Your responsibilities Create concept design for our control and protection systems. Develop new business driven solutions within the domain of FACTS technology. Make architectural decisions on the existing and future product base. Coordinating with control platform supplier to ensure the compatibility of software and hardware and tools. Take new ideas from start to finish line, including offline studies, all the way to testing versus simulator or lab setups. Work in our agile teams to provide our delivery organization with new feature and applications. Your background You hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or similar As minimum 7 years relevant competence and experience within Control or electrical design. It is highly advantageous if you have worked with the MACH-platform previously. Experience in configuration management is advantageous You are a driven problem solver who eagerly takes initiative and always delivers on time and according to expectations. As a Principal Infrastructure Engineer at Toast, you will lead the architecture of systems powering our developer ecosystem and software delivery lifecycle. A day in the life (Responsibilities)  * Define and drive the architecture of the end-to-end developer experience across source control (GHES), developer portal (Backstage), engineering metadata, and CI/CD systems * Optimize developer tooling to enhance engineering productivity, accelerate feedback loops, and reduce friction across the SDLC * Own and evolve the developer portal as the central system for service discovery, documentation, and workflow orchestration * Design and improve CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and release processes to increase reliability, security, and delivery speed * Architect the developer platform to serve both human developers and AI agents, maintaining the guardrails that make both safe to operate at scale * Use telemetry and insights to identify opportunities and drive measurable improvements in developer experience * Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to advance shift-left methodologies and promote a fail-fast engineering culture * Lead through influence across multiple teams and reporting lines, setting technical direction and driving adoption of platform standards without direct authority What you'll need to thrive (Requirements) * Deep software engineering background building platforms, developer tooling, or software delivery systems * Experience working with systems like GitHub Enterprise, Backstage or similar portals, and CI/CD platforms at scale * Strong understanding of developer workflows across the software development lifecycle * Ability to design systems that span multiple tools, teams, and stages of the SDLC * Track record of improving developer productivity or engineering effectiveness at scale * Demonstrated ability to drive adoption of technical standards across teams you do not control * Experience building or scaling internal developer platforms * Familiarity with artifact management, dependency management, and release governance * Experience using data and telemetry to improve engineering workflows * Strong working expereince in languages such as Go, Java, and Kotlin   AI at Toast At Toast, one of our company values is that we're hungry to build and learn. A day in the life (Responsibilities) * Define and drive the technical architecture for AI Foundations platform, spanning backend services, frontend tooling, and third party integrations * Lead full-stack design and delivery across the LLM proxy, AI key management, observability pipelines, and internal plugin marketplace * Architect and deliver autonomous agents and MCP services that participate in the software development lifecycle * Set and uphold engineering standards across the team: code quality, system design, testing, and operational practices * Mentor and technically lead engineers across all levels through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing * Partner with product and platform leadership to shape the AI Foundations roadmap and translate strategy into executable technical plans * Collaborate closely with designers and product teams to translate UX concepts into polished, production-ready frontend experiences * Serve as a key technical voice in cross-team discussions, representing AI Foundations in architecture decisions across Toast engineering What you'll need to thrive (Requirements) * 10+ years of experience designing and delivering scalable software systems, with a strong full-stack background spanning backend services and frontend or developer-facing interfaces * Demonstrated experience leading technical architecture for a platform, product, or engineering team * Proven ability to mentor engineers and raise the technical bar of a team through standards, reviews, and hands-on guidance * Experience building, deploying, or operating LLM-powered agents or AI platform infrastructure * Familiarity with AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) and experience extending them through custom plugins, skills, or hooks * Experience with MCP, tool use patterns, or agentic frameworks * Strong foundation in modern backend (Java, Kotlin, or similar) and frontend (TypeScript, React, or similar) technologies, with demonstrated experience building user-facing product interfaces * Comfort with a rapidly changing technical landscape and a bias towards action over analysis paralysis What will make you stand out * Familiarity with A2A (Agent-to-Agent) protocols and multi-agent orchestration patterns * Experience with machine learning concepts, model evaluation, or ML infrastructure * Experience building developer experience platforms or internal tooling * Familiarity with observability tooling for AI/LLM systems (e.g., Langfuse, DataDog) **This role requires a minimum of two days per week in our Dublin office** AI at Toast At Toast, one of our company values is that we're hungry to build and learn.
