This is a senior, operationally hands-on role that combines day-to-day MLRO responsibilities with strategic compliance direction - protecting the business through robust controls, proactive risk management, and continuous regulatory horizon scanning. The postholder will act as a business-enabling partner, working closely with the COO and CEO to translate regulatory requirements into practical action plans, ensuring commercial growth is pursued confidently within a defined risk appetite. We are ideally looking for candidates with experience in the company formations (Trust or Company Service Provider (TCSP)), or accounting sector. Key Responsibilities • Serve as the registered MLRO, with full responsibility for suspicious activity reporting reviews, external SAR submissions, and direct engagement with the NCA and FCA • Own and evolve the group risk framework, including our AML policies and procedures, risk registers and risk appetite statements • Lead AML and financial crime compliance across the group, ensuring ongoing adherence to the Proceeds of Crime Act, Money Laundering Regulations, and UK GDPR • Oversee KYC and CDD controls, sanctions screening, and SAR reporting - continuously optimising processes to handle high volumes of customer onboarding and transactional activity • Drive regulatory horizon scanning, proactively tracking changes to the regulatory landscape and briefing senior leadership with clear, actionable plans • Maintain and improve control effectiveness, overseeing first-line self-assessment and second-line assurance activity, ensuring audit findings are actioned within agreed SLAs • Partner with business leaders and commercial teams to enable growth by embedding compliance into operational and product development processes • Manage relationships with external regulators, auditors, and relevant third parties with professionalism and confidence • Oversee compliance tools and technologies, including AML monitoring systems and case management platforms • Monitor and report on risk posture and compliance KPIs, providing regular updates to the COO, CEO, and senior leadership What We Are Looking For * 10+ years of compliance and risk leadership in a regulated sector, ideally with direct experience in company formations (TCSP) or accountancy services * Proven experience as an MLRO or Deputy MLRO, with direct responsibility for SAR submissions and engagement with the NCA and FCA * Deep expertise in AML and financial crime, with strong working knowledge of the Proceeds of Crime Act, Money Laundering Regulations, GDPR, and FCA guidance * Experience building and managing risk frameworks using the three-lines-of-defence model at scale * A track record of regulatory horizon scanning and delivering compliance change programmes on time * Familiarity with AML monitoring systems and case management platforms * A pragmatic, business-enabling mindset - able to advise on risk-based decisions that support growth rather than obstruct it * Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate complex regulatory matters clearly to senior leadership and external partners * Analytical, data-driven approach to assessing risk posture and prioritising remediation * Relevant professional qualification (ICA, CAMS, CISI, or equivalent) strongly advantageous; Bachelor's degree required What We Offer * £80- 120k and comprehensive benefits package * Hybrid working model- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the Office. * Real opportunities for progression as the business scales * The chance to influence both customer experience and product development * A culture that values ownership, impact, and continuous learning Equal Opportunities 1st Formations is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. THE ROLE As the Second Line of Defence (2LoD) subject matter expert, the Financial Crime Risk Manager will report directly to the Group MLRO and will play both a regional and global role. In this role, you will be primarily tasked with building and maintaining effective AML/CTF, ABC, and sanctions systems and controls to ensure compliance with laws and regulations in various GoCardless locations. This is a 12 month fixed term contract. WHAT EXCITES YOU * Conducting end-to-end investigations into suspicious activity, gathering and analysing transactional and customer evidence to assess internal disclosures, and preparing and submitting Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to the National Crime Agency (NCA) and other FIUs where reportable grounds for suspicion are identified * Day-to-day oversight of the compliance team's JIRA request queue — Unusual Activity Reports (UARs), policy advisory, partner bank queries, FCDDQs, and ad hoc queries — triaging, prioritising, and allocating incoming work across the team, driving each item through to resolution, while executing tasks directly where technical fit and capacity allow; * Executing the firm’s annual financial crime Enterprise-wide Risk Assessments (EWRA), including risk identification, data analysis, inherent risk assessment and control