Design, train, ship, iterate on, and innovate on the AI brains behind The Path’s AI Therapist. Combine research, data science, and
engineering to create models, orchestration, and evaluation systems that make therapy conversations deeply effective, clinically
grounded, and safe.
1. Improve quality of AI Therapy: Deliver measurable improvements in conversation quality, therapeutic alliance, and user
outcomes through fine-tuning strategies, training data curation, building RL environments, new model architectures and other
AI innovations.
2. Improve evaluation of AI quality: Improve on and maintain a robust eval stack that includes scripted tests, LLM-as-judge
evaluations, human ratings, and safety checks. Improve automated regression testing, detection of defects, and observability
(eg dashboards).
3. Own AI system. Build, maintain, and iterate on the production codebase that delivers AI therapy and supports the evaluation
and iteration of our AI.
4. Productionize Models and Pipelines. Own The Path from notebook to production: training jobs, model packaging, deployment,
monitoring, and rollback strategies. Keep latency, reliability, and cost within agreed budgets while enabling rapid iteration
on new ideas.
5. Improve Safety, Alignment, and Clinical Guardrails Work with clinicians and internal experts to encode clinical guidelines
into prompts, reward functions, tools, and filters. Proactively identify and reduce harmful or low-quality behaviors through
targeted experiments, red teaming, and mitigations.
6. Own Research Roadmap and Experiment Velocity Run high-quality experiments from hypothesis to analysis to improve our
understanding of what matters and what works. Shape and execute a focused R&D roadmap.
7. Collaboration with Clinicians, Product, and Engineering. Translate product and clinical requirements into concrete model and
system changes. Partner with full-stack product engineers so that new AI capabilities are easy to integrate and maintain in
the product.
1. LLM and Applied ML Depth. Demonstrates strong experience with large language models, including fine-tuning, training data
design, and model selection. Knows how to move core metrics on conversation quality and user outcomes, rather than chasing
generic benchmarks. Can look at evals, transcripts, and metrics and quickly form grounded hypotheses for improvement.
2. Ships clean, maintainable, quality code. No only do you know how transformers work, but you are also an engineer that has
experience shipping production-level code and/or maintaining an AI system in production.
3. Data Engineering Skills. Can set up production-level data pipelines for training new models, evals, analysis, etc.
4. Scientific Mindset. You formulate hypotheses, and you are good at evaluating them (eg through experiments, data analysis,
etc). You are consistently learning at the cutting edge, and you’re able to leverage and communicate those learnings to make
the entire company more successful.
5. Ruthless Prioritizer. You are keenly aware of how to provide company value and to prioritize projects accordingly. Resistant
to nerd-sniping.
6. Quality Obsessive: Refuses to ship subpar work, continuously improving the codebase.
7. Fast: Prioritizes speed by leveraging AI, breaking down complex tasks, shipping early, optimizing for learnings, iterating
quickly, and avoiding over-engineering.
8. Strong communicator. You can work collaboratively in a positive way. Sees others perspectives. Strong opinions, loosely held.
Focused on user/business value, not ego.
Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games. Discord exists to give people the power to create space to find belonging — to talk regularly with the people they care about and build genuine relationships with friends and communities close to home or around the world. We're looking for a Manager to lead our Scaled Abuse Countermeasures and Research (SCAR) team — Discord's first line of defense against scaled abuse. SCAR combines rapid incident response with deep threat research and signal generation across bulk fake account creation, login abuse, spam, scams, fraud, and other high-volume threats. This is an opportunity to reshape how the team operates: set a sharper strategy, stand up a structured research program, and lean heavily into ML and AI-powered automation to replace today's manual workflows. This role reports to the Director of Safety Automation. What You'll Be Doing * Lead and grow the SCAR team, a group of Scaled Abuse Scientists who serve as Discord's first line of defense against bulk fake account creation, login abuse, spam, scams, fraud, and other high-volume threats. * Set a vision for the team that leans heavily into automation — scale SCAR's impact by partnering with Safety ML on ML-driven detection and building AI-powered incident response workflows that increase the team's leverage and reduce manual work. * Define scaled abuse north-star metrics and build a roadmap and prioritization framework that keeps the team focused on the highest-impact problems. * Stand up a research program where the team operates as scientists: surface the most important questions about attacker operations and signals, then systematically answer them through structured research and experimentation. * Close the loop with Safety ML so that SCAR's signals feed directly into model features and pipeline upgrades, and tactical wins translate into long-term, automated countermeasures. * Partner cross-functionally with Product, Safety ML, Data Science, Policy, Legal, Trust & Safety, and Revenue, influencing safety-by-design decisions upstream so abuse is prevented, not just mitigated. * Coach, hire, and grow Scaled Abuse Scientists. * Communicate attacker dynamics, economic incentives, and trade-offs clearly to senior leadership. What you should have * 2+ years of people management experience leading technical teams, including engineers, ML engineers, data scientists, or applied researchers, or an equivalent track record of leading, mentoring, or coordinating technical work in a way that has prepared you to step into this role. * 4+ years of experience working on Trust & Safety, fraud, anti-abuse, or