Staff Engineer - Financial Products In this role, you will be a technical leader and trusted advisor, shaping the architecture, design, and execution of critical systems that power Adyen’s global financial products. You’ll work closely with engineering teams, product partners, and cross-functional stakeholders to solve complex technical challenges, drive technical excellence, and ensure our solutions scale with the needs of our global business. Your expertise will guide the direction of our technology stack, influence best practices, and help set the technical vision for the organization. What you'll do * Scale and expand our foundation that supports the needs of all Adyen products; * Provide architectural and design leadership to build a strong foundation for our Financial Products offering; * Design and build new rails as Adyen expands their financial products; * Mentor engineers to uphold high standards of and technical excellence; * Drive a culture of continuous innovation by challenging the status quo and introducing transformative ideas. WHO YOU ARE * Must have: * 2+ years of experience in the financial industry, preferably in the banking or fintech sector; * 10+ years of hands-on development experience in a modern engineering environment; * Technical leadership experience, including mentoring engineers and leading an engineering strategy; * Hands-on experience designing and building large scale distributed systems; * Strong background and hands-on experience coding with Java; * Platform mindset. Able to generalize complex processes and create simple and flexible services to support multiple products; * Proactive relationship-builder with strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with diverse stakeholders across cultures; * Self-starter who can identify problems and figure out solutions     This role's annual base salary range is $258–$367k, plus RSUs. The Opportunity Adyen is building a top-tier AI engineering team in San Francisco to drive our next chapter of innovation using AI globally across the entire company. This is a highly technical, hands-on role focused on the exploration and application of cutting-edge AI research within the financial technology sector. As a Member of Technical Staff, you will operate with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, delivering strategic, high-impact outcomes that bridge the gap between advanced AI research and production-grade applications at a global scale, potentially impacting trillions of dollars in transactions annually.   What You'll Do: * Innovate and Deploy: Drive the execution of Adyen's AI strategy, focusing on the practical application of Generative AI (GenAI) and other AI methodologies in finance. This includes contributing to Adyen's efforts in key research areas such as AI agents for data analysis and operational workflows, human-in-the-loop for integrity risk, and development of foundation models. For instance, you might contribute to initiatives like the Data Agent Benchmark for Multi-step Reasoning (DABStep), which evaluates AI agents on real-world data analysis tasks, including those from the financial sector. * Build Production-grade Applications: Bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI research and production by implementing research papers into robust, scalable, and production-ready code. Reduce complexity and dependencies across teams by championing engineering, scientific alignment and setting high quality standards. * Optimize and Scale: Contribute to defining the long-term vision for AI at Adyen, specifically how AI will interact with humans and finance, including consumers, merchants, and financial institutions. This also includes understanding regulation and advocating for safe innovation in the field. * Think Outside the Box: Drive innovation by challenging the status quo, introducing transformative ideas and implementing creative solutions to solve real-world problems. You are an Applied AI Specialist who views onboarding as an Intelligent Extraction and Reasoning problem, using LLMs to interpret merchant documents and automate complex KYC/Risk mapping. You will design the architecture that turns complex regulatory and business requirements into a zero-friction activation experience for merchants.   What you'll do * Drive Activation Velocity: Lead the architecture for our global onboarding systems. You will build the logic that orchestrates the merchant lifecycle minimizing time-to-value without compromising stability. * Bridge Policy & Code: Act as the technical architect where business logic meets regulatory requirements. You will architect an onboarding concierge that uses real-time reasoning to ask only the necessary questions, proactively resolving compliance blockers through natural dialogue. * Product Strategy: Proactively shape the strategic roadmap in partnership with the Director of Engineering, other Staff Engineers, and Product teams. You will move beyond simply shipping features to deliver innovative solutions that drive merchant success and accelerated activation by proactively addressing and resolving systemic bottlenecks. * Global Standardization: Mentor engineers to drive technical standards that ensure the user journey is compliant and performant across all regions, balancing local regulatory needs with a global core architecture.   WHO YOU ARE * * * * Systems Architect: You think in terms of merchant journeys and system bottlenecks. You have a track record of building resilient, distributed systems. * Compliance-Minded: You have a deep understanding of security-by-design, specifically as it relates to KYC, identity verification, and regulated data handling. * Full-Stack Powerhouse: Deeply proficient in Java and experienced in building high-concurrency API architectures. * Applied AI Experience: You have experience (or a deep technical interest) in building production-grade interfaces powered by LLMs, including harnesses, policy enforcement, evals, RAG architectures and secure data handling. * Entrepreneurial & Autonomous: You can navigate a large, global organization to align diverse teams (Risk, Operations, Product) on a unified technical vision for onboarding.