evaluation. Keeping EWRA methodology up-to-date; * Closely follow legal, compliance, and regulatory developments in relation to AML/CTF, ABC, and sanctions in the Fintech industry, to ensure our processes keep pace; * Drafting annual external reports and regulatory returns to the authorities, and acting as a point of contact for the FCA, NCA, and other law enforcement agencies, including in ongoing criminal investigations that commenced from a submitted SAR; * New products, markets business partnerships/initiatives risk assessments and programme updates; * Drafting financial crime management information and periodic reports to senior management, analysing trends and recommending enhancements to first line controls; * Delivering targeted financial crime training to the Compliance Operations team and Sales team on areas that are identified as requiring improvement; * Advising on CDD escalations based on internal policies and procedures; * Monitoring and responding to AML / Sanctions-related escalations in JIRA; * Reviewing and approving of high-risk customers at onboarding (e.g. PEPs); * Reviewing and approving of requests for waivers, dispensations and minor policy exceptions from the first line defence; * Promoting a culture of good financial crime management across the firm; * Covering MLRO annual leave / absences * Supporting on the Financial Crime Risk roadmap projects to design and deploy controls over new products, new markets, and enhancements throughout the company; * Support the wider Compliance based on capacity, need and expertise. WHAT EXCITES US * You have 5+ years’ experience in financial crime within the 2 LoD of an FCA regulated financial services firm or within consultancy; * You have strong working knowledge of regulatory frameworks, guidelines, and requirements across the UK, US, EU, New Zealand, Australia, and/or Canada, as well as bodies like the FATF, Wolfsberg Group, etc.; * You have experience in designing internal controls from scratch and driving their implementation, including automation where feasible; * You have worked within a fast growing, scale-up business; * You have experience conducting AML/CTF and sanctions compliance monitoring reviews, including model calibration and validation; * You have exceptional analytical, writing and presentation skills; * You have a 'sleeves-rolled-up' approach to your work. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Own and manage the daily transaction reporting cycle: exception management, accuracy checks, reconciliation breaks, and validation exception triage. * Own MI recording, incident logging, data pulls, and incident form completion. Keep the domain lead informed on all incidents and escalations. * Investigate and remediate breaks identified by monitoring controls and data quality assurance tools. * Track every incident and validation failure from inception to closure - ensuring risk forms are submitted, the incident register is maintained, and a running log of items for committee reporting packs is kept. * Collaboratively produce committee reporting packs and monthly SLAs, for sign-off by the domain lead. * Prepare agendas, pre-reads, and minutes for governance meetings. Track action items to completion. * Read and acknowledge FCA publications on the regulatory register, building a working understanding of upcoming changes. Awareness of ESMA and ASIC publications is a plus. * Test and verify regulatory changes implemented by the domain lead, ensuring reporting outputs are correct against the relevant technical standards. * Maintain transaction reporting procedures, traceability sheets, and audit-related documents. * Conduct ongoing quality review of existing procedures - identifying gaps where operational practice has diverged from documented process. * Identify operational process improvements and lead their delivery. WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE Essential: * 1–2 years of experience in transaction reporting, with primary focus on MiFIR/MiFID II * Practical experience with daily exception management, reconciliation processes, and validation monitoring. * Ability to investigate root causes of reporting breaks - understanding why an exception occurred, not just flagging it. * Familiarity with the transaction reporting lifecycle. * Strong attention to detail. Transaction reporting is a precision function - errors have direct regulatory consequences. * Clear written communication for drafting incident narratives, meeting minutes, and committee pack content for senior stakeholders and board-level committees. * Comfortable working with data, spreadsheets, and reporting tools. Desirable: * Exposure to EMIR reporting (EMIR REFIT experience is a strong plus). * Awareness of ASIC derivative or transaction reporting requirements. * Experience with project management and documentation tools. * Experience preparing governance packs or SLA reports in a regulated environment. * Familiarity with Approved Reporting Mechanisms (ARMs) and NCA validation rules. * Any scripting or automation skills (Python, SQL) for data investigation.
