas. ABOUT YOU MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years managing engineers as a people leader. * Experience leading teams that build and operate production data or ML platforms, including both batch and streaming components. * Strong foundation in distributed systems, data pipelines, and workflow orchestration, with demonstrated build/buy/partner decision-making. * Ownership of data quality, coverage, or compliance commitments, with examples of frameworks and processes used to meet them. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical work for diverse audiences. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with catalog, commerce, or product data platforms operating at large scale. * Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration systems (e.g., Temporal, Airflow, Flink) and running them in production. * Experience shipping applied AI/ML features in production and understanding trade-offs across LLMs, classical ML, deterministic rules, and human review. * Proven success partnering across ML, product, and operations to deliver outcomes that require alignment and shared goals. * Familiarity with data governance, rights management, and licensing controls in multi-stakeholder environments. * Experience building pipeline builders, low-code/no-code tooling, or internal platforms used by non-engineers. * Background in developer productivity tooling, including AI-assisted testing and investigation workflows. * Success operating in fast-growing environments where both the platform and team are evolving. #LI-Remote Instacart provides highly market-competitive compensation and benefits in each location where our employees work. Learn more about our flexible approach to where we work. OVERVIEW Instacart is the North American leader in online grocery and one of the fastest-growing companies in e-commerce. Since 2012, we've been working toward creating a world where everyone has access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. Behind every seamless order is a foundation of complex systems working in perfect coordination and the Order Experience team is at the heart of it all. The Order Experience team owns some of the most mission-critical infrastructure at Instacart, including checkout architecture, order management, and post-order quality. These systems sit at the intersection of nearly every major product initiative across the company, making this team a foundational dependency for how Instacart delivers value to customers, shoppers, retailers, and brand partners alike. We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead this team of 8+ engineers and bring both strategic vision and hands-on technical leadership to a domain where reliability, scalability, and conversion all matter. This is a role for someone who thrives in complexity, knows how to balance long-term platform thinking with near-term shipping, and can navigate a high-volume, cross-functional environment with clarity and confidence. ABOUT THE JOB * Lead and grow an engineering organization of 8+ engineers responsible for checkout architecture, order management, and post-order quality. These systems are foundational to Instacart's core customer experience and directly impact conversion and reliability at scale. * Serve as the primary engineering point of contact for 10+ partner teams across the organization, managing high-volume intake, setting clear prioritization frameworks, and ensuring Order Experience remains a reliable, well-scoped dependency for every major launch at Instacart. * Drive platform thinking across the team by identifying opportunities to rebuild and modernize foundational systems without sacrificing the pace of shipping customer-facing value, and making principled trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term architectural health. * Own engineering execution end to end: from roadmap alignment and technical strategy to team health, hiring, and career development for a high-performing group of engineers navigating a fast-moving, high-stakes domain. * Partner closely with product, design, data science, and cross-functional engineering leaders to define the future of order infrastructure to influence how Instacart scales its checkout and fulfillment systems as the business continues to grow. ABOUT YOU MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in an engineering management role leading teams of 8 or more engineers * Demonstrated experience owning and scaling backend systems in a high-traffic, production environment, including systems related to e-commerce, order management, checkout, or similar transactional domains * Proven ability to manage complex cross-functional dependencies across multiple partner teams simultaneously, with strong prioritization and stakeholder communication skills * Experience driving technical roadmaps that balance platform modernization with continuous product delivery in a fast-paced environment * Track record of hiring, retaining, and developing engineering talent, including performance management and career growth conversations PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience in a high-growth e-commerce or marketplace company where engineering systems are directly tied to revenue and conversion outcomes * Familiarity with checkout or payment infrastructure, order lifecycle management, or post-order quality systems at scale * Strong platform and systems thinking, experience leading architectural migrations or re-platforming efforts while maintaining system reliability and team velocity * Comfort operating as a force multiplier across a large, distributed organization where your team's systems enable the work of many others #LI-Remote Instacart provides highly market-competitive compensation and benefits in each location where our employees work. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with ranking and personalization at scale: multi-stage rankers, multi-task deep models, embeddings, and real-time/session-based features. * Experience operating low-latency, high-throughput services with strict SLAs, including on-call and reliability ownership. * Experience leading a 0→1 or ambiguous product area, and driving alignment across teams where ownership boundaries are still forming. * Experience working with LLMs in production, and with experimentation/A-B testing infrastructure. * Exposure to two-sided marketplaces, e-commerce, or ads-adjacent ranking problems. #LI-Remote Instacart provides highly market-competitive compensation and benefits in each location where our employees work.
