Do you care for our future? Do you think that sustainability must be a foundation of today’s digital society? Do you have an interest in printed electronics and sustainability? Do you enjoy working in a dynamic team? We are looking for a Master of Science student for a Master Thesis project in RISE. About GreenWave 2 GreenWave 2 is a collaborative innovation project aimed at developing a sustainable European value chain for graphite production based on forest-derived biomass. The project focuses on converting lignin, a by-product from the pulp and paper industry, into battery-grade graphite through an energy-efficient microwave graphitization process. By coating lignin onto silicon carbide (SiC) substrates and applying rapid microwave heating, the project seeks to significantly reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with conventional graphite production. As graphite is a critical raw material for lithium-ion batteries and is currently sourced largely from fossil-based or non-European supply chains, GreenWave 2 contributes to increased resource security, industrial resilience, and climate neutrality. The project also evaluates the performance of the produced graphite in battery applications while assessing techno-economic feasibility and environmental sustainability, supporting the development of a competitive and sustainable graphite industry within Europe. Background Welcome to RISE Emerging Technologies in Norrköping. In close collaboration with your home university, we can offer you diploma work in our exciting R&D environment. During the project work you will be a part of our team at RISE and will be supported by supervisors both from RISE and your home university throughout the project. Most of the practical laboratory work will be carried out in our facility Printed Electronics Arena in Norrköping. Project research topic Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is becoming an integral component of product development in the electronics industry. Consumers want to know the environmental impacts of the electronic products they purchase, ranging from their carbon footprint and energy efficiency to end-of-life considerations and recyclability. Sustainability of electronic products is also high on the agenda of policy makers who want to guarantee a safe, sustainable and secure future for their constituents. This thesis project will focus on developing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model for a novel microwave-based graphitization process that converts lignin, a renewable by-product from the forest industry, into battery-grade graphite. The work will include mapping material and energy flows, collecting process data from laboratory and pilot-scale experiments, and evaluating the environmental impacts of the technology. The developed model will be used to identify key environmental hotspots and compare the sustainability performance of bio-based graphite production with conventional fossil-based and mined graphite supply chains. Project activities This diploma work comprises of: * Understanding the basics of the role of graphite and hard carbon in batteries * Understanding synthetic graphite production (both generic and project specific) * Defining the scope of the LCA study * Making a list of the environmental inputs and outputs of processes with the help of a researcher from RISE and creating a comprehensive LCA model in the LCA software SimaPro * Performing LCA calculations * Interpretation of the LCA results * Presenting the environmental finding to internal and possibly external audiences and potential for optimisation Student profile You have an interest in environmental sustainability, material production processes, electronics and/or science. You should be MSc student in the fields of environment, physics, materials or chemistry science, or related subject. You need to be enthusiastic, curious, and keen to develop your skills, enjoy working in a dynamic international team and with good communication skills. Excellent language skills in spoken and written (scientific and technical) Swedish and English is a strong plus. Location and start date RISE Emerging Technologies located in Norrköping, Södragrytsgatan 4. Master thesis start in September 2026. Supervisory team at RISE Main supervisor: Jesper Edberg Co-supervisor: Tatjana Karpenja Interested? Send in your application (CV and motivation letter) no later than August 14th.

For the full version of the advertisement, see Optimized and sustainable rehabilitation planning of urban water pipe and street networks Are you ready to take the next step in your academic journey? As a doctoral student with us, you will work closely with leading researchers in a strong, international research environment, with access to advanced laboratory equipment and solid funding opportunities. You will be offered secure employment, high-quality supervision, and room to grow, both as a researcher and as a person. The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed PhD student with a focus on how urban water pipes and streets could be renovated and renewed together (or not), to achieve a sustainable management of the municipal infrastructure. Take the opportunity to join one of the leading urban water research groups in the world with an international, creative and dynamic environment and close cooperation with the industry and universities worldwide. The Urban Water Engineering research group has a strong position in research and education on urban water systems, stormwater, small-scale wastewater and sewage systems. The group consists of about 50 members including senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and more than 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. Subject description Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (urban drainage, drinking water supply and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public’s health and safety. Project description The project Streetwise aims to improve coordination between street works and water/wastewater pipe network renewal in Swedish municipalities. Today, these investments are often planned and financed separately or coordinated based on limited data leading to repeated excavation, higher lifecycle costs, and unnecessary disruption for citizens. Skellefteå municipality is the needs owner and participates through the departments of Water & Wastewater and the Streets, providing a real test bed. Recent research will be the starting point where an existing model will be developed further to optimise the strategic asset management and coordination based on economic, environmental and other societal criteria. You will belong to a research team with researchers from our university as well as external researchers from the research institute RISE which are experts in policy-lab methodology. The work within the project includes development of an existing Python model and collection of asset management data of municipal infrastructure. Together with other researchers in the team, you will design workshops to be carried out with municipal partners to understand the present routines of coordinating asset management of multiutility infrastructures and be able to develop tools to support their work. Duties As a PhD student, you will collect asset management data, develop a Python model and be involved in workshops. You will learn how to collect and analyse scientific data within your research area as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies, including both research and mandatory and elective course work. In addition, you will also carry out departmental duties, such as teaching and/or assisting in other research projects. You will have two supervisors who support you in your work, as well as cooperate with other researchers in the project team. The research work for this project will specifically include modelling, including life cycle assessment studies and life cycle costs, as well as being part of policy development for the water sector. Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver of AMR spread is the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids — mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but largely overlooked tool in controlling resistance gene transmission. This PhD project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025) and is based at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, SLU Uppsala. The overarching aim of ECOPHARM is to decipher the mechanisms driving PDP interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on antibiotic resistance gene transmission in aquatic environments. As a PhD student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of plasmid-dependent phages in aquatic ecosystems. The work will combine environmental sampling, cultivation-based approaches, metagenomics, genome analysis, and experimental infection assays. Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre Third-cycle subject area: Forest management Description of the doctoral project: Swedish society is debating the long-term capacity of even-aged conifer-dominated forestry to reliably produce biomass over the coming century, and simultaneously sustain the breadth of ecosystem services that society increasingly demands from forestlands. Alternative approaches to production forests, such as restoration of broadleaved forests are thus of growing interest. The increased use of such alternatives may enhance the overall resilience of Swedish forests to projected climate change, better balance the provision of forest ecosystem services, provide vital habitat for forest biodiversity, and thereby help ensure forest ecosystem services delivery over the coming century. The EU Nature restoration Regulation and Sweden's national environmental goals, provide official recognition of the urgent need to restore and improve the ecological condition of forest ecosystems across Europe. Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the regeneration and restoration of new mixed broadleaved dominated forests. About the position: We intend to contrast passive versus active pathways for restoring such diverse forests. To address such issues, we will use existing experiments, chronosequences, and survey-data for evaluating the effects from restoration on ecosystem services and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of international researchers. We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will address these challenges, but we welcome those who bring specific research interests which can shape the ultimate direction of the PhD. Requirements: To meet the general entry requirements you must have been awarded a second-cycle (Master's) qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Chapter 7, Section 39). You must also meet the equivalent English language requirements as those necessary for the Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6. Your profile: The applicant should by the date of admission to PhD studies have a Master's degree in forest science, biology, ecology or equivalent. You should have a strong interest in forest ecosystems and an interest in working with large data sets.
