Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run. In addition to Nyx, we are actively developing Typhoon, the largest full-flow staged combustion engine ever to be built in Europe. We are looking for a talented Senior Additive Manufacturing Materials Engineer to join our mission and contribute significantly to the development and in-house production of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies for our propulsion products powering all our space vehicles. ROLE OVERVIEW The ideal candidate will play a key role in the qualification and development of AM processes, including the definition and characterization of print parameters for new materials on larger, more productive machines. This role also involves supporting the certification of AM components to meet high industry standards, including NASA regulations. You will help implement large-scale Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes and develop functionally graded or bi-metallic components. This is a versatile position with broad hands-on responsibilities in additive manufacturing reporting to TEC's Lead for AM. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Develop and execute materials development and maturation plans for new processes using established alloys, and for existing processes with new alloys. * Serve as a Materials Engineer for AM projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams to support the development and production of innovative components and systems. * Operate AM machines in a development environment as needed. * Assist in the development of new alloys for AM, including maturation of atomization methods and creation of powder specifications. * Support the qualification and testing of AM processes to ensure compliance with industry standards and performance requirements. * Responsible for onsite materials and powder characterization equipment & laboratory, including selection of equipment, budget for consumables and maintenance, training and standard operating procedures. * Collaborate on the certification of AM processes and parts, particularly those required to meet NASA and aerospace standards. * Develop post-process heat treatment procedures and specifications. * Document results and contribute to technical reports and procedures related to AM process qualification and development. * Troubleshoot and improve AM processes for enhanced performance and reliability. * Stay up to date with the latest advancements in AM technologies and materials. * Act as an onsite quality organization delegate. QUALIFICATIONS * Engineering degree in Materials Science , Metallurgy, Welding or a related field. * Experience with AM processes such as laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition. * Strong knowledge of material properties, behavior, testing, and characterization—especially metals used in aerospace propulsion applications. * Familiarity with additive manufacturing standards, including NASA or aerospace industry standards, is highly desirable. * Experience working in an ISO 9001 or similar manufacturing environment producing and delivering hardware. * Extreme sense of ownership and responsibility for work assigned, striving to complete on-time , exceptional quality, and under budget. * Strong analytical skills and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. * Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in both internal and external teams. * Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to a dynamic work environment. PREFERRED SKILLS * Experience with materials modeling, including microstructure and property prediction. * Proficiency in CAD and simulation software (e.g., NX Suite, ANSYS). * Familiarity with process qualification and statistical analysis tools. * Knowledge of quality control methodologies for AM parts, including non-destructive testing (NDT). At The Exploration Company, we are developing Huracan, a throttleable cryogenic rocket engine designed for lunar landing applications. Huracan brings together a wide range of highly integrated technologies that must operate reliably and with high precision under demanding conditions. To retain full control over the engine’s performance and technical development, we design its key technologies in-house, including the electric pumps, power electronics, embedded software, and control systems used to operate critical engine functions. We are seeking a Power Electronics Control Engineer to join the propulsion team developing Huracan. In this role, you will take ownership of the control strategy for the engine’s electrically driven systems, from modelling and simulation through implementation and experimental validation. We want you to help us achieve reliable and high-performance operation of these critical systems. This hands-on position combines technical leadership, practical problem-solving, multidisciplinary collaboration, and active involvement in laboratory testing. Key Responsibilities * Lead the definition and development of control architectures and strategies for the electric motors used within our cryogenic propulsion systems, including operating modes, interfaces, and protection functions. * Develop system models and simulations to design and assess control algorithms, system performance, stability, and robustness across the expected operating range. * Translate control concepts into system-level and embedded software requirements, working closely with software and hardware engineers throughout implementation, integration, optimization, and verification. * Plan and perform MIL, SIL, HIL, and laboratory testing; analyze the resulting data, identify performance limitations, and continuously improve the control approach. * Support the commissioning and validation of internally developed power-electronics and electric-drive systems, ensuring their successful integration into the complete engine. * Contribute to technical documentation, design reviews, verification activities, and the continuous improvement of engineering processes. What we would love to see from you * A BSc or higher degree in electrical engineering, control systems engineering, aerospace engineering, robotics, or a related field. * At least two years of experience developing, validating, or troubleshooting control systems for electric drives, power-electronic systems, or other dynamic systems. * Strong knowledge of control theory, dynamic-system modelling, and simulation, with experience developing control strategies for electric motors and power-electronic systems. * Practical experience with motor-control techniques, including field-oriented control, current, speed and position regulation, modulation, and observer-based control. * Proficiency with modelling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink/PLECS, together with an understanding of embedded real-time constraints and the implementation of control algorithms in production software. * Experience with laboratory testing, measurement equipment, data analysis, and system debugging, as well as the ability to translate control concepts into clear requirements and collaborate effectively with embedded software engineers. * Experience in aerospace, propulsion, automotive, robotics, energy, industrial automation, or another safety-critical or high-reliability field would be highly relevant. * A proactive, adaptable, and delivery-focused mindset, with a hands-on and practical approach to solving problems in a fast-changing environment. * Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with a consistent commitment to safety, quality, and reliable execution. * The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with colleagues and partners in English. Your profile We're looking for an experienced engineering leader who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to inspire, develop, and engage others. To succeed in this role, you have: A Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical field. At least 10 years of experience in testing automotive cooling components or similar automotive systems. A minimum of 5 years' experience leading teams, managing budgets, and driving operational performance. Good knowledge of automotive quality standards such as IATF 16949 and management systems including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
