As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Data Platform team within Platform, you'll define and lead the technical strategy for Coinbase's data infrastructure, spanning ingestion, transformation, warehousing, streaming, and serving systems. This is a foundational role at the intersection of distributed systems, data engineering, and AI-readiness, reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering. You'll set architectural direction, drive multi-quarter roadmaps, and transition the organization from managed-service dependency toward engineering-built, platform-grade infrastructure that powers everything from fraud detection to modern multi-agent AI architectures. What you'll do: * Own the technical strategy and architecture for Data Platform, setting direction across data ingestion, transformation, warehousing, streaming, and serving systems while driving engineering-led cost reduction at the infrastructure layer. * Architect data infrastructure to natively support AI and ML workloads, ensuring pipelines, data lake systems, and compute can power ML training, feature stores, real-time inference, and multi-agent AI architectures at scale. * Drive the evolution to near-real-time data availability, enabling downstream teams across Coinbase to act on fresher data for fraud detection, financial reporting, and analytics. * Build alignment and secure commitment from senior leadership and cross-functional partners across product, infrastructure, analytics, ML, privacy, security, and compliance on technical priorities and tradeoffs. * Serve as the primary technical voice for Data Platform in org-wide forums including OKR planning, architecture reviews, and long-term infrastructure strategy, while elevating senior engineering talent. Required Skills and Experience: * 12+ years building and operating large-scale distributed data infrastructure, including streaming platforms, data lakes, batch and real-time processing engines, and query/serving layers. * Record of owning end-to-end technical strategy and architecture for an entire data domain across multiple teams, with demonstrated success transitioning organizations from managed-service dependency toward platform-grade, engineering-built infrastructure. * Deep systems thinking across the full data lifecycle, with ability to reason about performance, reliability, cost, security, and privacy at each layer. * Demonstrated experience designing data systems that support ML training pipelines, feature stores, real-time inference, or AI agent workloads at scale, with familiarity across technologies such as CDC, Kafka, Databricks, Snowflake. * Platform mindset and product-manager orientation toward data infrastructure, focused on reducing friction for developer customers and creating compounding leverage. * Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality. The Difference You Will Make: Estimating the causal impact of product changes is a core function of data science at Airbnb. This is typically done through short term experiments or quasi-experiments. However, ultimately we are interested not in maximizing the short term impact of what we do, but rather optimizing for the long term. Doing this well requires accurately estimating the long term impact of platform changes through frameworks that connect short-term outcomes to long-term impact.  In this role, you will develop and improve our frameworks for long-term impact estimation and own the most important estimation problems you identify. We are looking for someone that can develop the science and ensure it is fitted to Airbnb's problem space and stakeholder needs. Success is better long-term impact estimation in practice, not just in theory. A Typical Day:  * Develop causal estimates for long-term impact of short-term metric movements. * Build frameworks for estimating how the impact of product changes evolves over time.  * Create frameworks and tooling to evaluate the heterogeneous impact of product changes * Develop and apply causal inference methods, including experimental, econometric regressions, and quasi-experimental methods to measure a wide-range of platform/product impacts. Your Expertise: * Advanced degree in a quantitative field, e.g. Operations Research, Economics, Mathematics, Physics * Proven ability to design analytical solutions to complex problems with real world applications * Familiarity with recent developments in causal inference * 6+ years (with Ph.D) or 8+ yrs (with Masters) of experience of working or doing research in one or more experimentation / causal inference domains * Strong programming (R, Python / Scala / Java / C++ or equivalent) skills * Versatility to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences. * Publications or presentations in recognized Data Science journals/conferences is a plus. Your Expertise: * 10+ years of industry experience. * Extensive experience working with TypeScript to develop web applications, including designing and integrating with GraphQL and REST APIs. * Experience on a Platform, Infrastructure, or Developer Productivity team at a medium to large engineering organization. * Strong engineering fundamentals, including a solid understanding of client networking, performance optimization, caching strategies, client storage solutions, and asynchronous programming. * Experience mentoring and growing engineers across an organization and driving best practices for web client development. * Demonstrated ability to influence engineering strategy and shape technical priorities across a large organization. * Interest in developing internal tooling and CLI (command line interface) applications.
