ABOUT THIS ROLE The Weaviate Database is the open-source engine behind how developers store, search, and work with AI-native data. It’s the foundation that Weaviate Cloud, Query Agent, and Engram are built on. As the product lead, you'll own direction across the full stack: storage and schema, production scale, developer integrations, and search quality. You'll be the connective tissue between engineering and the business, translating customer needs into requirements, sequencing work across teams, and making sure what ships lands well in market. You care as much about why customers need something as what they're asking for, and you'll push back when the ask doesn't match the underlying problem. You bring structure to ambiguity without creating bureaucracy, and you treat a clear roadmap as a forcing function for good decisions, not a planning ritual. You're a strong communicator, moving fluidly between customer discovery, cross-team coordination, and GTM partnership. RESPONSIBILITIES Own Roadmap and Strategy * Own the Weaviate Database roadmap: prioritize across engineering teams, make tradeoffs explicit, and keep the plan grounded in customer reality * Partner with Weaviate Cloud teams to ensure the database roadmap surfaces the capabilities they depend on * Define success metrics for major features and track outcomes post-ship Build and Scale Weaviate Core * Drive product direction across schema, storage, filtering, replication, cluster topology, and migrations * Translate customer and operational pain into clear requirements and sequence dependency-heavy work across releases Ship Cutting-Edge Capabilities * Translate applied research outcomes for search quality, compression, and new retrieval modes into shippable features with clear use cases * Ensure new capabilities are positioned around real customer problems, not just technical novelty Empower Developer Adoption * Shape how developers integrate with and build on Weaviate with MCP, client SDKs, and future integrations * Run ongoing discovery with developers and enterprise customers to reduce time-to-value and bring customer context into engineering * Partner with GTM to ensure new capabilities ship with the positioning needed to land well REQUIREMENTS * 5+ years of product management experience, with at least 2 years on a developer-facing or infrastructure product * Proven ability to own a complex technical roadmap across multiple workstreams * Strong written communication skills, both verbal and written * Experience running customer discovery and translating qualitative signal into product decisions * Comfortable working in distributed systems or data infrastructure domains * Track record of cross-functional collaboration across engineering, design, and GTM NICE-TO-HAVES * Experience with databases, search infrastructure, or AI/ML developer tooling * Familiarity with vector search, embeddings, or RAG workflows * Experience at a developer tools or open source company * Background working with enterprise customers alongside a self-serve or community motion WHAT WE OFFER * 100% remote with flexible work hours. * Competitive compensation, including paid time off. * Budget available to spend on going to conferences, co-working space, home office equipment, etc. * Work with very experienced and fun team members. * An atmosphere that encourages learning and personal growth, and that gives you lots of freedom, flexibility, and responsibilities. * You will work at the forefront of search, ML/AI, and cloud-native technologies - and all of it is open source. Who is PawaPay PawaPay is a pan-African fintech enabling local payment channels used by the mass market to both local and international merchants. Our vision is to simplify business for companies and consumers in Africa and we do that by ensuring that payments simply work, at scale, despite fragmentation and complexity that exists on the Continent. Through our payments API we already facilitate over 4 million transactions a day across 20 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are the largest PSP on the Continent for the processing of mobile money payments, and have positioned ourselves well to lead the payment space as it grows over the next decade. THE ROLE We are looking for a Head of Merchant Experience to build and lead a new Merchant Experience (MX) function within Product. This is a senior product leadership role responsible for every stage of the merchant journey — from a merchant's first interaction with pawaPay through onboarding, integration, live operations and long-term growth. Today, many parts of the merchant experience are owned by different teams across the business. Your mission is to bring those experiences together into a single, coherent strategy, roadmap and operating model. You'll lead a multidisciplinary team spanning product, design, engineering, AI and QA, working closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Sales, Operations and Customer Success to make pawaPay the easiest payments platform in Africa to discover, integrate and operate. As AI increasingly changes how software is built and consumed, you'll also help shape experiences that work equally well for human users and the AI-powered tools and agents that increasingly interact with payment infrastructure. WHAT YOU'LL DO Build and lead the Merchant Experience function * Define the vision, strategy and roadmap for MX as a new product discipline. * Hire and lead a high-performing team across product, design, engineering and AI. * Establish the operating rhythms, metrics and accountability structures that make the function run. * Create a single MX scorecard that gives the business clear, consistent visibility into merchant health. Own the merchant journey end-to-end * Take full ownership of the merchant lifecycle: discovery, onboarding, integration, live operations, growth and expansion. * Drive measurable improvements in activation, adoption, engagement and retention. * Identify and eliminate friction at every stage of the journey. * Partner closely with Marketing, Sales and Operations so that no merchant falls through the cracks. Build product experiences merchants actually love * Lead the evolution of the merchant dashboard, onboarding flows, documentation and support experience. * Champion quality, usability and design that respects the merchant's time and intelligence. * Push self-serve as a first principle — without sacrificing the quality of support when it's needed. * Partner with Engineering to raise the bar on developer experience, APIs and integration workflows. Use AI where it genuinely matters * Identify high-leverage opportunities to apply AI across onboarding, support, analytics and merchant productivity. * Help define what world-class AI-enabled merchant experiences look like in the payments context. * Ensure AI-powered experiences are trustworthy, measurable and built for the regulatory environments we operate in. * Think ahead: how will agent-driven interactions with payment infrastructure reshape the merchant relationship? WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Required * 10+ years across Product, Customer Experience, Platform or Digital Product leadership. * 4+ years leading multidisciplinary teams. * A proven track record of improving customer or user experiences at real scale. * Experience owning commercial outcomes — activation, retention, conversion, cost-to-serve. * Strong product and technology fluency; you can go deep with engineering when it counts. * Excellent communicator, written and verbal. * Comfortable with ambiguity and energised by the challenge of building something new. WE NEED YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: * Advanced English with strong business communication skills; * 3+ years of experience in Business Development or similar role within PSP/payments industry; * 1+ year of team leadership experience; * Experience communicating with international partners and C-level stakeholders; * Understanding of: online payment systems and integrations, payment funnels and flows, KYC, AML, and compliance procedures, contractual relations and financial processes; * Proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, SimilarWeb, task tracking, and cloud storage tools.