a closely adjacent adversarial domain at a consumer-scale platform. * Demonstrated ability to drive ML and automation adoption within a Trust & Safety or operations context. You don't need to build models yourself, but you need to understand them well enough to evaluate their quality, direct their development, and push a team toward automated solutions. * Strong analytical skills and fluency in SQL and Python for data investigation and pattern analysis (not full software engineering proficiency required). * Ability to think from first principles and apply behavioral-economics reasoning to adversarial systems: why are attackers doing this, what are the incentives, and what is the most cost-effective way to break their economics. * Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with a history of partnering effectively across engineering, ML, data science, policy, legal, and product teams. * A growth mindset: you seek feedback, reflect on decisions, and actively help your team do the same. Bonus Points * Experience leveraging LLMs or AI agents for incident response, investigation automation, or signal triage. * Experience tackling scaled abuse problems at large social platforms, marketplaces, or other high-volume consumer products. * Threat intelligence research background, including understanding of internet infrastructure and the tools and techniques attackers use. * A strong passion for Discord and/or gaming, and an appreciation for the communities we serve. * A relevant degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $220,000 to $275,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include benefits. Why Discord? Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We're a multiplatform, multigenerational and multiplayer platform that helps people deepen their friendships around games and shared interests, and helps developers build and grow their businesses. We believe games give us a way to have fun with our favorite people, whether listening to music together or grinding in competitive matches for diamond rank. Join us in our mission! We are seeking an experienced Safety Policy Lead to own Discord's youth safety policy portfolio. As a member of the Safety Policy team within Product Policy, you will drive policy development and lifecycle management across the full spectrum of youth safety harms: child sexual abuse material, grooming, and child exploitation. This role requires deep domain expertise, strong regulatory literacy, and the ability to translate complex child safety requirements into enforceable policy and durable implementation. This is a lifecycle ownership role, not a drafting role. You will be accountable for policy quality from problem identification through enforcement quality, with visibility into implementation, QA, and the feedback loops that determine whether policy intent survives contact with enforcement. Please note: This role involves regular exposure to potentially disturbing content, including child sexual abuse material, exploitation imagery, and grooming-related content. Wellness support is provided. What you'll be doing * Research and develop safety policies governing youth safety harms on Discord, including CSAM, grooming and solicitation, child exploitation, and age assurance, covering both reactive harm response and proactive age-appropriate design. * Own the full policy lifecycle for your domain: problem scoping, data justification, structured XFN consultation, testing against enforcement criteria, and post-launch feedback loop management. * Partner with Legal early in the development process. Embed compliance requirements for KOSA, COPPA, DSA Article 28, and the Online Safety Act into policy design before drafting begins. * Co-develop enforcement infrastructure with Trust and Safety, Engineering, and ML teams, including golden datasets, classification hierarchies, ML signal specifications, and IKB anchor criteria. * Own the feedback loop from implementation and QA back to your policy work. When QA findings or overturn data indicate a policy gap, you drive the revision. * Collaborate with civil society, NCMEC, ICAC, and other external child safety organizations. Represent Discord externally in this domain with credibility and consistency. * Deliver rapid policy responses to emerging child safety threats, including cross-functional coordination during incidents and regulatory notifications where applicable. * Own at least one functional domain area for the Safety Policy team beyond your harm portfolio. Current team needs include policy implementation systems, AI/LLM governance, or safety-by-design frameworks. * Expected travel: 15% What you should have * 5+ years of experience developing policy (not solely enforcing or operationalizing it) in trust and safety, child safety, or a related domain at a technology platform or civil society organization focused on child protection. * Deep expertise in youth safety: CSAM, NCMEC/ICAC frameworks, CSAM hash-matching systems, grooming and solicitation patterns, age assurance methodologies, and the regulatory landscape governing minors online. * Direct experience with KOSA, COPPA, DSA child safety provisions, and/or the Online Safety Act. Regulatory literacy is required, not a bonus. * Proven ability to write policy that survives implementation: clear enforcement criteria, defined classification hierarchies, and usable edge case guidance. * Experience working with ML and automation teams to translate policy criteria into detection signals. You do not need to write the model, but you need to know what the model needs from you. * Comfort making decisions under ambiguity and pressure. * Strong written and verbal communication for audiences ranging from frontline moderators to regulators to executive leadership. * Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. Bonus points * Advanced degree in law, public policy, child development, psychology, or a related field. * Experience with Discord's platform or gaming and creator communities. * Multilingual capabilities, particularly in languages relevant to Discord's global user base Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties).
