Senior AI Engineer We are looking for a Senior AI Engineer to join our AML (Anti-Money Laundering) Tech team in Amsterdam. You will help build our next-generation financial crime investigation system, leveraging AI to manage and mitigate risk at scale. With our global footprint, you will have access to a uniquely rich dataset to fuel these solutions. You will bridge the gap between applied research and engineering excellence, taking ownership of the end-to-end lifecycle of these AI systems – from initial ideation to production. We are building a Human-in-the-Loop system. By evolving our capabilities from isolated workflows to a highly performant, trustworthy agentic system, you will shape how humans and AI collaborate in a complex, regulated domain. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the foundational group driving AI product development at Adyen. You will be building zero-to-one products, setting the architectural standards for our team, and defining how AI is practically deployed across the company. In this role, you will: * Build Agentic Systems: You will lead the design and deployment of robust, multi-step AI agents tailored for complex investigation workflows (orchestration, tool dispatching, state and memory management, error recovery, human-in-the-loop design). * Develop Platform Infrastructure: You will build a scalable modular agent platform that seamlessly integrates with enterprise data to support Adyen’s massive operational scale and diverse use cases. * Architect Evaluation Frameworks: You will design custom, domain-specific benchmarks and reusable infrastructure to rigorously test LLM reliability, edge cases, failure modes, and overall production readiness. * Provide Strategic Leadership: You will act as the leading engineer for the team, driving the AI product roadmap in close collaboration with a high-performing product team and leadership, guide company-wide MLOps decisions, evaluate third-party tools, and lead cross-functional integration. Who You Are: * Experienced Builder: 5+ years in Software or Machine Learning Engineering, including 2+ years successfully designing and productionizing AI systems. * Agentic Architecture Expert: Proven experience in applied AI, with a focus on building systems around pre-trained models (e.g., context engineering, fine-tuning, RAG, inference optimization, orchestrating model interactions with external tools to deliver solutions, multi-step tasks). You know exactly what separates a research prototype from a production agent. * Engineering & MLOps Pragmatist: Highly proficient in Python with a strong grasp of engineering best practices and tracking "LLM-native" metrics (e.g., granular tracing, tokens/sec, cost-per-request). * Proactive Leader: A self-starter who thrives in ambiguity, continuously raises the technical bar, influences system architecture, and mentors the team to build for scale. * Educated: Master’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent technical background. * Bonus (Nice to Have): A strong foundation in traditional Machine Learning. You understand that this product sits within a broader ML ecosystem and pragmatically choose the right tool for the problem. Data Extraction and Accessibility  The Data Extraction and Accessibility team is responsible for building and maintaining the centralized reporting framework used across Adyen. This includes securing and managing data access from both operational systems and the big data platform, transforming data into the required formats, and ensuring its secure delivery to our merchants. What you’ll do: * Work on complex technical projects from requirements analysis through design, implementation, testing and launch into production. * Be hands-on and contribute to the implementation. * Identify and improve parts of the platform to make it more robust and scalable. * Bring your own point of view on best engineering practices.  * Your code will be used at scale and you are expected to think in that mindset when building features. * We launch fast and iterate often. Concretely, this means that within your first few weeks, you will bring live functionalities that impact many merchants and shoppers.  * Build APIs and tooling according to quality principles such as performance and code quality. * Collaborate across teams and time zones to get projects over the finish line. Who you are: * Familiar with complex large scale distributed systems. * You have experience with Java, Web Services, REST Apis, Webhooks and SQL/PostgreSql. * You have a good understanding of Software Engineering practices and interest in product knowledge. * You enjoy working in a cross-functional team with roles like Data Science, Frontend, and Product. * You value involving other people to hear different perspectives. * You have an experimental mindset with a launch fast and iterate mentality. Sitting at the intersection of Data Engineering, Backend Engineering, and Systems Engineering, Data Platform Engineers at Adyen build the foundational layer of tooling and processes for our on-premise Big Data Platforms. These tools support 10s of products, 100s of developers, and 1000s of daily jobs that add to Adyen’s strong portfolio of capabilities. You’ll collaborate with data engineers and ML scientists and engineers to build and roll-out these tools. Along with DataOps Engineers, you’ll develop and operate multiple big data platforms, of which the biggest is 500+ nodes, with 25k+ CPU cores, 240+ TBs of RAM, and 23+ PBs of storage capacity, running tens of thousands of spark jobs a day. YOUR FOCUS AREAS We are currently expanding our platform capabilities. Depending on your expertise, your immediate focus will be driving one of these two key ecosystems: * The OLAP Ecosystem: Scaling and optimizing our real-time analytical powerhouses (Druid, FastAPI, Java, Kafka). * The Data Engineering Ecosystem: Designing and building data contracts, validation frameworks, optimization tooling, and robust Kafka ingestion pipelines. WHAT YOU’LL DO You will balance building innovative new tools from scratch with relentlessly improving our existing infrastructure. This role is a perfect fit if you are passionate about: * Scale: Developing and maintaining high-performance, distributed big data platforms. * Distributed Systems: Working deeply with various flavors of databases, filesystems, and compute engines. * Data Quality & Discoverability: Building tools that enhance metadata collection, data lineage, and platform-wide data quality. * CI/CD & Infrastructure: Optimizing continuous release/deployment environments within a large-scale private cloud system. * Streaming: Developing stream processing applications and frameworks to reduce time-to-insight for analysts and data scientists. WHO YOU ARE * Python or Java Expert: 6+ years of experience with object-oriented programming. * Collaborative Enabler: A strong communicator who thrives on building bridges between the teams you enable (analysts, data scientists) and the teams you depend on (infrastructure, security). * Distributed Systems Architect: Proven experience developing and maintaining: * Distributed compute/data systems (e.g., Spark, Trino, Druid, ClickHouse). * Real-time and batch pipelines (Kafka, Spark Streaming) with a focus on user-friendliness and reliability.
