Please apply as soon as possible ABOUT YOUR ROLE The Fairphone Software Engineering team is seeking a Software Engineer to lead the integration of software features for our partners. In this role, you will be responsible for integrating specialized third-party solutions—such as advanced accessibility tools or robust digital safety features—directly into our Android ecosystem. In this role, you won't just maintain a device; you will be the technical bridge between Fairphone and our ODMs (original design manufacturers), ensuring that partner-specific software components are seamlessly architected, integrated, and maintained within our Android ecosystem. You will champion sustainable and long lasting software development while ensuring our partners' unique requirements are met with high-quality, scalable solutions. While this is a deeply technical engineering role, project management experience is essential. You will be expected to manage complex integration timelines, navigate vendor relationships, and coordinate cross-functional delivery, ensuring that technical milestones align with broader business objectives. You will report to our Head of Software Engineering, who reports to our CTO. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & OBJECTIVES Your Key Responsibilities   * Design and implement software bridges and integration layers for partner-specific components within the Android stack. * Provide direct technical guidance and oversight to the partners to integrate their solution both within our open-source tree and our production codebase.  * Ensure the partner components are well integrated throughout the software development lifecycle, from bring-up to maintenance. * Collaborate with internal quality and testing teams to validate ODM deliverables, ensuring all partner integrated features meet Fairphone’s high performance and reliability standards. * Triage and resolve complex integration issues across hardware and software boundaries * Own the technical documentation for partner integration projects, ensuring clear communication with both internal stakeholders and external partners. * Manage project timelines and coordinate cross-functional delivery, ensuring that technical milestones for partner integrations align with business objectives and vendor delivery schedules. Key Objectives * Architect and deliver robust software integration solutions tailored for partner requirements. * Serve as the primary technical point of contact for ODMs and partners to ensure alignment on software stack integration, quality standards, and delivery timelines. * Bridge the gap between internal Fairphone & partner requirements and external ODM implementation capabilities, ensuring code integrity and long-term maintainability. This includes leveraging and contributing to our open-source (OSS) AOSP codebase, particularly for Proof of Concepts (PoCs). YOUR SKILLS & EXPERIENCE * You have a degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a similar field, or have equivalent experience in one or more of these fields. * You have 5+ years of relevant, hands-on experience in the Android ecosystem.  * You are an expert developer proficient in the core Android and chipset stacks, including C/C++ or Rust, Java and Kotlin. You don't just write code; you architect, test, and implement robust functional requirements. * You have the ability to lead technical discussions and negotiate technical solutions with external partners. * Knowledge of AI/ML integration in Android (e.g., on-device AI, NPU utilization, or relevant frameworks) * You can support building business cases * You are used to working with Legal teams, ensuring Software compliance * You are software quality-driven, used to unit and integration testing, code review tools, and continuous integration. * You are well-versed in open-source development methodologies and thrive in a collaborative environment. * You excel at resolving complex issues, performing root-cause analysis across hardware/software boundaries, and documenting your findings clearly. * Proven experience working directly with Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) in a technical capacity. * Deep understanding of partner software integration workflows and the unique challenges of customizing Android for specific partner use cases. * You have a solid understanding of Enterprise Firmware Over-the-Air (EFOTA) solutions and the specific challenges of managing update rollouts for large B2B/Enterprise device fleets. * You are familiar with Android Enterprise system update policies (e.g., maintenance windows, mandatory updates). * Specific expertise in any of the various HALs within Android is a bonus, such as camera, audio, WiFi or Bluetooth. * You are proficient with GNU/Linux operating systems. * You are proficient in spoken and written English. In this role, you won't just maintain a device; you will architect a more sustainable future for mobile technology by extending the lifecycle of our hardware up to 8 years. You will be a technical anchor for our Android and vendor stack, working all across the different layers of the Android OS. Your mission is to master the complexities of the AOSP as well as Qualcomm open source and proprietary stack through nearly a decade of Android upgrades. We are looking for an engineer who excels at deep-dive analysis and innovative problem-solving, someone capable of maintaining security and performance long after traditional vendor support ends. You will report directly to our OS Longevity team Tech Lead, under our Head of Software Engineering, who reports to our CTO. You will be working next to and senior engineers who focus on Android AOSP and Linux kernel. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & OBJECTIVES KEY OBJECTIVES * Architect a sustainable future for mobile technology by extending hardware lifecycle to 8 years. * Master the complexities of AOSP  stacks through nearly a decade of upgrades. * Maintain security and performance long after traditional vendor support ends. * Android operating system upgrades: Contribute to the software engineering activities needed for upgrading the devices to a newer Android version. * MR and SMR releases: Contribute to ongoing long-term maintenance work, including the continuous development of the Android platform across our entire device portfolio. You will ensure consistent system stability through successive Android versions, performing root-cause analysis for issues and providing proactive maintenance to uphold high quality standards between major releases. * Cross-device codebase: Contribute to consolidating the different Android codebases across our devices, streamlining development efforts and reducing operational overhead. You will drive our B2B product service offering, by meeting with prospective customers and supporting our sales team in identifying their needs, defining a development roadmap and shepherding the feature development through our product introduction process.  In this role, you will have to deeply investigate, capture and prioritize requirements and features that support the development and release of alternative open-source operating systems in Fairphone products, at a quality level that matches other established certified software branches or flavours. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & OBJECTIVES Key Responsibilities * Establish and maintain your product roadmap, aligning stakeholders and keeping the rest of the organization updated.  * Shepherding product development through the new product introduction process, owning the closure of each gate across the team.  * Maintain and prioritize the feature backlog for both software Business solutions and alternative OS, balancing changing technical requirements, partner feedback, Mobile Device Management (MDM) enterprise workflows needs, and resource constraints.  * Act as a bridge between alternative OS software partners and internal Fairphone teams that require working with their software (generally supply chain & after-sales) to ensure builds are delivered in time, or remain available for any commercial/marketing queries regarding their software. * Support business development activities like drafting technical annexes for B2B contracts, meeting software teams, or supporting client/partner meetings with your technical, establish clear and transparent communication channels.  * Continuously contribute to improving ways of working between internal stakeholders to assure a high quality standard and support of our B2B accounts and the alternative open-source OS’s.  Key Objectives * Establish and lead the strategic vision and long-term roadmap for software Business Solutions and alternative OS partnerships, ensuring they align with business growth, trends in the market and technical feasibility.   * Act as the central liaison between external development teams and Fairphone teams to ensure software solutions are successfully delivered, supported and meet our quality standards and envisioned value proposition.  * Manage the backlogs of (new) features and issues, considering changing technical requirements, partner feedback and resources constraints.  YOUR SKILLS & EXPERIENCE * 3+ years of experience in product management, product ownership, or technical business analysis, specifically within services to business customers, mobile software ecosystems and/or with experience in working with alternative open-source software.  * Strong technical understanding of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and the underlying mechanics of custom ROMs and alternative OS’s. * Technical depth to be able to discuss bug fixes is as important as enough commercial acumen and the ability to discuss business cases, costs, and contractual obligations. * Familiarity with Mobile Device Management (MDM) architectures and enterprise enrollment workflows and Android Enterprise recommended (AER). * Excellent stakeholder management skills: proven ability to manage expectations and steer conversations with founders/developers of alternative OS solutions and engineering/ IT/operations leads within the organizations of our business customers. * Product Management or Agile Product Owner Certifications (e.g., CSPO, PSPO). * You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; speaking French, German is a big plus!  * Prior experience in the circular electronics sector or a deep alignment with sustainable hardware/software lifecycles.  * Availability to travel on a regular basis internationally.
