Valarian: Innovating for the new era of digital sovereignty
Valarian Technologies is a dual-use technology company building critical tools to safeguard the future in an era of evolving global security challenges. We're rethinking security beyond traditional military domains, addressing asymmetric threats that impact our technological advantage, economic strength, and democratic institutions.
We build Acra – the platform foundation for everything we do as a dual-use technology company. The platform’s name, rooted in the Greek word for citadel (or, fortress), reflects the design and purpose of our infrastructure-agnostic secure enclaves: protecting critical data. Some of the government and commercial workflows include: increased operational resiliency for mission-critical systems and functions; enabling organisations to more quickly and widely adopt emerging technologies while ensuring the integrity of their intellectual property; information flow during disaster response scenarios, and zero-trust / least-privilege environments for M&A, attorney-client privileged communications, etc. And we’ve only scratched the surface.
At our core, we're driven by a shared mission and a belief in making a tangible impact on our world. Whether you join our London HQ or the wider global organisation, you’ll be a part of collaborative, high-performing teams, creating cutting-edge software, platforms, and infrastructure.
The Role
We are looking for a hands-on Paralegal to join our growing team. This is a broad, high-ownership role in an early-stage business where the legal and compliance function is actively being scaled.
You will support the day-to-day running of legal operations while helping introduce better controls, clearer processes, stronger contract governance, and more efficient risk management. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys operating in a fast-moving environment, takes initiative, and wants to help build the legal foundations of a scaling technology company.
You will be expected to roll up your sleeves, keep the core workflows moving, spot legal or compliance risks, streamline processes, and help create operational discipline across the business.
What you’ll do
Commercial Contracts & Support
Review, draft, and negotiate standard commercial agreements, including NDAs, vendor contracts, SaaS agreements, and statements of work.
Maintain and manage the central contract database/CLM, tracking key dates, renewals, rights, and business obligations.
Help update and maintain standard company templates, playbooks, and fallback language.
Legal Operations & Governance
Help design, embed, and manage processes and workflows.
Maintain accurate corporate records, minute books, and legal documentation.
Coordinate cross-functionality with HR, Finance, and Security/Product teams.
Identify workflow bottlenecks, repeated questions, and process gaps, then help build legal self-serve tools or checklists for non-lawyers.
Compliance & Regulatory Research
Conduct targeted legal research on statutory, regulatory, and compliance matters relevant to software, data privacy, and dual-use tech.
Support data protection initiatives (eg. GDPR) and security compliance reviews.
Synthesise complex legal findings into clear, digestible guidance for internal business stakeholders.
Assist with preparation for investor reporting, board packs, or corporate transactions (eg. due diligence datarooms) as required.
What you’ll bring
1–3 years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or junior legal associate (in-house or at a top-tier law firm).
Experience in a startup, scale-up, or technology/fast-moving environment is highly desirable.
A strong foundation in commercial contract principles, legal drafting, and general corporate law.
Education: English Law degree (LL.B / Senior Status Law), GDL/SQE/LPC, or equivalent relevant paralegal qualification/experience.
Comfortable working in an environment where legal playbooks and processes are not yet perfect and where you will need to help build them.
Strong attention to detail and a high level of personal accountability when managing legal risk and sensitive data.
Confident following up with stakeholders across the business to get contract approvals, signatures, and legal inputs completed.
Tech-savvy: Experience with Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) tools, e-signature tools (e.g. DocuSign), modern knowledge hubs (e.g. Notion, Confluence), and office software.

The Company We’re Octopus Legacy: one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country, part of the UK’s most exciting and best-trusted group (you may have heard of some of our sister companies…) and we have a mission. We’re on a path to scale, aiming to become a household name while transforming an outdated industry and helping our customers prepare for, and find support after, death. But we can’t do it alone, and that’s why we’re assembling a team of top performers to build with us. Ready to be part of something big? THE ROLE We’re looking for a commercial lawyer to support the company on commercial and contract matters, assist the legal team with compliance, and handle a variety of ad hoc day-to-day legal issues. This is a new role reporting to our Head of Legal. While the focus will be on drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts and agreements, the fast-paced, dynamic nature of our business means you’ll gain exposure to a broad spectrum of challenging legal topics. This role is also ideal for an experienced paralegal looking to take the next step into a commercial in-house role. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Support procurement processes: Drafting and reviewing contracts with third parties. * Support partnerships: Drafting and assisting with the negotiation of contracts with partners (e.g., charities, employers, IFAs). * Identify potential legal and business risks in proposed operations and advise stakeholders on how to successfully navigate or mitigate them. * Contract management: Oversee contracts throughout their lifecycle, from drafting and negotiation through to variations, change orders, innovations and renewal. * Act as a key point of contact for stakeholders across the business on contract, commercial and corporate law matters (with the support of the Head of Legal), handling ad hoc queries. * Advise on and maintain our suite of contract templates and assist with bespoke drafting. * Conduct legal research on issues relevant to the business. * Assist the legal and compliance function in ensuring the company complies with applicable laws and regulations. We take these cold processes and turn them into something more human, letting people share more than money: voice notes, music, recipes. A legacy that connects them while they're here, and after they're gone. Founded by Sam after his mum died suddenly, we're a group of people who work in death because we've been affected by it. We know the difference a good plan makes, and what it's like when there isn't one. We see a world where people talk openly about death and work out the real meaning of legacy, one that connects to them. We're here to make that world happen.
