Our technology stack: Python (including FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, OpenTelemetry, procrastinate, Uvicorn), Postgres, MySQL, Liquibase, Retool, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, Git, RESTful APIs, and cloud infrastructure on AWS, GCP, or Azure. Our existing frontend stack includes Angular and TypeScript. Who you are: * Seven or more years of professional experience in software engineering * Strong proficiency in Python, including writing well-structured async code, type hints, and unit tests * Experience building backend services using frameworks such as FastAPI * Strong SQL skills with experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL * Experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs * Experience building or maintaining automation and integrations that support financial or operational workflows * Experience working with message queues or background job systems * Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows * Experience working with containerised environments such as Docker and CI/CD pipelines * Basic knowledge of cloud infrastructure, with hands-on experience in at least one of AWS, GCP, or Azure * Comfortable collaborating directly with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions * Comfortable working in fast-paced environments where accuracy, reliability, and clear communication are essential * Experience maintaining codebases for business-critical systems * Practical interest in applying AI tools and LLM-based capabilities to real product or operational problems * Experience integrating third-party AI APIs or building AI-assisted internal tools is a strong plus * Ability to evaluate where AI adds value, and where conventional software or workflow automation is the better solution * Knowledge of lending products and lending operations is a major advantage * Awareness of financial concepts, accounting flows, or reconciliation processes is a plus What you'll be doing: * Design and develop new Python services and backend features that automate and support core financial operations, such as payments, reconciliations, and reporting * Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from design and implementation to testing, deployment, and monitoring * Own part of the platform and be responsible for the smooth operation of associated business processes and their KPIs * Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and business users to understand, challenge, and refine requirements * Provide second-line support during business hours, helping to troubleshoot and resolve system issues that impact customers * Support junior engineers through PR reviews and pairing * Apply strong SQL skills to troubleshoot and improve the performance of data management and retrieval across our databases * Identify opportunities to use AI in pragmatic ways, whether to improve internal tooling, automate manual workflows, or enhance product capabilities * Build and maintain AI-assisted features and integrations in a reliable, observable, and cost-conscious way * Work with stakeholders to prototype, test, and iterate on AI-enabled workflows, while keeping a strong engineering bar for quality, safety, and maintainability * Help establish practical patterns for using AI in production, including structured outputs, evaluation, fallback handling, and human review where appropriate What we offer: * Everyone owns a piece of the company - equity * Hybrid with 3 days a week in the office * 25 days’ holiday a year, plus 8 bank holidays * 2 paid volunteering days per year * One month paid sabbatical after 4 years * Employee loan * Free gym membership * Team wellness budget to be active together - set up a yoga class, a tennis lesson or go bouldering

With strong market traction, we're growing our engineering team. About the Role We're looking for a senior engineer to join our small, collaborative engineering team. This is a hands-on role where you'll be designing and building the systems that power our platform, while helping set the technical direction for how we grow. You'll be a go-to person for architectural decisions and a mentor to the engineers around you. We're after someone who's as comfortable pairing with a junior developer as they are making calls on system design. You don't need to have used every part of our stack. What matters most is that you're experienced, pick things up quickly, and enjoy getting stuck into hard problems. What You'll Be Working With Our stack includes TypeScript, React, and React Query on the frontend, with AWS Lambda, Node.js, and PostgreSQL on the backend, running on AWS cloud infrastructure. You'll work across both sides of the stack, so comfort in either direction matters. We care more about how you think and approach problems than whether you've used every tool in this list before. What You'll Be Doing Technical Leadership You'll play a key role in shaping how we build things. That means owning architectural decisions, identifying the right trade-offs between speed and sustainability, and making sure our systems are reliable and performant. You'll contribute to our product roadmap from a technical perspective and help the team navigate complex dependencies and risks. Building This isn't a role where you stop writing code. You'll be hands-on daily, delivering high-quality solutions across the stack, improving our development workflows, and tackling the harder problems that come with a growing platform. Growing the Team You'll mentor engineers across the team, helping them develop their skills and confidence. You'll also be involved in recruitment, from screening candidates and reviewing code challenges to helping shape how we onboard new joiners. Communicating You'll regularly translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders. Being able to explain the "why" behind decisions clearly and calmly is a big part of this role. What We're Looking For You'll likely have: * Strong commercial experience designing and building systems across the full stack in production * Deep experience with TypeScript, Node.js, SQL, and relational databases * Solid experience with React or similar frontend frameworks * Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS and serverless architectures * A track record leading the delivery of complex technical projects and bringing others along with you * A thoughtful approach to system design, making pragmatic choices that balance quality with pace * The ability to communicate well and work effectively across different disciplines It'd be great if you have, but it's not essential: * Experience building or scaling SaaS products * Familiarity with event-driven architectures * A background working with integration-heavy platforms * An interest in security best practices We're more interested in how you approach problems than how long you've been doing it.
