The Senior Payroll Accountant plays a critical role in executing the day-to-day and month-end accounting tasks associated with Databricks' global payroll. As part of the Global Accounting organization and reporting directly to the Payroll Accounting Manager based in India, you will tackle complex reconciliations, execute detailed variance analysis, and drive process improvements. The ideal candidate is a highly analytical self-starter with a keen eye for detail who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. The impact you will have: * Prepare and record comprehensive payroll journal entries, including salaries, bonuses, commissions, stock-based compensation, benefits, and multi-state/international taxes. * Prepare accurate monthly balance sheet reconciliations for assigned accounts, proactively identifying and resolving any variances or discrepancies within the close period. * Perform monthly payroll flux analysis, identifying and investigating drivers behind significant period-over-period movements. * Prepare payroll accounting for equity compensation programs such as RSUs, stock options, and ESPP, ensuring accurate recording, tax withholding treatment, and reconciliation between equity, payroll, and the general ledger. * Execute payroll accounting across global entities, with exposure to high-complexity jurisdictions, including Netherlands, Brazil, France, Germany, and India, ensuring accurate accounting treatment and local compliance. * Partner closely with the Payroll Operations team to research and resolve discrepancies between the payroll register and the general ledger. * Support annual local statutory audits, consolidated external audits, and internal SOX requests; help maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures (SOPs). * Partner with the Manager and cross-functional teams (Legal, External Advisors) to set up accounting processes and systems for new international subsidiaries and locations. * Lead testing and implementation of updates to cloud-based payroll and accounting systems; perform ad hoc financial analysis and drive process improvement projects to increase efficiency. * Support AI and automation initiatives across payroll accounting, including reconciliation tooling, variance detection, and process improvements that reduce manual work. GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY The Investment Accountant promotes effective investment accounting and reporting information by applying appropriate accounting and reporting principles and practices in partnership with internal and external customers to achieve the Organization’s goals. This position requires foundational knowledge for all types of investments appropriate for insurance companies including bonds, stocks, mortgage loans, real estate and other invested assets. Prepares certain statutory quarterly and annual financial statement schedules and exhibits with an emphasis on the Mortgage, Real Estate and Other Invested Asset related reports. Processes acquisitions, payments and disposals for all mortgage loans, real estate and other long-term assets. Processes depreciation for all real estate, performs a variety of routine and some non-routine accounting functions in accordance with developed procedures for all investment related activity to ensure that the Organization’s investments are properly accounted for and in compliance with regulatory and statutory accounting requirements. TRAVEL (% OF WORK PERIOD) N/A ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Processes accounting and performs record keeping functions for all real estate, mortgage loan and other long-term assets in accordance with established procedures. This includes modal payments, disposals, maturities, acquisitions and capitalized improvements. Prepares monthly depreciation for all real estate records and maintains all records associated with that process. Pays all real estate taxes and ensures that properties have been adequately insured. * Serves as primary backup for the Financial Accountant, performing accounting and record keeping functions for securities (bonds, stocks, mutual funds, hybrid securities, derivatives) in accordance with established procedures. Reconciles related general ledger accounts with their investment administration system and performs other account analysis. Includes the ability to prepare the related exhibits and schedules for the statutory quarterly and annual statements, separate accounts statement and other internal financial reports in the absence of the Financial Accountant. * Prepares financial reporting exhibits and schedules for the statutory quarterly and annual statements. * Prepares mortgage and real estate related schedules for the organization’s internal and external audits and examinations and drafts responses to questions regarding those schedules. * Reconciles a variety of general ledger accounts, real estate operating reports and invested asset activity, performs other analysis and reports on the same. * Processes morning Unit Value Trade transactions in accordance with established procedures and updates various variable annuity balance control sheets. Maintains and coordinates the morning trade calendar for appropriate staffing. Performs daily FTP upload of certain vital records of the Variable Annuity, subsidiaries and Foundation for business resumption purposes. * Prepares reports for certain state insurance departments, regulatory agencies, rating agencies or external users of the statutory quarterly and annual statements. Process includes analyzing product statistics (certificates in force, premium, claims, etc.) on a state-by-state basis, obtaining necessary signatures, notarized documents, preparing cover letters and ensuring compliance by the proscribed due dates. Also maintains an Access database that houses the state filing requirements. * Develops software testing procedures, documents and communicates