Monitor crop quality and support healthy plant growth. Harvest flowers and prepare them for packing and distribution. Support daily production with bulb handling, flower handling, inventory tasks, and other production-related duties. Move flowers, pots, trays, and other materials within the greenhouse. Occasionally, work may take place in refrigerated storage areas, and warm clothing is provided when needed. The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government agency with a mandate to promote knowledge, research and interest in our world. WORK TASKS The Department of Bioinformatics and Genetics at the Swedish Museum of Natural History is offering a two-year Postdoc position focused on Floral Traits, Machine Learning and Macro-evolution. This project aims to investigate the evolution of flower size on oceanic islands by combining phylogenetic comparative methods with machine learning-based extraction of trait data from digitised botanical floras. The successful candidate will develop computational workflows to generate large-scale, standardised datasets of floral traits and use these to test hypotheses about the predictability and drivers of flower-size evolution in island systems. As a postdoc in this project, you will work with developing methods in ML, integrate macro-phylogenetic tools to understand floral trait evolution on islands. The preferred start date is 01-10-2026. QUALIFICATIONS Qualifications: • completed a PhD in plant systematics or a related field • Demonstrated expertise in phylogenetic comparative methods and macroevolutionary analyses. • Strong programming skills in R and experience analysing large, complex biological datasets. • Excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written. (The research environment is international, therefore English is required. In addition, experience in the following areas will be considered: • Experience with plant biodiversity data, digitised floras, and/or trait databases. • Interest in natural language processing, large language models, or machine learning applied to biological data. • At least one publication in an international, peer-reviewed journal • At the final application date, no more than three years shall have passed since the doctoral degree was awarded, or since a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree was obtained. Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) Climate change is impacting aquatic ecosystems worldwide, creating an urgent need for management strategies that strengthen ecological resilience and support sustainable use of aquatic resources. In this two-year postdoctoral project, you will use quantitative evidence-based syntheses to identify how aquatic management can enhance ecosystem resilience to the impacts of climate change. This position offers opportunities for career development at the interface between ecological research and practical management through scientific publishing, conference participation, and stakeholder engagement. About the position We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in evidence-based conservation and restoration ecology. The project combines fundamental ecological and evolutionary research with applied management science to address: Which management interventions most effectively increase resilience to climate change in aquatic ecosystems? How do dispersal, ecological interactions and evolutionary adaptation influence the success of climate adaptation measures? How can evidence synthesis be translated into practical decision support for environmental managers? You will apply systematic reviews, meta-analyses and other evidence synthesis methods to answer these questions. The work includes close collaboration with practitioners to ensure scientifically robust and practically relevant guidance for climate adaptation. The project is expected to result in scientific publications while directly informing evidence-based environmental policy and management. We offer a collaborative research environment with strong links between fundamental ecological research and environmental management. The successful candidate will have opportunities to publish in leading international journals, present their work at international conferences, collaborate with practitioners and policy makers to develop an independent research profile. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who has recently completed, or is close to completing, a PhD and has training in statistics, data processing, bioinformatics, or a related discipline, to contribute to research on disorders of the brain. You will work with some degree of independence as a postdoctoral researcher in a group studying Parkinson’s disease and other alpha-synuclein–related diseases (alpha-synucleinopathies) within the David Bäckström lab (umu.se), primarily multiple system atrophy (MSA) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Our aim is to understand what causes these diseases, how synapses in the brain are affected in them, how these disorders lead to dementia, and—if possible—how they can be treated or prevented. Project Description The research group currently consists of 3–5 members and collaborates closely with the Departments of Neurology, Pathology, and Radiology at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS), as well as Umeå University. The group includes a principal investigator, a PhD student, a research nurse, and several affiliated researchers and students. Our research spans the spectrum from epidemiological studies to analyses of cerebrospinal fluid, genetics, and protein biochemistry related to Parkinson’s disease and other alpha-synucleinopathies. A major focus is on genetic and lifestyle-related risk factors in individuals affected by these currently incurable disorders, to understand their causes and how they relate to synaptic dysfunction and impaired cell endocytosis. This research involves both clinical studies of patients and molecular biological analyses carried out locally in Umeå and through international collaborations, enabling robust findings across multiple datasets. Experience with modelling approaches, data analysis, or machine learning applied to materials or chemical systems is considered a strong merit. You are expected to have excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, and a clear motivation to pursue an academic career. The ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary and international research environment is essential. In the evaluation of candidates, particular emphasis will be placed on (1) scientific excellence in polymer and materials science, (2) experience or demonstrated potential in applying machine learning and data-driven approaches to materials or formulation design, and (3) the ability to contribute to and expand ongoing research activities within the group.