them verbally and in writing. * Tests and implements general releases, enhancements and program corrections for PLM-Mortgages software. We are in the process of establishing an Accounting Center of Excellence (COE) to strengthen our global accounting capabilities and provide a scalable foundation for the future. The COE will focus on consistency, accuracy, and efficiency across accounting processes, while ensuring compliance with regulatory and audit requirements. It will also drive process improvements, automation, and knowledge sharing across regions. As Fixed Asset COE Lead, you will own the end-to-end accounting for property, plant & equipment (PP&E), leases, internally developed software (IDS), goodwill and other intangible assets across the Thoughtworks global. You will be accountable for technical accuracy, SOX compliance, and the continuous improvement of fixed asset accounting processes — while mentoring and developing a high-performing team. You will collaborate closely with Regional Controllers, FP&A, Tax, Legal, and IT Finance stakeholders to deliver a scalable, compliant, and insight-driven fixed asset function. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES FIXED ASSET ACCOUNTING & CLOSE * Own the global fixed asset accounting lifecycle — from capitalization through depreciation, impairment, and disposal — ensuring accurate and timely recognition in compliance with US GAAP (ASC 360, ASC 350), IFRS 16, and internal accounting policies. * Lead monthly close activities for PP&E, ROU assets, and intangibles, including journal entries, depreciation runs, asset additions/disposals, and reconciliations. * Review and approve balance sheet reconciliations for all fixed asset accounts, ensuring complete documentation, proper support, and adherence to SOX control requirements. * Oversee lease accounting under IFRS 16 / ASC 842, including ROU asset recognition, remeasurement, modification, and disclosure across all Thoughtworks legal entities. * Support acquisition accounting and integration activities, including participation in purchase price allocation (PPA) for PP&E and intangible assets, post-acquisition asset register set-up, and goodwill impairment indicator assessments in coordination with the Technical Accounting and FP&A teams. SOFTWARE CAPITALIZATION (IDS / ASC 350-40) * Manage the end-to-end capitalization process for internally developed software, including intake assessment, eligibility determination, cost accumulation, and amortization schedules. * Partner with IT and other teams to ensure accurate and timely identification of qualifying development activities and associated costs. * Maintain clear documentation and audit trails to support internal and external audit reviews of software capitalization decisions. COMPLIANCE, CONTROLS & AUDIT SUPPORT * Maintain and enforce global accounting policies for fixed assets and intangibles, ensuring consistent application and clear guidance for regional finance teams. * Design, operate, and monitor SOX/ICFR controls over the fixed asset cycle, including periodic physical verification coordination and impairment assessments. * Serve as the primary contact for internal and external auditors on all fixed asset and intangible-related queries, providing detailed analysis, documentation, and reconciliations. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT & AUTOMATION * Drive continuous improvement across fixed asset accounting workflows, identifying automation opportunities within ERP and asset management systems (PeopleSoft). * Lead standardization initiatives across regions — developing consistent templates, capitalization thresholds, useful life policies, and tagging conventions. * Contribute to the broader Accounting COE agenda by bringing best practices in fixed asset accounting and helping design scalable, globally consistent processes. STAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION & TEAM DEVELOPMENT * Collaborate with FP&A, Tax, Legal, Regional Controllers, SG&A team to ensure capital expenditure forecasting, tax depreciation, and CAPEX/OPEX classification are properly reflected. * Partner with FP&A, IT, Controllership and Treasury to forecast global CAPEX cash flows, aligning cash projections with IT and software development plans. * Partner with the Procurement and IT teams to establish and maintain an effective asset procurement-to-capitalization workflow. * Develop and mentor team members within the Fixed Asset COE, building technical depth and fostering a culture of accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement. JOB QUALIFICATIONS ESSENTIAL * Qualified CA, CPA, or CMA with 5–7 years of post-qualification experience in fixed asset accounting, technical accounting, or a controllership role. * Deep knowledge of US GAAP fixed asset standards (ASC 360, ASC 350-40) and IFRS 16 / ASC 842 lease accounting, with demonstrated experience applying them in a global environment. * Hands-on experience managing the full fixed asset cycle including capitalization, depreciation, impairment, and disposal in a multinational company. * Strong understanding of SOX/ICFR controls applicable to the fixed asset cycle. * Experience supporting internal and external audits, including preparation of detailed audit schedules and reconciliations. * Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; proficiency in working with ERP-generated data and large asset registers. * Proven track record in driving process standardization, continuous improvement, and supporting automation initiatives. * Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or developing team members in an accounting or shared services environment. * Strong written and verbal English communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate cross-functionally with global teams and senior stakeholders. * Willingness to align working hours with stakeholders in other time zones when required.
